Breakfast Topic: Our community is great, and how it saved my cat

Many of you recently heard about my cat Rocky, who was not doing so well because of a deep infection in both of his ears. Because of the generosity of our community, Rocky's bills were taken care of and we could get him the immediate help he needed. My little buddy is alive because of this community. It's such a trivial thing to worry about in the grand scheme of things, but it personally affected me in such a profound way.
Sure, we have our low moments. We have our high moments, too, and it's all worth it. From Blizzard's own charity drives to Child's Play and the community reaching out to help sick children, I'd say we've got a pretty good track record. What has the WoW community done that has affected you personally?

Hey, Teresa - to some people, myself included, our pets ARE our children.
Deal with it, shut the f*** up and get over yourself.

So happy Rocky is doing better. He looks like such a sweetie.

When twitter inevitably angers me at some of the things that goes on, this is one of the reasons I stay involved with the community!
Glad Rocky's ok and doing better!!

I'm very pleased both that your cat was healed and that you received so much kind support. It is heartening to hear. However, I would disagree that "it was such a trivial thing." Cats are never trivial! Looking at both species, I have liked 100% of cats more than 99.9% of humans. I'm not sure that says more about cats or humans...
Again, congratulations and well done all.

Amen! Pets are never trivial. When my eleven-year-old dog died just under a year ago, I was heartbroken. She was like a sister to me (I grew up with her, and my parents always called her our fuzzy little sister and we always interacted with her), and I imagine cats are exactly the same to the people who love them.
People who haven't had a cat or a dog for their entire lives often don't understand. "It's just a pet." Don't worry, Mat. We understand, we really do.
I miss you, Lucy-goose.

Oh, I didn't mean it like that! I feel bad that it came across that way. I meant that my problems, in the grand scheme of things people could be worrying about, are trivial and I am thankful that they spared a moment for me.

Aw, dat's sweet!

Also, let's not forget the guild on my home server (Kirin Tor-US) which got together and bought one of their guildies a laptop so he could play from hospital. The guild (World's End Regular's) is home to some of the best WoW has to offer, including a friend of mine. Even the alliance respect this guild on our server, as they are one of the greatest bunch of folks.

That is an amazing story.

I'm glad your kitty is better. ^^
I have no personal experience with things like this, but it always makes me happy to hear about them.
Elzeebeth Feb 17th 2012 10:26AM
Agree totally - Duveen - never found a cat I dislike, but found several humans :)
Glad to hear Rocky is doing well

I'm glad to hear that Rocky is doing better. He looks like a real sweetie. I have two cats of my own, and I know how stressful it is if they are ill!
evoxpisces Feb 17th 2012 10:35AM
As someone else mentioned, saving your cat is not trivial. A pet is part of your family. I always enjoy hearing stories about communities doing good things. I know gaming communities get a bad rap but the majority of the people are good people and it's just very nice hearing about things like this. Although I have no story of my own, I'm happy for you that the WoW community was able to help save your cat! :)

I was going to say the same, until I saw Mat's response to it. He stated that the way he intended that to read was in relation to his own personal problems in light of the grander scheme of things, not his pet's welfare.
I would still disagree, however, in that our lives, warts and all, are what comprise our very existence. They are, indeed, "the grander scheme" - just reduced to an individual level. :-)

Yay Rocky!
