My family has had a similar story recently. We found out in January that our 12-year-old dog has lymphoma. She's doing okay for now, but our time with her is numbered. My guild leader requested our address, and the next day we received a large (dog-themed) bouquet of flowers, some candy and treats, a large stuffed animal and a really nice card. My wife made the comment that it really put things into perspective for her as far as WoW being a community and not just "that game you're always playing".

I wonder what would happen if anyone mentioned their kid had a bad ear infection or hell, even cancer and couldnt pay for meds, or really just brought it up to see what would happen. Most likely nothing.Mention Fido has a tummy ache, queue 5000 get well comments and money thrown at you....Hey wow insider, I have a kitten named Mr. Ears. He looks like a teeny tiny tiger. I found him wading in a garbage can and just HAD to take him home. One day he hurt his paw prancing in a meadow chasing wee little duckies. Maybe he stepped on a bumble bee? Being a poor collage student, I cant afford to fix his widdle paw. Please send money or I might have to rename him Mr. Tripod!

As a matter of fact I do care more about animals than children. *shrug* I'm not going to lie, animals will always invoke a stronger urge to help them than any human child could.

@Teresa- and you wonder why people like animals more then humans? Not that Mat needs defending, but I am going to say it anyway: He opened himself up and shared a part of his personal life with us. How dare you take that opportunity to not only criticize him for it but to belittle the situation. I hope you feel damn good about yourself. I also hope you never need anything from anyone the rest of your life. Karma is a bitch.

I didnt read that post, only this one that said his cat had an ear infection (doesnt sound life threatening) and got a shitload of help in the form of money and get well comments. People are such bleeding hearts when it comes to animals these days, but give ten shits about the welfare of actual people. Spider helps to make my case. There were two posters here, one said he mentioned his dog got cancer, and bam next day a boatload of gifts for the DOG. One little DOG. A dog that will not understand the gifts nor the meaning behind them. Someone else mentioned they had some life threatening condition, and got calls from guildmates, which is lovely, but the dog was showered with way more concern. What bugs me to no end are the people that care more about animals than people. The heartfelt letters and gifts going to one stupid animal that wont acknowledge it, could go to a person that could really use it and will acknowledge. Visiting the old folks home comes to mind back in Christmas when I went with my HS choir there. This reminded me of how sad and lonely those old folks are, and chances are they have grandkids that shower more love and attention on their FRIGGEN PETS than their own human family. So I get really cynical when I see one stupid cat or dog get cookies, balloons, get well cards, gifts, and money to pay for bills from random strangers, when that could go to an actual person that could and would acknowledge the love from strangers. Your stupid pets get enough love and attention and dont care how much you spend on gifts for them. Quit personifying animals damn it.

@Teresa - Did it occur to you that those people are giving gifts and support for the pet OWNERS, who very much do understand and appreciate them?

Umm... the stuff was primarily for two parents and three kids, not the dog. Yeah, I don't think she cared a bit.

Hey, Teresa - to some people, myself included, our pets ARE our children. Deal with it, shut the f*** up and get over yourself.
