4 major updates for holy paladins in Mists of Pandaria

Blizzard recently promised to release a flurry of Mists of Pandaria information in March, but apparently it's opened the gates early. The Mists of Pandaria talent calculator and ability list received a massive update this week, giving us new info on the talents and spells that holy paladins can look forward to in Mists. In addition, the Blizzard community managers have been answering questions about the new data at a rapid-fire rate.
Holy paladins have a lot to look forward to in Mists. It's clear that the developers have been looking at our weaknesses as healers, as several of our long-standing issues have been addressed. While we've always had a wide variety of utility abilities, until recently, holy paladins really only had single-target heals at their disposal. With the introduction of the revamped Holy Radiance in late Cataclysm and now the new talent options we'll in Mists, our base healing toolbox is looking more and more complete.

The new Eternal Flame talent in our Mists of Pandaria holy tree introduces the first serious heal over time ability into our arsenal. We've had pseudo-HoTs before, such as the Glyph of the Long Word, but never a true HoT effect. With Eternal Flame's serious healing per second and long 30-second duration, it might be my new favorite holy power release. Holy paladins have always struggled with healing targets proactively, and Eternal Flame goes a long way toward accomplishing that goal. My only regret is that it's in the same tier as Sacred Shield, as the two would obviously give us an amazing proactive toolbox.
A 5-point holy power bank
Every paladin will pick up a new spell at level 85 called Boundless Conviction. Boundless Conviction will let us save up 2 extra holy power points, which we can use at any time. Our holy power releases, like Light of Dawn and the new Eternal Flame, will only consume 3 holy power points each, so we're not able to supercharge our spells. What we can do is line up powerful holy power combos, such as a 3-point Word of Glory into Holy Shock into 3-point Word of Glory, which results in a massive amount of healing in a short amount of time.
The ability to pool up extra holy power gives us more flexibility and allows us to continue to use Holy Shock on cooldown even if we want to save our holy power for an upcoming attack. More flexibility and more decision making is always a good thing for the health of a class, and I am glad to see that changes like this are making it into the game.
Intellect plate is here to stay
The new Holy Insight passive ability had some holy paladins thinking that intellect plate was on the way out. Holy Insight is slated to give us a 400% boost to our mana pool, which had some paladins assuming that meant we'd start using strength gear. The reasoning for HI is that intellect will no longer increase the size of our mana pool in Mists. In order to differentiate us from retribution and protection paladins, we're receiving HI. All of the other healing classes should be receiving a similar treatment. Kaivax, the community manager, also confirmed that intellect plate is still hanging around in Mists. As you probably know, I'm all about intellect plate being the gear of choice for holy paladins.
Level 90: Hammer time
Holy paladins are looking at three new ability choices for our level 90 talents. The signature of each of the three new moves is that they can affect both our allies and our enemies, by healing and dealing damage, respectively. While I'm always trying to craft the best holy DPS build possible, the healing aspects of these spells have me more excited.

Our second option, Light's Hammer, is a combination of Holy Word: Sanctuary and Consecration. We light up a 10-yard circle on the ground by hurling a hammer at it, healing friendly targets and nuking enemy targets inside the circle. I don't like location-based heals, as they're pointless on movement-based encounters and rarely worth using. The exact healing numbers on Light's Hammer's tooltip are bugged, so I'm not even sure how powerful the spell is.
The final level 90 talent has me intrigued. The DPS version of this spell is called Execution Sentence, which I will probably ignore in favor of the healing version, Stay of Execution. Stay of Execution causes a giant hammer to fall from the sky, healing our target over 10 seconds for increasing amounts and finally culminating in a big heal as the hammer smashes down. I like the idea of coordinating a Stay of Execution to coincide with a big hit onto a tank, as it provides us allows us to pull off cool timing tricks. I will definitely be picking up this talent as my preferred first choice. I mean, come on -- giant hammer falling from the sky? It's a no-brainer.

I really hope the Stay of Execution graphic resembles a holier version of the sword sacrifice ritual that Svala Sorrowgrave uses against players in Utgarde Pinnacle - can't wait to see it in action!

I'm assuming it'll be a copy of the Atramedes trash ability in BWD without the stun, and holy-colored instead of purpleish - a hammer falls out of the sky and pulses when it hits its target's head.

I personally will be choosing holy prism, while stay of execution will be amazing , I will like to think that holy radiance is getting needed in mists , simply because mindlessly spamming holy radiance is extremly boring.

I'm thinking that it's going to look more like that attack the ghost dwarves use, in Blackrock, the ones before the blind dragon....

Man, I really do love it when they adapt spells that we've been seeing NPCs use into something they can give players! The immediate first thing that came to mind when I heard about Execution Sentence/Stay of Execution was that ability from that (nasty) dwarf pack before Atramedes. Its great for the flavor of the class, and useful looking at the same time. Here's hoping we can see more neat inspired tricks for other classes in the future (That Pit Lord ability Fel Firestorm for warlocks, anyone? >v>)

These are some interesting changes. I think it is safe to say Blizzard will never leave any class alone between expansions, whether they are in a good state or not ;-). In a way it's another way to keep the game fresh.

I absolutely love these new paladin spells. They are cool as hell! I'm really hoping they're making Rogue combopoints like the paladin ones, stacking on yourself. It won't happen, but one can dream... :)
Anyway, should I start playing again in MoP I'm sure my preferred healer would be a Paladin healer for sure. Or at least a hard contender to my Discipline priest (Holy sh**, I love those!)

The problem with combo points stacking on you and not the enemy is it makes redirect useless, not to mention the new rogue talent that causes redirect to have no cooldown in MoP.
That said, i'd rather see redirect go bye-bye and have combo points stack on the rogue, not the enemy. ;)

You missed a "have" in the last sentence of the second paragraph.
That aside, I'm very interested in how this will all play out when Mists lands. I'm greatly considering changing my off spec from ret to holy.

Interesting changes overall; I'll have to see how they play out.
I will miss Blessed Life, especially when PvPing. :(

I'm not sold on Eternal flame, a 30 second hot might sound nice but it really doesn't amount to much unless you maintain the buff on EVERYONE, which sounds like annoying busywork. And, really, it forces you to drop EF at 3 holy power which isn't that conducive since we use holy power the second we get it.
Sacred shield, however... Oh, mon amie... The only spell I actually -liked- in wrath, reincarnated for this day and age, using holy power instead of mana! Where to begin...?
Okay, so, if you look at Beacon of light, you'll see it's missing a duration and has no mana cost, instead it has a 10 second cooldown. This clearly indicates that Beacon of Light upkeep is a non-issue going into Wrath; it'll last indefinitely and swapping it out with another target only costs a GCD. The cooldown is there to prevent you from flailing your beacon around like a madman.
With that in mind, in-battle buff upkeep is relegated entirely to Judgements of the Pure. I'm establishing that because we can now fill that void with Sacred Shield, which is a much more compelling and on-the-fly practice than beacon of light whose job is mostly heavy lifting behind the stage.
It's possible that it'll be a little clunky because, again, we generally drop holy power the second we get it, but I'm more than happy to give this "Holy inquisition" a try!

So, I cut my post in half because I didn't want to drop a massive block of text in a single post, particularly when I start raving endlessly like some lunatic... Which is now.
Our level 90 talents are exceptional--not in so much the "Cool" sense as GotAK, but in a more practical sense; I can see myself using all of these abilities.
Holy Prism. Honestly, I think it should by a holy power generator, possibly causing a cooldown with other means of generating holy power (And subsequently its CD reduced) It can basically be shuriken equivalent for prot and ret but for holy I want it to be the aoe choice in the HP-generating corner of our healing trifectum, (Holy radiance being it for our casted and LoD for our HP).
Also, I'm sure it'll be tweaked to calculate the melee range of an enemy target if you cast it on them. You might assume that'd be sub-optimal but the difference isn't actually that big, proportionately, so that's a great way to hit all the melee if nobody's huddled in a specific spot.
Light's Hammer, yeah I don't see it quite working in pve. If there's brief huddle phases and the spell heals for a lot then yeah, but if there's constant huddling then what exactly does this bring that Holy Prism can't offer more consistently?
As for Execution sentence, I'm not sure how a HoT on a minuet cooldown would work in practice, do I just cast it on the tank because he's usually the only target taking constant damage? In pvp this sounds like lifebloom, in the sense that it does a bunch of healing for us in the face of being chain-CC'd.
What's really cool about these spells is that they basically cover all the bases when it comes to paladin archetypes. Holy prism is your draenei, crystal-ish motif, Light's Hammer is for your Uthers and such, and Execution Sentence is your Judgement paladins, it's a nice touch.
