Breakfast Topic: Be honest -- did you make it over the Wailing Caverns jump?

You know the jump. Right next to the waterfall about two floors up on the "right" side of the instance. It's easier to get to now that Wailing Caverns has essentially been cut in twain. You can still go to the jump and miserably fail like Gorgomite did.
Gorgomite has long since quit WoW, but he was my first guild master and good friend. We played Dark Age of Camelot together, and with the built-in guild community we created in other games, moved over to WoW. That fateful night, Gorgomite could not make it over the Wailing Caverns jump. Try as he might, he just couldn't make it. Lag? Maybe. Crappy laptop wouldn't let him jump at the right time? Most likely. We all laughed for a good 30 to 45 minutes figuring out how to get him over that jump. It was the best.
How many of you fell because of the Wailing Caverns jump? Be honest. I can tell who is lying.

I can honestly say that *I* never failed on that particular jump (I did fall in Blackfathom Deeps though, more than once), but the point is, there's always *someone* in the group who does. And then they can't find the way back, and someone runs back to show them the way, and then they get lost too and you end up with the entire group spread out across the cave and never finding their way back together.
Happened not just once, but several times, on various characters xD

yep First time there, Leader said don't forget you have to jump over... as I was falling down to the floor below... and pulling those cool golden mobs... ahhhh Memories!

You can actually make the "jump" by just running off the ledge, no jumping required. I've never understood how it's really possible to "fall" there, as long as you're not on 'walk' mode, or jump before you start moving while on the edge. Alas, the ledge boss did claim me a few times in my early years, before I discovered this.

thats a lie

Not a lie. I came here to say the same thing. Unless I am thinking of another instance, you can be in the middle of the cliff, and run straight forward, and you fall on the edge of the other side.
styopa Feb 20th 2012 9:20AM
Actually, you can NOW.
I believe they n00bified it, because I'm pretty sure you couldn't just run over it before. Now, truly, it's just a matter of someone panicking and jumping that screws them.
To answer the OP: I never missed this jump, but just outside the instance there's a ramp down to the entrance that there's a hole in, and I admit to my shame that the first time I was in there, I fell into that hole like 3 times in a row...it was like a strange compulsion that I was unable to learn.

Yes, they removed the need to jump when they remade WC. God forbid a dungeon should have a challenge in it that doesn't involve people standing still and rolling their face across the keyboard to burn down boring bosses.
I wish Blizzard would still make dungeons for people who actually enjoy doing dungeons, instead of efficiently designed loot mazes for people who just want to level/gear up as fast as possible and who will drop group the instance something goes wrong or they have to think for a second.

I never really bothered with WC. I will have to check that out when I roll my monk ;)

Every.
Single.
Time.
Including on my level-capped death knight who went in to help out on the guild achievements.

Totally didn't make it. More than once. Died at least once to trash respawn, while my friends patiently tried to explain the trick to getting across.
meldergohjunling27011986 Feb 20th 2012 8:13AM
i think you can just walk over it and fell on the other side. Never had that problem but had a few that just couldn't make it on first try.
damn the old wailing cavern. the maze and whatnot.

While I never fell to that particular obstacle, there was one that often tripped me up, specifically, the pipe before Gluth in Naxxramas.
There was something about that pipe, I swear it was coated in grease, or my hunters pet was pushing me. Whatever it was, I always fell, and had to run past the Frogger Boss again, and while I made it MOST of the time, a 400 ping meant there was the odd embarrassing moment when I had to call for a rez XD
Pyromelter Feb 20th 2012 1:07PM
Erg. I fell off that pipe more than a few times myself. (For WC, I would usually miss that jump once, then get it the next time. 3d platforming for the loss)

At least once, possibly more times personally. Do want to add the disclaimer that this was back in Vanilla. Apparently when Cata hit, one of the patches dropped a nerf on this boss as I have not failed since.

First time there my boyfriend and I were duo-ing it at about level 60. It was late on a Friday night, we were tired and lost, and we could not do that damned jump. It was the last straw and we were bitching each other out over it. I think we gave up and went to bed at that point. I cheered when they shortened the dungeon, and I haven't seen anyone fail that jump since.
Frankly, there should not be platforming challenges in a non-platforming game. The controls in WoW are just not there to support it. Blackfathom Deeps is a prime example. Even the addition of the wind-assisted jumps in the Molten Front can't save platforming in the game, as I've seen several people (myself included) aim incorrectly on them and end up in lava...

My first time in wailing caverns back in vanilla, I learned that I fail at jumping.
Nina Katarina Feb 20th 2012 8:34AM
I fail not only on the Wailing Caverns jump but also on the Blackfathom Deeps jump. Yeah. The one that's only two feet across. My timing sucks.
4magik4 Feb 20th 2012 8:37AM
I fell there once. My first time there, on my first character.. it was embarasing. :P
rovingbandit21 Feb 20th 2012 8:35AM
WC was never a problem for me. Now my Brother-in-law, yup every time he tried the jump it was bombs away! For me I can't ever make the Blackfathom Deep jump sequence on the first or 12th try.
byronius_prime Feb 20th 2012 8:42AM
I've fallen many times there. Some times more than once in the same run. I don't think I've died there though due to falling since there's trash below, but usually people clear them in my experience. Also, not unexpectedly, whenever I've shown a friend this jump I pull it off - when I'm pugging though, I'd be lucky to cross it :P
