Breakfast Topic: I found a tol'vir rare... oh, no

This phenomenon known as the tol'vir rare find is an anomaly. Two quickly made their appearance for me, then vanished, forever leaving me to a storeroom full of Canopic Jars and Sketches of Desert Palaces. It's getting quite full in there. But not this faithful day. This day would be different.
Finally, the impossible happened -- another tol'vir rare. I'm freaking out, man. It's the monkey paw! And the worst part about this blessed miracle is that I can't go to sleep until I solve it.
Have you ever experienced the pain of the double-edged sword in World of Warcraft? Have you ever been the victim of something lucky that turned into an obsession?

The infamous Crawling Claw.....
I too have the mount and the recipe......and still no Claw. Being an obsessive pet hoarder I feel your pain. I desperately want it and have farmed whole weekends away praying to the RNG gods that they bless me just once. Alas my search goes on...
The Tiny Crimson Whelpling is another one that seems to elude me. I had one drop for me a long time ago and I chose to sell it (hey... 10k is 10k and at the time, 10k was the mother load). I have yet to see another... :(

I try to do at least an hour of Archaeology a night, usually right before raid in hopes of getting those juicy Tol'Vir rares.
Ugh, I just have the scarab jar so far.

Oh, I have felt the double-edged sword. It was called Tyrande's Favorite Doll.

I was thinking 'How sad for all of you! I don't have anything like...' and then I realized what I'm doing right this moment. Fishing. For that stupid turtle mount on my turtle collecting hunter. For the third year in a row without ever seeing it drop. I even did fishing dailies on her for the last month just to get that stupid book that teaches her how to track fish.
...And everyday I feel like that Bee in The Bee Movie. 'Maybe this time, this time, this time!'

I thought I was the only person who closed their eyes when they hit solve. That feeling of opening your eyes, and it's not a common you've seen 1000 times is just amazing. I have long since got Professor and I still keeping doing it for that hand.
My "can't go to sleep, too obssessed" story comes from the old days, when drops for quests could be rare. I had a quest where I needed to collect horns from satyrs. I believe it was in Ashenvale but can't swear to it. It was like 1 am, my wife was telling me to go to bed. The drop rate was terrible. I was like, "if this one doesn't drop it I'm done for the night," and a horn dropped. So I kept going, no luck, and just when I thought, "this is my last kill," another horn dropped. This kept happening, right at the point I was going to give up, another drop and I was pushed on. It was well after 2 am, my wife was pissed, but I finished that quest.
As much as I hated quests like that, now I look back and think "it felt like an acomplishement when it was done." Now quests take like a minute to complete.

My very first tol'vir archaeology find on my alchemist mage was, no kidding, the Vial of the Sands item. I was flabbergasted.

There are too many to count for me. But number one had to be the damned Tiger mount from ZG. I farmed it every three days for countless months. When I heard that ZG was going away, I literally felt panicked. Unfortunately, I never got it, even though I ran that crappy zone for what felt like thousands of times. I got the Raven mount and Rivendare's mounts a day apart after minimal farming. I got the fiery warhorse after about 6 months. But noooooo Tiger, and it was the one I wanted the most. I'm so jealous of NEs and their cat mounts.
The other one had to be the Blue Proto Drake. I farmed it daily for almost 2 years and finally got it a month or so ago.

I spent months killing foxes in Tol Barad to get the fox kit. Every day..over and over. After thousands of foxes I was ready to give up, thinking they must have removed the drop from the game, when it finally dropped! This is the cutest pet I own, and he will be my favorite companion.

I carried around Baron Geddon's half of Thunderfury around with me all through Burning Crusade just in case - JUST IN CASE - someone, somewhere, somehow, sometime, mentioned going to Molten Core.
Took over a year, but I finally found a group and it finally did drop - and in one of my few lucky loot moments, everyone there that had one of the bindings ... had the one that dropped.
And the people rejoiced. *Yay* ^_^

Haha. I read your post and decided I'd do some archaeology, as I haven't done it for awhile. I solve one tol'vir artifact (Tiny Oasis Mosaic) and lo and behold, I get the monkey's paw solve!

Last night was my third time killing Ultraxion and our group received in our cache Experiment 12-B! Amazing, won the roll with a 77. First time I got lucky on a roll for aq very rare drop, people were asking to buy it from me, but when would there be a chance to win the mount again? I had to keep it.

I'd do the same thing!

Trying to find Vyragosa to complete my Frostbitten achievement. Took two weeks just flying around in Storm Peaks and I barely slept. If I slept, I cursed because I KNEW she'd show up then.
I actually saw the TLPD before I ever saw Vyragosa!
(Unfortunately it was a corpse.)
Philster043 Feb 22nd 2012 6:46PM
(Prior to that I thought I was amazingly lucky as I had found all the other rares without much of a problem. It actually took me a month to find all the rares in the Outlands, and another month to find all the rares in Frostbitten, and I actually had an easy time of it - until Vyragosa, who took more time than any of them. So that's my "lucky turned unlucky" story.)
