The Queue: When is the MoP beta starting?

Today's Queue has a question for you, as well as some of my thoughts on the issue. When is the Mists of Pandaria beta starting?
A press tour is happening next month. Some sort of internal alpha testing is going on now, and assuming a mid- to late-summer release, my guess is that the beta test will happen some time in April, which would give three to four months of testing before it's released (July or August).
And that leads directly to the first question in The Queue today ...
Skozz asked:
Any chance that the press event might be the time that Blizzard says, "Hey, it's Mists of Pandaria Beta time!"? Seems like a decent enough reason to not leak information. Something like how, at E3, companies go, "And you can download it TODAY!"
I doubt it. We know Blizzard's got an internal alpha going on that's most likely only accessible within Blizzard HQ, and we know that Mists was in a nicely polished state at BlizzCon 2011. However, that's a long way off from a public beta, especially one that more than 1 million players from the Annual Pass are going to be playing. As I said above, I'd think April (or May at the high end).
Puntable asked:
Why can't all loot be deposited directly into your bags, like it does with loot from bosses?
There are a couple of good reasons.
First, it stops gold farmers and botters from easily farming massive piles of mobs. Of course, computer-aided clicking gets around this, but that kind of behavior is detected a lot easier than one click to loot everything would be.
Second, it provides a natural pause in the gameplay. While you might not like such breaks, the pauses are necessary in order to have a good flow. You want action, then a break, then some action, then a break, and so on ... Without it, you'll get constant killing and play, and that will lead to burnout both in the short and long term. It's to Blizzard's advantage to have some natural low points in the action, and this is one of them. (So are turning in quests, transportation, selling grays.)
Saikoujin asked:
Whatever happened to WoW x64? I know there was a big hullabaloo about it when the patch dropped a few weeks ago, but was it ever *actually* released? I seem to recall it being pulled. Or is it there, but only as a 'use at your own discretion, not yet fully supported' feature? I'd love to use the x64 version, but only once it's been fully vetted.
It's out, but it's just in a beta state. Take a look at our post for the download links. I've been running it constantly, and I'm having no problem. In fact, I've noticed a frame rate increase and overall faster loading times. Quite nice for my raids.
Puntable also asked:
Do you think the portals to the Cata zones will be removed from Stormwind and Orgrimmar when MoP launches?
No. They're necessary to get to the places without having to pull your hair out. Think of trying to get to Vashj'ir on your own, without a portal. I'd rather not, in a big way.
Blizzard removed the other portals from Shat and Dalaran so players wouldn't use them as their home cities anymore. Players are never going to use Vashj'ir as their home base, so there's no real reason to remove them. They'll end up being used in MoP in the same way the portal to the Dark Portal is used now.

IF's layout is terrible, however - you have to run halfway across the city to get from trainers to a mailbox.
Seriously - I'd consider setting a hearth in IF, but the lack of mailboxes is just untenable.

@Chill
Troll rogue. Greatest thing ever was when you would just see a comment in trade pointing out where one was, and they would try to run away while being covered in snowflakes / flowers / turkeys.

I also have my hearth set in Dalaran. Dalaran at night is one of the best single pieces of art in the game.

As soon as it was possible, I moved most of my toons back to Dalaran. There are still a few that use the Hyjal Inn but having easy access to Northrend, the Caverns of Time, the Portal to the Dark Portal make it worth staying there for the most part. And judging from the number of people I see there these days, many other people have opted to do the same thing. Taking my main to the Exodar during Love is in the Air was time-consuming no matter where his hearthstone was.
And frankly, Blizzard is going to have to do something really compelling during Mists to stay in Pandaria once my toons hit 90.

"They'll end up being used in MoP in the same way the portal to the Dark Portal is used now."
Soooo....to gank lowbies.

What kind of information do you think they are going to be releasing during the press conference thing in March?
What are you most hoping to hear more about at the press conference?
Noyou Feb 23rd 2012 11:39AM
I think it will be a lot like when they lift the NDA. A lot of info. Maybe even a developer Q&A. I highly doubt they will release the pandaren mount or what the female looks like- but...you never know. Since we are only getting one race, maybe they will surprise me.
Shinae Feb 23rd 2012 11:48AM
My hopes for the March press release:
- Release date of Mists' beta (even if it's just to tell us "April"),
- Monk talents/abilities, like what we've been shown of existing classes,
- Plans for professions in Mists,
- Confirmation that yaks are indeed the pandaren racial mount (which they've come pretty close to doing already),
- More footage of Pandaria's beauty and pandaren culture,
- A screencap showing their land ravaged by the Horde/Alliance conflict, as I believe many players are underestimating how horrifying it will be to see what our factions are going to do to the place and the pandaren,
- More information about the Sha, the Mantid, and the Mogu,
- Something that I can't imagine now and will be blown away by, in a good way,
- and, even though it's not WoW:MoP, Diablo III's release date. :)

To add on to Shinae's excellent list- confirmation on how many more toons we will get per server.

I love that picture of alpha Goldshire. Wish it was actually like that in game!
desmetlax Feb 23rd 2012 11:22AM
the picture is nice, but if they put it in I think i'd be heartbroken the same way when the killed Old Blanchy…*sniff*
Tri Feb 23rd 2012 3:15PM
I'm not sure why their buildings and character models looked so much better in alpha :O
sweardsman Feb 23rd 2012 11:20AM
What game would that be up top there? (considering of course it isn't wow)
exogenesis. Feb 23rd 2012 11:25AM
If I am not much mistaken, it's WoW as it was during the classic beta.
Shinae Feb 23rd 2012 11:28AM
Of course it's WoW. *points up at Arkonn's comment*
Bapo Feb 23rd 2012 11:59AM
I don't why I like the alpha look better, but I do. Also those buildings remind me of the gilnean houses.

First WoW in-game video ever released.

I see that wow characters used to move their heads to look at what they were targeting. I wish they would have kept that.

Will blizzard ever put in an aoe looting, like if you collect 20 mobs up and kill them all in a lower level instance or somewhere else and they all die ontop of eachother, its hard to loot what you want without looting what you don't want while looting all the bodies. so instead you loot every body at the same time and all the loot from all the bodies are added up in one loot window.
slim1256 Feb 23rd 2012 12:28PM
Brian - I think that's really going to the answer that Adam gave to the auto-depositing of loot into bags question... and, I have to say, I completely disagree with Adam.
The looting features of the game are a pain, and they're one of my big gripes with how the game works. I'm always hovering my cursor over dead mobs, seeing the loot symbol pop up, then it disappears, cause my lootable mob is under another, non-lootable mob. Also - my graphics settings are fairly high, but not tip top, and I spend most of my time at max camera distance because I tend to play melee DPS (because if I'm not fully zoomed out all I can see is boss-ass). This makes seeing the "loot sparkle" a bit tough when the ground is cluttered with corpses!
Personally, I feel looting completely DISRUPTS the flow of the game. I'd prefer an AOE loot function, but I'd settle for a command that was, essentially, a "Loot Nearest Lootable Mob" that I could spam until everything lootable in range was looted.
I'm positive that I've left many, many trash mobs in raids unlooted, if for no other reason than because I couldn't tell that they were there, holding my loots.
Finally - I personally think that the answer of "We're going to make your game more cumbersome to play to hinder gold farmers" is a TERRIBLE response. There are other ways to root out gold farmers - use those, and let me have a more enjoyable game to play!
(In other news, pretty sure this post has broken the all time record for the number of appearances of the word "loot")
