Here are my two cents, and in the effort of full disclosure I am a 10 man raider. That being said, it isn't because I want to be, it's because I am forced to be. I am on a server that used to have a solid, not thriving, but decent raiding culture. Due to server transfers and attrition, our server has lost a lot of it's end game raiding base. The lower population isn't even half the problem, nor is the "carrot" at the end of the 25 man instances. I agree that 10 man raiding is more difficult. Far less room for error even. Lock out mechanics even play an issue, but with thousands even on low pop servers, why are we unable to fill a 25 man raid with a few PUGS?Intolerance.We have forgotten how to teach people to raid with us. Everyone is an elitist now, most of my raid team is, in fact. We have zero patience to explain fights and expectations to new players, so those players have a sour taste for raiding. Now I am not saying that certain expectations should be met, but most of the raiding I have been involved with has gone from flexible and adapting to the team members, to inflexible and forcing people to adapt to the raid team at hand. When we were fielding 40 man raid to take down Onyxia we were having to pug half of Org to do it. It forced flexibility or you don't get to raid. I feel like the player base for WoW has change some, they don't have as much playing time as before, so they are looking for the fast track to getting to the end instead of enjoying the experience getting there. Only one person I play with now was active in the end game during vanilla, and there is one thing we both agree on. None of the people that are actively running the raids on our server now would have ever downed Onyxia or even gotten 40 people moving in the same direction. Our player base is killing 25 mans, not game mechanics. Lack of patience or flexibility = fewer people want to play with you = not filling 25 man teams. Don't believe me? Try pugging 6 healers from your server for a fresh 25 man run and see what happens. If they aren't already in a group it's because someone probably said they aren't good enough. We should be helping them get good enough, not telling them you're not good enough. You may just add some solid spots into your guild roster. Want 25 mans to stay around, it starts with the communities trying to field them. Before mechanics, loot, incentives, or schedules really come into play, you have to have people willing to run with you before you worry about the other stuff, and that falls squarely on the raid leader's head.

Wonderful post Contessa.Blizzard has said before that the numbers of subscribers don't reflect the amount of people joining and leaving the game.That means we are always having new players hit the level cap and want to be involved in the end game, and all too often they're greeted with ridicule and scorn.The LFR system, which is where most new players seem to be getting their introduction, is a horrible environment. Greed, intolerance, and laziness are present on almost every pug run.The solution to all this then is in our hands. Each one of us that wants WoW to be a better environment, is responsible for encouraging that environment.Want more 25 man raiders? Raise them up, teach them, encourage them : )

Good points. This reminds me of a comment somebody left a few weeks back, where they felt that WoW had changed from a pastime to a professional sport. There are too many players who've lost their sense of fun; they play to win (as defined by item level or gold or what have you) and all those other people in the group are simply obstacles to that goal.The results are pretty obvious: snide comments, dropping after a single wipe, vote kicking the mage because he barely meets the gear requirement, vote kicking the druid because it's her first time in that instance, vote kicking the hunter because he's Brazilian. This sort of behavior is bad enough in a 5-man dungeon, where even a tank can be quickly replaced, but it can be fatal to a raid team.

We don't really have a sense of community any more. Used to be, we were all out in the world, pugging raids, grouping for quests, assaulting world bosses, or just goofing around.Now, we sit in front of the AH in Orgrimmar, juggling our addons, waiting for our queue to pop up so we can race through a few repeated bosses and hopefully get some loot without being too inconvenienced by the strangers we'll never see again.The World of Warcraft has become a little less small town and a little more New York City.

I agree completely. We are all responsible for creating the WoW Community that we want. If people always say "Vote kick the lowest 3 dps" - btw, there will ALWAYS be lowest 3 dps - in the LFR system, and that may be a place that MANY people experience their FIRST RAID, or have people shame them by repeatedly posting meters, that could discourage potential raiders.If guilds are doing the same, I can see why people won't stick around. I say, don't tolerate bad behavior that can cause other people to not enjoy the game (bullying people, ninjas, always being late for no good reason), but help those who have inexperience or problems with being undergeared. Help the good people become better players and boot the asshats - even if they ARE the best healers or the top dps. Yeah, this will cause your team to shrink. If you can PuG people, and become known as the guild who won't put up with crap but will help players learn, maybe you'll have the kind of people you want PuGging with you, and who knows, maybe joining your guild (or becoming a sort of regular PuG member). It's sad to hear that many 25 mans "have" to put up with unpleasant personalities in order to fill the roster. Maybe that should be as much a part of recruiting as looking at their gear, their UI screenshots, talents, etc . . . maybe even more so. The more pleasant people you have, the more people will enjoy the experience. The more people enjoy the experience, the more they are apt to be happy players who show up and stick around.
