Two Bosses Enter: Mannoroth vs. Asira Dawnslayer

Is it unfair to match up a Twilight's Hammer blood elf assassin against one of the most feared and dangerous beings in the entire Burning Legion? Well, sure, but fair treatment was never shown to the blood elves -- right, Kael'thas? Have fun getting demolished, Asira. We hardly knew ye.
Queen Azshara had a more difficult fight on her hands last week than I had originally thought. I thought would be a quick and dirty bout that would allow Azshara to move on to the next round, but Hagara still put up a solid fight, losing the round by just under 400 votes. Big props to newcomer Hagara Stormbinder for not being completely, utterly destroyed.
Focus, people. There's a pit lord in the arena, and he definitely isn't happy. Will Asira Dawnslayer and allies (of course she gets Illidan -- how the heck would this go otherwise?!) be able to best Mannoroth the Flayer and might of the Burning Legion? I have no idea ... but you do.

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

I think that when I describe Mannoroth as "The Big Dog," I'm not being facetious. The dude is top-dollar demon, big man on Twisting Nether campus. Mannoroth was like the quarterback of the Burning Legion varsity football team, being one of the first demons to hit the ground on Azeroth. Archimonde likes this guy so much that he was his right-hand pit lord.
Even though Mannoroth was pushed back into the Twisting Nether, his power was so great that it was his blood that enslaved the orcs of Draenor, brought death and destruction twice to Azeroth, and was ultimately felled by Grom Hellscream and Thrall after reaching Kalimdor.
This is not the Mannoroth we will be dealing with. Oh no, this is Mannoroth from the Well of Eternity, a young brute ready and able to slaughter the night elves and anything else in his path of destruction. Varo'then and Mannoroth come as a pair, and Mannoroth will act in a similar fashion as his encounter at the end of the 5-man. Use your imaginations -- I think you guys will do fine with this diverse and awesome villain.
Read up on all of the abilities of the Mannoroth fight at Wowhead, since there are a zillion of them. Remember, after Varo'then dies (or is eaten/consumed/sacrificed), his blade can be used to pierce Mannoroth.

We do not know much of Asira Sunbright. We do know that Asira Sunbright was an incredibly talented assassin and mercenary and, even though she could be leery of the benefactor, still always had a price. This time, the price was paid by The Twilight's Hammer cult, and the check was signed Cho'Gall. That is, if that check is still valid ...
Now known as Asira Dawnslayer, this drake-killing, Thrall-hunting, smoke-clouding pain in the butt makes for a challenging opponent when people start to panic. Her blade barrier can be tricky, as well as the smoke bombs that make it impossible to see in or out of the thick cloud. She's dangerous and not to be underestimated.
When you are considering who wins or loses this round, remember that much like in game, Thrall will run in and randomly drop a totem in a totally unnecessary and dangerous place and think to himself that he's doing a good job.
Asira Dawnslayer's abilities include:
- Mark of Silence Asira marks a target for 20 seconds. When that target casts a spell, Asira throws a knife at the target. The knife will hit the first target in its path.
- Choking Smoke Bomb Asira throws down a smoke bomb, creating a thick fog that her opponents cannot target in and out of. Also, the gas inflicts nature damage.
- Blade Barrier At 30% health, Asira puts up a blade barrier reducing her incoming damage below 40,000 to 1. The barrier is removed when damage above the 40,000 threshold is done to her. Lesser Blade Barrier goes up after the Blade Barrier breaks but only requires 30,000 damage to break.
- Thrall helps, but not really. He did not ask for this.

Last Week's Winner: Queen Azshara
The most beautiful night elf in all of Azeroth successfully commanded her forces against Hagara Stormbinder's tempests and fury. Readers had Hagara put up a good fight, and the voting was much closer than I had originally imagined. I just can't help but feel bad for some of the bosses in Dragon Soul because Hagara is a great boss, and I hope she is remembered for a long time. However, I don't think people will remember Hagara as a legacy. Later, you'll read a comment by Sarah Bee, which gives us a bit of a hint as how Hagara might have been more immortalized.
Reader Rai is in the Queen's corner with a good point about the loyalty of Azshara's battlemages and their undying devotion to their leader. Not only can we assume some basic intelligence and reaction from Azshara's devoted, but I would say that it's a good policy to count the spirit of the competition and make each fight work for each boss fight in a fun, unique way. For instance, when I read Rai and Philster043's comments, I was instantly transported to a world where Azshara was locked in her little bubble while commanding her "raid team" to take on Hagara. If Raid Finder can do it, can Azshara's squad? Answer this one carefully, friends.
Azshara's battlemages are faithfully devoted to her and willing to give their lives: it's a safe assumption that they could handle the ice phase with ease, especially considering some are trained in frost magic. It's not really anything that affects the mechanics, but it'd be fun for them to yell.I'm quoting GhostWhoWalks again, not because I liked the comment (which I did) but because of an interesting question of the nature of fight mechanics. Can certain spells be cast when the number of people on the field is a certain number? Do these bosses even "think" about that when there aren't so many opponents? Sure, Azshara has abilities that charm your whole party, but is Azshara thinking about charming a party when fighting against one person? I think that if you ever had this conversation with yourself, you're "getting" it:
The lightning phase would have to be possible with two/three people (if Azshara herself even moves the entire fight - she's immune to damage after all) out of fairness, and I doubt the magi would have much trouble with that.
It comes down to timing. I'm going to assume that her Servant of the Queen is forbidden here, otherwise she'd be able to control Hagara shortly before completely dominating her (with Total Obedience, it's not that sort of fight).
Long story short, I'd give this one to Azshara as she's most likely clever enough to use Total Obedience WHILE HAGARA IS STUNNED AFTER A LIGHTNING/FROST PHASE. That's the key thing here.
First, you would think that Azshara could simply put a Hand on Hagara and that would be the end of it. However, as I have learned through soloing old instances, many boss mechanics that rely on multiple party members being present fizzle when there's only one person around (for example, Herald Volazj in Ahn'Kahet will still try and cast Insanity, but if there is only one party member present, nothing happens). CAN Azshara cast Hand when Hagara is the only opponent around? I'm...not sure. Similarly, if Hagara shields herself with her ice or lightning phases, does the shield protect her from Azshara's mind control effects? It's all about the substance, right? Finally, Sarah Bee makes a good point, one that we had originally predicted as a lock for a boss fight yet turned out to be anything but:
I'm going to give my vote to Hagara, but I won't be surprised if Azshara ends up winning in the end.
You can so tell that Magatha Grimtotem was originally going to be in Dragon Soul instead of Hagara.Oh, how much I would have loved to have Magatha Grimtotem at the end of Cataclysm as a boss to truly bookend this period in Azeroth's history. Magatha has already caused so much damage and destruction that it's just plain unfair at this point, and the pieces that she set in motion at the beginning of the expansion could have been wrapped up nicely. However, because Magatha's story hasn't ended, we hold on to the possibility of seeing her in the future.

I'm going with Asira. She murders Varo'then convincingly, impales Manny with the sword, and her Mark of Silence plus Smoke Bombs keep him effectively locked down and unable to use his demon magic while she gradly butchers the crap out of him. Asira for the bloody win!
monotype Feb 27th 2012 5:00PM
Mannoroth doesn't use mana, so mark of silence won't do diddly against him.
duo_x5 Feb 27th 2012 5:04PM
I'd say Mannorth or a draw. Why you ask? Cause Manny is a big steaming pile of death and really isn't giving a fair look in the dungeon. I'm going with his WC3 abilites. Marks of death for everybody.
And if he loses I'd say a draw. Why? Ask Grom what happens when a anhilon(?) blows up.
Rai Feb 27th 2012 5:13PM
As said above, it's the Mannoroth in this version of the instance. Plus, there's nothing about only people who use mana being silenced - I get silenced on my rogue all the time.
duo_x5 Feb 27th 2012 5:44PM
Well ok I'm new to this part of site but if I remeber correctly a person who is by all means a very powerful individual is the guy tanking manny. Also it takes a weapon to give the players a buff the means to actually do enough damage to our huge friend to actually beat him back not kill him. Need I say more. Without Illidan's ridiculously high dodge chance I beat for her it'll be like a tank going up against instructor rav back in vanilla,
monotype Feb 27th 2012 6:29PM
Really? That's weird. I was under the impression that Asira's mark only silences casters. I don't get silenced on any of my melee toons, and on my hunter, I always stand in front of healers to block the daggers.
SR Feb 27th 2012 6:44PM
I doubt retadins or enhancement shamans get silenced, and Mannoroth looks a LOT more like a melee than a caster to me.
monotype Feb 27th 2012 4:58PM
Fel Fire doesn't target. Game, set, match.
Jarolibul7 Feb 27th 2012 5:19PM
As explained in the article, Asira would be clever enough to MoS manny And considering she has Illidian (Who taunts!) She could effectively destroy Mannoroth.
Rai Feb 27th 2012 5:17PM
I'd have to give it to Asira. While it'd be a fairly even fight between her and Varo'then, he'd have less health and Choking Smoke Bomb would be enough to finish him off.
Mannoroth gets pierced by the sword. There's a fair amount of time before the first adds would appear, and they're probably not smart enough to block the daggers from Mark of Silence, meaning Mannoroth would spend most of his time fighting Illidan. On the offchance he'd get a Fel Inferno off, there's Choking Smoke Bomb - which by the way he probably wouldn't move out of. This fight is more one-sided than it appears, but there is a minor chance for victory for Mannoroth.
It depends on Thrall. Is Thrall smart enough to block the daggers? He probably wouldn't, considering Mannoroth's size.
So as said above, I'd give it to Asira. It'd be a long fight but she has the toolbox to do it - and I doubt her minions would be powerful enough to break through her Blade Barrier, or move out of her Choking Smoke Bomb.
Ilmyrn Feb 27th 2012 5:32PM
Look, Mannaroth is going to win this, hands down, because the voting is a popularity contest.
That said, if there was ever a matchup that's a lock for one fighter, it's this one. Mechanically, logically, Asira blows Mannaroth out of the water.
Really, the only catch will be Varo'then. After that, the fight is cruise control. Tyrande kills the demons (And when she gets locked down? Smoke bomb + Mark of Silence means she'll be back up immediately), Illidan does a better job tanking than half the pugs I've seen, and Thrall drops his totems a hundred yards away from the fight, then melees as a (presumably) Elemental Shaman.
Game, set, match.
Andrew Feb 27th 2012 5:59PM
The whole issue here is that when we fight Mannoroth in the dungeon, we have the help of both Illidan Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind. Without them, we would have been overrun by smaller demons in an instant, and we would have had to tank Mannoroth ourselves. Illidan has a 90% dodge chance buff the entire time he tanks Mannoroth, and I'm pretty sure Asira doesn't have that. Without the two of them, Asira is taking on the full brunt of Mannoroth's felblade, and his massive following of demons (which, as we've seen, range from Fel Guards to Dreadlords and beyond).
While she may still be able to do a lot of damage to him with Varo'then's sword lodged in Mannoroth's chest, Mannoroth's full fury is turned on her the entire time. This is NOT a fight she can win.
Saf Feb 27th 2012 6:22PM
Remember Andrew, the NPCs that help us in the 2 encounters are also helping the 2 bosses. So Illidan and Tyrande will be helping Asira, while Thrall will be... Umm... "Helping" Manny.
While Asira has the ability to do this quite well with just Illidan and Tyrande's help, as previous commenters have stated; Thrall is on Mannoroth's side. Considering how big Mannoroth's hit box is, and how big an area Thrall's totem covers, I'd say Manny has a pretty dawn good chance of reaching a full 10 stacks of Thrall's buff, increasing his damage and health by 50%. May not mean a whole ton with how well Illidan tanks him, but considering he has ~98 million health baseline, adding another ~49 mil to that will just make Asira /afk from boredom.
Once Manny notices that Asira is AFK, he can throw out an empowered Fel Firestorm and watch Asira DIAF. Assuming of course that Tyrande has enough arrows to keep all of those demons at bay for the entended time...
TL;DR version... Thrall buffs Manny with totem; Manny gets major health increase; Asira goes /afk out of boredom; Manny pwns her with a surprise Fel Firestorm + add overrun combo; Thrall pats himself on the back for being such a good Shaman...
GhostWhoWalks Feb 27th 2012 7:37PM
Hm, I seem to be on something of a roll here.
I'm going to take the unpopular side in this match-up, not to be controversial, but because I seriously think Asira can take the win in this fight, and easily. Why? Because of one simple little quote:
"(of course she gets Illidan -- how the heck would this go otherwise?!)"
Asira has Illidan tanking for her. Whatever major advantage Mannoroth could have brought to the fight has instantly been negated due to the fact that Asira will have to deal with everything BUT the mighty Pit Lord himself.
Now, I've done this fight as all three roles (tank, healer and DPS), so I know the details inside and out. Mannoroth/Varo'then is primarily a healer fight in the first phase, since all of the AoE that goes flying around needs to be taken care of, and a tank fight in the second phase, since the tank needs to keep all of the adds contained and off of the rest of their party. Note that, since Asira is alone, AoE isn't as dangerous and the adds aren't as much of a problem as they would be in a full-party situation.
So let's look at how the fight would play out. Illidan would engage Mannoroth, Asira engages Varo'then and Tyrande holds back the adds. Varo'then's Magistrike Arc adds extra damage to some of his hits, but otherwise it's just two melee fighters wailing on each other. Asira's a fleet-footed Rogue, so she can easily evade the Fel Firestorm and eventually take down Varo'then. She goes to start stabbing Mannoroth in his ankles, who opens the Nether Tear and brings in the Zerg Rush of adds. For anyone else, this would be a problem; for Asira, she can raise her Blade Barrier to negate the already weak hits from the mob of demons and let her Smoke Bomb clear out the adds while she continues shanking the big guy.
The only complication would come when Mannoroth summons his Infernals; I speak from personal experience when I say that if multiple Infernals land on you, that's a whole truckload of damage being delivered in a very short amount of time (I enjoy telling PuGs about the time my Warlock got Goomba Stomped by a trio of Infernals and instantly killed; one of the most hilarious ways to die that I've ever seen). However, this would only break her Blade Barrier, not kill her, and shortly after this happens Illidan turns on your God Mode, so the fight's as good as over by that point. Mannoroth's been banished back to the Nether and Asira's barely broken a sweat.
Vaniya-EluneWRA Feb 27th 2012 7:41PM
Asira crouches behind the arm bone of the massive dragon, eyes following Thrall and the adventurers as they fought through the cultist lackeys. Then, her target, a red drake, flies into view. She takes a running start and jumps towards the drake. As she is gliding through the air, the drake stops, and its scales turns bronze as Asira falls into a portal. "That was easy..." mumbled Chromie.
Asira falls through the bronze timeway, landing deftly on the scorched ground. "What the.." she muses, then a giant pit lord catches her attention. "Some help would be appreciated, stranger!" cried a night elf with a blindfold on. He was fighting, somehow, the pit lord without being hit.
Before Asira can make sense of this, another elf cries "For Azshara! for our Queen!" Varo'then runs at her, sword held high. Leaping out of the way, Asira throws one of her enchanted daggers at Varo'then, binding his tongue with magic.
Varo'then and Asira trade blows for a while, and soon she has him on his knees. Mustering all his strength, Varo'then casts off Asira's hex, shouting "Mannoroth! Aid me!" The demon opened a portal, from which waves of lesser demons poured forth from.
"Damn." Asira cried. Seeing Varo'then trying to stand, she cut him down swiftly. By that time, the demons had reached her, and in return she used a fan of knives to cut swathes of them down. Mannoroth, still dealing with Illidan, sent two Nazrethim to deal with her once and for all. They landed a ways from her, and channeled their dark and debilitating magic on her. Being the skilled assassin she was, Asira knew she would fall in a matter of seconds if she did nothing.
So she threw her daggers, the last weapons on her, at them. The projectiles struck home, and the nazrethim burst into clouds of dark energy. But Asira was running out of options. Still, demons poured through the portal, so she grabbed Varo'then's crackling sword from the ground and began cutting down the demons. Reaching the portal, she disrupted its focus by using the enchanted sword.
At that moment, she heard a cry from behind her. Turning to look, she saw Illidan flyin through the air, falling quite far away. "Illidan!" cried the previously unseen night elven woman, as she dashed to his aid. "I guess it comes down to you and me then." said Asira, turning her attention to the pit lord.
Letting loose a war cry, Asira hurled the blade at Mannoroth, Landing a direct hit. "AAAUUGGHH!" cried Mannoroth. Growing tired of the Rabble, he summoned a firestorm of fel energy, pretending to focus all his attention on maintaining it. In reality, as Asira bobbed and weaved from the firestorm, Mannoroth was cleverly opening a connection to the Twisting Nether.
Grabbing her daggers from the twisted armor of the nazrethim, Asira formed a plan in her head. Silence the oaf when he was done, drop a smoke bomb, and cut his oversized throat. Simple was often the best. What she wasn't expecting was, when the fire cleared, another army of demons was waiting for her. Shit. She dropped a smoke bomb, Planning to flee from the scene. But when she went to run, she found a surprise. There was the pit lord's hand, a split second from grabbing her. Her last thought was of how she never got the payment for the last job.
Mannoroth wiped the elf blood n' bits off his hand on the grass. Ready to take over the world now, he turned his attention to the elves he had earlier lost track of. They had just finished slaughtering his army. The female cried "Goddess, guide my arrows!" and fired at him. The arrows, while not fatal, distracted him from the other elf, who cut his connection to the portal in the well. "Noooooooooooo!!!!!!" he cried as he was pulled into the well.
A voice, rather dragon sounding, whispered in his ear "take the Druid with you!" and so Mannoroth's last act on Azeroth was taking Malfurion with him to the Nether. Let's hope he doesn't make it back. Knaak on wood. (Knaak pun courtesy of Ask a Faction Leader: Chromie)
Ballmung Feb 27th 2012 8:44PM
I'm going with Asira here. With npc help even this great assassin can easily down the pit lord. Fight begins and the assassin for hire can take Varo'then in single combat. The demons are no problem with a little help from smoke bomb. After he's taken care of the two dreadlords attacking Tyrande will go down quickly. Sword stuck in Mannoroth we take down the pit lord. Illidan is tanking him so no worries there. As for the adds I expect her to have a problem up until she puts up blade barrier. The demons don't hit that hard by themselves and blade barrier is broken by a single hit, not cumulative damage. At that point Asira just waits for Tyrande to run out of arrows so Illidan decides to superbuff everyone and finish off Mannoroth.
Thrall did not help. He threw the totem to some demon far away from everything that died too quick to benefit.
clundgren Feb 28th 2012 3:12AM
I'm a bit shocked at the results so far. I suspect most folks are voting without realizing that Asira gets Tyrande and Illidan.
Okay, Mannoroth gets Thrall...for what he's worth. Guy can't even take down oozes. But I digress.
Illidan tanks the big guy, Tyrande takes out the adds, and Asira's abilities are tailor made for when Mannoroth does his big summonings. Other than that, she just has to stand behind him, stay out of fire, and dps.
This one should be a slam dunk. C'est la vie.
orkmjolhus Feb 28th 2012 5:36AM
Dang it, does Asira get more allies beyind Illiden or not??? cause i can not see anywhere in the rules that Tyrande is their, and if she isent this fight is MUCH closer then what ppl here are saying its gonna be. (Thrall is meantiond on Asira´s toolkit, so i cant tell if he helps Asira or Manny, my best bet is manny however)
Reis Feb 28th 2012 8:59AM
First consider Mannoroth, upon losing 74,694,600 of his 99,592,800 health will have to be pulled back into the portal. Asira's smokebomb does 200,000 damage every 40 seconds and Mannoroth won't move out of it. If she does nothing but throw smoke bombs on him it takes less than 400 to kill him. That may seem like a lot, but (assuming I rolled a 20 on my math check this morning) it's only about 4 hours of casting smoke bomb alone. That assumes she does nothing else but smoke bomb, which she doesn't.
Ilidan is also doing 20000 damage every 3 seconds plus his melee and Darklance strikes (27975 to 32025 damage), all while Mannoroth is silenced due to Asira's chaining Mark of Silence with Throw Knife, which refreshes the silence for 2.5 seconds. Mannoroth can only do damage if she is close then as he cannot cast Fel Firestorm while silenced, and until she gets the Gift of Sargeras, which heals for 20% every 2 seconds and deals 30000 fire damage every 2 seconds, she will wisely and obviously stay at range, thereby removing any opportunity for Mannoroth to hurt her. The adds easily go down with Tyrande's help and Varothen, as he only has one ability, would have to hit her over 220 times to kill her, which he cannot do in the short time he will be alive.
Second, remember that most people will vote for who they like, not who actually would win based on abilities, as Asira can easily and obviously negate most of the enemies abilities in this fight.
Thus, the results should be strongly skewed towards Asira but won't be as the big green demon is cooler than the rogue for most people (Though all us rogues know that isn't true :) ).
P.S. I just want to point out, strip all the adds and allies away, and just Asira and Mannoroth in a ring still goes to Asira, as he doesn't walk and has only one ranged spell, and she will just stay at range and silence and smoke bomb him all day until he dies. Even if he does decide to walk, as there is no Illidan to tank him in place, she can easily move out of reach and continue silencing and smoke bombing and knife throwing him to death.
Hob Feb 28th 2012 10:56AM
If it were that easy, though, Mannoroth wouldn't be one of the most formidable demons in the universe.
/lands on alien world, prepares to destroy it
/single alien rogue jumps out, evades, kills him by throwing knives
/Kil'Jaeden and Archimonde look at each other in surprise
