Breakfast Topic: Is "For the Horde" obsolete?

The Forsaken are busy doing their own thing, as they always have. Vol'jin and the trolls were last seen sending emissaries to the Alliance to help contain the Zandalari. The tauren are still mourning Cairne and have little love for Garrosh. The blood elves lost their reason to stay in the Horde at the end of The Burning Crusade and seem to be sustained solely by inertia at this point. The only loyal Hordies left are the orcs themselves and the goblins, a race long known for their steadfast loyalties.
Of course, the Alliance isn't all too chummy, either. What do you think? Do the races need new battle cries, or will Mists of Pandaria spur a new wave of unity?

Many tomatoes were thrown, enough to open a ketchup factory... But it was worth it. Worth it enough to present a possible warcry that didn't exclude the newer races who would only raise an eyebrow to worthy cries such as 'For Lordaeron!', 'Remember Theremore!' or 'Lothar!'
... Not everyone in the Alliance fights for only the Light, or only for Glory, and in battle, grammar means little. In battle, you shout what is in your heart, and that's what came out for me. I am glad there are others whose hearts ring along with with what's on display, giving me a little more hope that one day, we will truly be proud of this mighty faction that is simply caught in the Horde's shadow.
Never forget. Never surrender. For Light and Glory, brothers.
We are Alliance.

Didn't some dev suggest "have mercy!" as the alliance warcry...?
Swifteye Mar 2nd 2012 8:09AM
I am so, so, so very tired of this argument in absolutely all of its iterations.
I was "For the Horde!" for a very long time, but nobody can deny that we are a completely fragmented group at this point. And I just... don't want to support the Horde *or* the Alliance specifically anymore.
Screw it. From now on, if it ain't either "For the Knights of the Ebon Blade" or else "For the Earth Mother", it ain't worth my time and passion.

For Khazmodan!

I think that the upcoming warring in MoP could be the only thing that could unify the respective factions. Raze Theremore, kill Velen, pollute the Sunwell, etc.

@Sqtsquish
I have very little interest in Warcraft lore and don't care too much about Horde/Alliance rivalry, although I do PvP extensively. That being said, having played my Draenei almost exclusively since the day BC popped, allowing the Horde to kill Velen would borderline piss me off FOR REAL.

I’d guess “For the Horde” will have some staying power simply because it’s pithy and it’s more a taunt to the Allies than a statement of unity.
That being said, the biggest laugh I ever got in game was when my Forsaken character helped another Hordie out. The Horde toon whispered thanks and I replied “no prob – for the horde and whatever…”. I figure that was an appropriate welcome to Silverpine.
viciouspen Mar 2nd 2012 8:12AM
Yeah the Horde doesn't even seem to be for itself lately.
It's more like "For Garrosh!"
As a mainly alliance player i would like to interject one thing here.
The game has been out for how long....7 years?
And they're only NOW saying "hey...we need to get the Alliance a rallying cry too!"
7 years....and only now?
seriously :P What the eff lol
viciouspen Mar 2nd 2012 8:30AM
I'm still in favor of "Glory to the Alliance".
one I think it just fits.
Secondly I like the dev's explination that the horde's was "For the horde" because they're more primitive and the alliance is more cultured and elloquent so theirs can have more syllables.
arawn.chernobog Mar 2nd 2012 8:41AM
Think: "longer then 7 years"
For the Horde has been around since Warcraft 1, the Alliance has had several "slogans" that attempted the take the same place "For the Horde" has and they all subsequently failed (not being vicious enough, being too long, etc.):
- "Grab your sword and fight the Horde"

I'm sorry but there is no way that this has just been some super hard problem that they haven't been able to tackle yet.
i give blizz credit where they're due and they are often due much credit, but, this is one major ball dropped on their part. Not a super difficult problem, just something they haven't bothered with enough to actually fix it. It's a stupid catch phrase, they're not that hard.
As I said, and they wonder why the faction favoritism thing has grown to such a head as it did in the wake of the last blizzcon and all that.
it just comes off as....irresponsible for such a large corporate entity as they are.
Luotian Mar 2nd 2012 9:51AM
@viciouspen: I would argue it isn't Blizzard's fault at all. They're right in saying that Blizzard has *tried*. The thing is, the playerbase didn't like them. If they playerbase wants one so badly, stop rejecting them or come up with one on your own.

I'm interested to see what good ol' Garry does in Mists. If (as I suspect he will) he is the major instigator of the war, launching a surprise offensive on the Alliance and showing little care for anything but conquest and battle, I suspect that Cairne and Lor'themar will object, Vol'jin will say "screw it", and Sylvanas will sneak in behind to collect the corpses (while staying out of the fight.)
Of course, if everyone walks away from the Horde, Garry's going to call them traitors, and we may have the Orcs turning on their former allies.
Alysandir Mar 2nd 2012 4:13PM
To me, the answer is so simple...what is the one phrase *everyone* associates with playing in the Alliance? The one ideal that all members, regardless of class or creed can get behind?
YOU NO TAKE CANDLE!!!!
Elenac Mar 3rd 2012 6:14PM
Hmm, You No Take Candle!!! Hmm, that actually is pretty good! I rather shout that as a gnome than something about some human business. Heck, I rather use some dwarven battle cry than some Stormwind commité crap. But, You No Take Candle fits pretty well in my mouth... I can see myself shouting that while running out of the AB gates, or riding the SotA demos straight into a gate. It actually works in such situations much better than For Gnomeregan!
mamaryno Mar 2nd 2012 8:20AM
Well, I rather like "For the Lion!". I mean it would be great if we acually had a Lion of the alliance. Maybe, just maybe, if Blizzard sees fit to make the Alliance more than just the target of the horde, make the alliance actually proactive instead of reactive in MoP, and allows Varian to grow a pair, "For the Lion!" might fit. A
girl can dream can't she?
Rich Mar 2nd 2012 9:06AM
Yes, I'm with you mamaryno. FOR THE LOIN!!
ah...crap.
andysdavis Mar 2nd 2012 11:27AM
Yes, this! I've always thought something along the lines of "For the Lion!" or "We are the Lion!" would be so cool! There's actually a song (albeit a relatively heavy metalcore song) that I think of every time the discussion of an alliance battlecry comes up: Phinehas - "I Am The Lion". Right around the 3:57 mark in the song if you watch the video on youtube, he says "Here I am. You'll know my voice. I am the Lion!" which could be shortened to just "I am the Lion!" but either way I think it's a great battlecry.

Are Twinkies obsolete?!
FOR THE HORDE!
Levi Mar 2nd 2012 8:26AM
I have a macro "FOR THE HORDE!!...erm.....I mean......FOR STORMWIND!" on my human rogue. I've played to 85 on both sides, and really at this point, there is no "faction" unity. Hell, the "banner" race for the Alliance has an ability called "Every Man for Himself". That's the rallying cry now - "FOR ME! unlesseverythingsbeingdestroyedandeventhen FOR ME!". From a lore standpoint we're killing Deathwing to save the world, not to save the Horde or the Alliance specifically. From a gameplay standpoint, we're doing it for one of two reasons - for loot, or for bragging rights. Right now, in PVP, I could care less who it is I'm backstabbing, as long as I get an HK for it. If that red name happens to be from my own team, oh well, he's going down.
