Brennvin -- Where'd your name come from?
This name was inspired by a song from a band I really enjoy, though slightly altered. My actual World of Warcraft character names come from a variety of things; including an instrument, a soccer stadium, a vehicle model, etc. I often find myself taking forever just trying to figure out that perfect name for every new character. :P

Boozard Mar 6th 2012 7:52AM
my character names are variations of my family's names. boozard is a variation of my sons name, yelyah is a variation of my wife's name, and alexa is usually taken but that's my daughter's name.
Dalekz Mar 6th 2012 8:14AM
I based mine off of the following TV Shows:
Kindred: The Embraced
Firefly
Dark Shadows
Dalekz Mar 6th 2012 8:16AM
...and Doctor Who!
byronius_prime Mar 6th 2012 8:22AM
My rogue is named Kryptmann, for an inquisitor from W40K. My DK would be called Byronius, which happens to be what friends call me IRL. Some imposter stole it though, so I named him Conrad, from Konrad Curze, a primarch from W40K. Finally my mage's called Ashnaar, that's a TCG name of a Draenei mage.
Partholona Mar 6th 2012 8:24AM
My main is a blood elf hunter named Partholona it comes from celtic mythology and a book by PC Cast. My holy priest is Agapanthus the scientific name for the african lily. I try to find names that I feel suit the personality of the toon I am making. My dk for example is Altruista, limited to or caring only about yourself and your own needs (one of the definitions of altruistic)
bumblebeas Mar 6th 2012 8:46AM
since all of my toons are Tauren , i have kind of kept a beef theme going.
Kobesan - main hunter, skinner/miner, most pets are named for diseases
Buccleuch - alt druid, alchemy/herblist
Abattoir - alt death knight
Kobae - alt warrior
Haggis - bank alt, hunter, pet is named pluck, you have to have a wee bit of pluck to have a good haggis
Alysandir Mar 6th 2012 9:09AM
Alysandir - my SCAdian name; Scottish for Alexander.
Dusk - Just sounded like a cool name for a dark-skinned Draenei.
Rowan - my late wife's main, whom I transferred after her passing so it would live on.
Darkchilde - shadow priest Draenei - little a "dark child" of a race that follows the Light.
Postlewaite - shamelessly stolen from "Open Range;" seemed fitting for a gunman (hunter).
Failsprocket - gnomes get serious names? C'mon...
jenny Mar 6th 2012 9:34AM
rosemarylee after my favorite former supervisor
saunter because human males looked like they sauntered around
kuroma after my favorite anime character. i changed one letter
evoxpisces Mar 6th 2012 9:35AM
My characters names:
Belias (Goblin Rogue) - name of my favorite esper in Final Fantasy XII
Zandt (Goblin Shaman) - name of the main villain in the novel I've been writing
Belome (Goblin Death Knight) - name of a weird mini boss in Super Mario RPG
Rawley (Goblin Warrior) - just sounded cool
Piscean (Troll Druid) - because I'm a pisces
Velquian (Blood Elf Paladin) - name of main character in the novel I've been writing
Foomy (Goblin Warlock) - name of a battle pet you get in Lufia 2
Ziggurat (Goblin Hunter) - name of a character from Xenosaga
Ceida (Goblin Priest) - name of female lead in the novel I've been writing
There are more but those are all the ones I still play, which is more than enough if you ask me.
And yes I really do love Goblins that much.
othragon Mar 6th 2012 10:11AM
Most of my character's names are from Filipe Faria's "Chronicles of Allarya", wich is a portuguese fantasy book collection.
Othragon, Nekkr, Slayra, Hazabel, and Garogar.
There's also a little homage to the Silmarillion, in the form of my druid, Eöl ;)
D4 Mar 6th 2012 10:23AM
All my character names start with D. Working within that:
for my first draenei, I fiddled with Greek-to-Russian names and came out with Dimitros.
For my draenei mage, I started with Deryni from the Kurtz books and went to Derynos to echo Dimitros.
My warrior similarly started as Dorsai and went to Dorsa.
My DK is Durance, to evoke both the idea of endurance (since I was hoping to tank with him) and the idea of being imprisoned by the chains of unlife.
My gnome banker is Dzurich, for a reference to the Gnomes of Zurich. Sadly, no reference to Brust's Dzur except maybe in temperament a bit. And he's not even my primary banker anymore.
My goblin rogue is Ducata, in reference to ducats. I couldn't find any other good money-derived names that weren't taken on my server.
On my secondary (downtime) server I have a low-level tauren named Dineh, after the Navajo name for themselves, and a priest named Delphya in reference to the priestesses of Delphi.
My others are just names picked for sound or vaguely appropriate ethnic background.
Simandl Mar 6th 2012 5:48PM
I usually just take a word and translate it into another language. My dwarf paladin is named 'Strahlend' (radiant in german) ... my night elf druid is 'Melalindir' (singer of love in elvish) ...
several musical references as well -
Simandl (a standard name in classical double bass methodology)
Galliard (a type of dance popular during the renaissance I believe..)
Shinae Mar 6th 2012 11:22AM
Shinae, blood elf priest turned paladin, is the Drow word for "grace." I'm not actually interested in the Underdark stuff; I just did it to fit in with my first guildies.
Bimini (troll warrior) is a Caribbean island.
Tinirau (troll priest) is the Polynesian guardian of fish.
Krona (elder orc shamaness) is from "crone."
Limikka (tauren druid) is supposedly from the Cherokee word for shapeshifter.
Nerrivi (tauren/taunka hunter) is from Nerrivik (aka Sedna), the patron of fisherman and hunters in Inuit mythology.
Zipac (orc, now goblin warlock) is from Zipacna, a demon of Mayan mythology.
Saavik (draenei paladin) was a Vulcan character in Star Trek.
Bhuni (dwarf priest) is my Nordic-ization of "bunny." Yes, she has double-braids.
Defias Bandit Mar 6th 2012 11:55AM
Obvious answer is obvious.
xyna Mar 6th 2012 12:03PM
All my names start with K.
Twisted anime names or even just japanese names or invented names
pavlos75gr Mar 6th 2012 12:13PM
My toon is Hektelion, belf paladin. He has been the best geared one in EU -servers named this way for the past 5 years. I named him after Ecthelion from Tolkien's universe, elf, son of Turgon and captain of Gondolin.

Main: Human Warlock Dabura. (used to be Ðabura) got it from the villian Dabura in DBZ. funny story i fought a horde warlock name Kibito and easily beat him. if u know DBZ then u know why i had a small chuckle lol....
Alts:
Worgen Rogue Denzlo (used to be human). got the name from BASEketball after the old team owner of the Beers Ted Denslow lol....
Worgen Hunter Ced. used to be an orc hunter named Bharog, which is a minor alteration of Balrog from Street Fighter. I dont know where i got Ced, but i know there is a weapon called Ced's Carver in WoW, so maybe i got it from that lol....
Worgen Warrior Levine. got the name from Richard Levine from the book The Lost World.
whats up with me and worgen? lol....
Charron Mar 6th 2012 1:24PM
I couldn't do b1gb00tyh0 (my alias in FPS games of yore), so I looked to Greek mythology and the name Charon, the boatman who guides souls across the river Styx to Hades, for a toll (movie Troy, they put some coins with Hector's body? That's the toll). Fitting name for a warrior, who's toll he asks for is honor points. Charon was taken on my realm, so I added an R and Charron was born (since Vanilla).
My alts are mostly named after Mexican food. Empanada, my priest, was inspired on a late night post-bg food run. I alwas het comments in game "damn now I'm hungry!"
Aaron Mar 6th 2012 1:38PM
Most of my characters' names were chosen by repeatedly clicking the "Random Name" button, then slightly altering to taste. The two whose names I intentionally chose were:
* My paladin Sveta, which means "Light" in several Slavic languages, and
* My warlock Sampo, which is both a magical item from Finnish lore and an MST3K reference.
Jyotai Mar 6th 2012 2:28PM
My shaman transmuter, Paititi - is the name of a legendary city in the rainforests of Peru that Spaniards killed thousands of my people trying to find.
My tauren Kichwas, is named for the ethnic group my people and the Inca both come out of - as spelled Ecuador because the more common spelling was taken already.
My Paladin Nyabinghi is named for an African queen who went 'underground' with a band of special forces to resist foreign occupiers during the days of slavery.
My Druid Asante - an alternative spelling of Ashanti - the ethnic group from which many Africans were taken during slavery, and who formed the 'Maroons' - an independent nation with Jamaica during its colonial slavery period.
