BlizzPlanet makes a point that it could be cross-faction gameplay, given the two mounts are both spectral and one is Horde while the other is Alliance. While cross-faction gameplay is a long-requested feature, it's gotten a lot more attention lately with Real ID raiding.
Another point being made is that the mounts are new and that they could be new downloadable content or the return of the Recruit-A-Friend bonus.
Either way, quite interesting. We'll all have to keep our eyes out.

Sounds more like something for "Scroll of Resurrection" to me. But I'm probably wrong.

Yeah that was severely underlooked in the most recent patch, so I'd bet that they go this way.

This is totally aRAF or SOR reward.
I wish it was cross faction grouping or something but with Blizzard saying Mists is all about bringing war back to Warcraft I doubt they would then add cross faction anything.

Best theory I've heard is a reward for Scroll of Resurrection.
1) There's new SoR code in the game that implies they're doing something with it/making changes.
2) Resurrection? Really makes the "ghost" of old-school mounts make sense.
3) It says, "Soon we will fly together again." Again implies it happened before...in other words, bringing someone back. Not bringing in someone new like with RaF.

Maybe bringing Magni and Cairne back with an epic questlines, with the mounts as rewards? Ok, now that might be a little ambitious. The possibility is entertaining though :)

This does seem like the most feasable theory.
Now, if only a lot of countries weren't blocked fomr doing SoR and RaF.. :-/
(Which is odd, because I can refer friends to RIFT just fine..)

I think people came up with that because it's a picture of a person from each faction, and the word "together" was in the teaser sentence. Seems like a wishful-thinking induced stretch to me.

It's showing a Horde character and an Alliance one, and the caption talks about "fly(ing) together". I can kind of see how you could get cross-faction play from that.
That said, I don't think that's it. I think it's more likely a Scroll of Ressurection thing as others have said. Or maybe a level granting service (since only 60+ can fly).

Most likely it is what people mentioned above. Blizz is making new mounts for people that recruit or left the game. Another way blizz will sucker people back in. Pandas...sigh...

Evidently they overestimated the maintenance time, as servers are now up 2 hours ahead of projected time.

Was hoping for a new tier of mount collecting achievements. This would make a nice 125 or 150 mounts reward.
Scroll of Ressurrection makes more sense though.

The mounts are cool/unique enough to be a new tier of mount collecting IMO. Being that they are just a different coloring of our most basic game mounts though it makes total sense for them to be a freebie for scroll of resurrection.
