This is one of those deals that's great for the people eligible, but only serves to make me awfully jealous. Where's the free 80 for loyal customers?
3-06-2012 @ 8:28PM
I get so sick and tired of this selfish, self centered attitude of "Where's mine?" How about the anniversary pets and goodies they've given out for the past 3-4 years? Jesus, what do you people expect? With the slump in subscribers due to economy, disappointment with cata, or burnout, Blizzard should be focusing on getting people back. If it bothers you that much go play something else but stop with the endless greed.
3-06-2012 @ 8:42PM
I fully agree with Toup. It annoyed me that they gave out free game time to people who stopped paying. I have only been paying for 3+ years, so I can only imagine those who have been paying for 5-7+ years. This? This is a brick to the nuts. The loot package for those returning is stunning: *7 days gametime*free upgrade to cata*free server transfer*free faction transfer*bump up to lvl 80 complete with full set of 80 greenI'm sorry- if you think that is selfish to want something when people are going to walk into that- I don't know what to tell you. You are not an educated consumer then.

Maybe I'm out of line. If so, I apologize. I am being selfish, because the perks offered here are so super-cool and amazing, I want them myself, badly. But I can't get them, because I'm not eligible. That, no matter how much logic I try to throw at it, makes the "gimme" part of my personality stir wildly. Anniversary pets and "goodies" aren't quite the awesomeness of a free 80. I'd just adore that. I don't expect anything, but I'm still jealous. /shrug. I guess I'm childish? It reminds me of school, where the D students were given rewards for Bs, while adding another A or B to my collection was nothing to celebrate. And I wouldn't quit over this... that's silly. Please don't be so angry, I'm simply expressing what I think.

Touph has a very valid point:The perceived attitude of Blizzard is this:"Hey, I see you quit playing our game to go check out Star Wars. If you come back to us, here's a shiny new car!""Hey, I noticed you've been a loyal subscriber for the past 5 years, and have never cancelled your account, been banned, etc... We appreciate your loyalty and to show it, here's a bumper sticker every year!"**Looks at stack of bumper stickers... Looks at the guy next to me who quits every time a new MMO comes out, and has a nice shiny new car to show for it**"Uh, WTF...?"
3-06-2012 @ 9:02PM
You mean those anniversary pets we haven't seen since early Wrath?
3-06-2012 @ 9:14PM
Not really sure what you can't "get;" only the gifter receives the mount, not the returnee, so you could very well invite an old friend or something to come back. If you're complaining about not getting free levels, well that's just laziness on your part. Everyone knows it's not exactly hard to level these days (though I'll give you it gets boring doing it for the umpteenth time) so that's just a matter of setting your priorities; do I sit around in town all day or go level that alt? The free character transfer is nice I'll admit, but along with the Cata upgrade that's really just stuff that's only required in this specific context. I'm actually surprised about the free upgrade, but for what it's for (getting people back together) it serves its purpose amazingly well. Now if this were some "goodie bag" any new player could get just by picking up the game at Walmart or something, then you'd have a point, but I think this is really just all about the context and the target audience.

I'm sorry, but I'm with Touph on this one, and downvote me on this one if you want but in no way does:a free anniversary pet and/or a (useless) tabard for being a loyal subscriber for the past 6 or so years = a FREE mount + a FREE upgrade to Cataclysm + a FREE faction and server transfer + 80 FREE levels + 7 FREE days of play time.Let's do the math on this one:One mount: $25 (assuming you purchased it in the blizzard store)Cataclysm expansion: $40Free Faction Change + Server Transfer: $25 + $307 days of free play time: $15/4 = $3.75Total: $123.75At $15.00/month that comes out to 8.25 months worth of game time that someone get's for free. Plus that doesn't even include the $10 for a name change in the event that the server you transferred to already has a character on it with your name OR the price for WotLK in the event that the person receiving the scroll doesn't have it yet.I'm as much a fan of Blizzard as anyone and I love their games, but this just feels like a kick in the face for those of us who loyally pay our monthly fee.
3-06-2012 @ 9:35PM
It's not you specifically, but the attitude in general. What Blizz is offering to people returning is nothing compared to what they'll get back from monthly subscriptions. This isn't about rewarding them, it's about them regaining subscribers. I'm money in the bank to them. I've been a loyal player since '08 with only a month here or there where I let my sub lapse. I don't really care what they do to attract either new subscribers, or what they do to regain lost ones; doesn't affect my game playing one bit. People always have to complain about something though. It's like siblings, one gets shoes another gets a toy, and each wants what the other has (in addition to what they already have), and it's silly. I find it laughable and sad at the same time that people are trying to figure out a way to game the game.
3-06-2012 @ 9:38PM
Because the opportunity to get a Tyrael's Charger, and free DIII wasn't incentive enough for the ones that never quit? For paying for something I already am. Sure, I don't get a character leveled to 80.. but how many more of those do I really need? And as the 'never left', we're the ones that will get the spectral mount.I'd say it feels balanced to me. One gets stuff for paying for a month, the other gets me stuff for not doing anything differently that I am now.
3-06-2012 @ 9:40PM
@Scunosi,Yeah... I'm lazy. I'm not the best person in the world, I'll easily admit. I don't have a lot of time to play at all, sadly. A free 80 would spare me a lot of time... not that I don't love 1-60, but 60-80 is hard to complete on my schedule./shrug, I guess it's just a minor annoyance. It's something I'd really like, but it's not available to me because I didn't quit.
3-06-2012 @ 9:50PM
Maybe you can check with your friends to see if they have second accounts they would be willing to have resurrected? I know that any friend of mine who stopped playing isn't likely to come back for any of the offers, but my partner has an account I'll be resurrecting just for this mount, even though they won't play another 80+ character or care about getting free Cata etc.
3-06-2012 @ 10:44PM
If it's available here, I'm really tempted to rez my second account (inactive since BC) just for the updates and the mount. The values in Brazil are completely skewed:1 month of subscription: $8WotLK: $60Cataclysm: $60So, I would be getting a mount, plus $120 worth of updates, and the option to instant level one character to lv80 - for a measly $8.BTW, you can count on Blizzard to try to skew subscriber numbers the month the quarterly subscription numbers are tallied. June last year it was the unlimited trial, the free BC, and the complimentary copies of the Battle Chest sent to subscribers. The next quarter there was nothing - and it was the one where the player base shrank by 800k players. December it was the Annual Pass. Now, in March, we have a completely revamped and upgraded Scroll of Resurrection, with up to $70 worth of expansions given away - and players who take the offer and pay for a month will obviously be subscribed by March 31, when the subscriber numbers will be tallied.

I get the "regain" argument, but they should also worry about "retain". Especially in the dead-time between expansions, convincing people to stick around should be a focus. "If I hang around, I (might, if we're lucky) get a new Brewfest stein. If I quit, I can wait for bribes to come back."The "Prodigal Son" story didn't make sense to me back in Sunday School as an allegory, and even less so as a business move.
3-07-2012 @ 5:54AM
@andysdavis: I completely agree with your point, but your math is slightly off. The person coming back doesn't get the mount, the person who is still playing does. So it would be a $98.75 value for the person coming back, and a $25 value for the person who has been playing.
3-07-2012 @ 6:17AM
I used this for my friend last night. His account went down only a few days before the deadline. I'll get a mount out of it, but the real reason that I did it was for the free transfer. I do think it's only fair that you get similar rewards as the recruited. Theoretically, you can send this to someone and grant them a free copy of Cata as well as an auto-80... when you don't even have Wrath, so you don't have Cata OR an 80. I'm sorry, but if my friend had been on my server already, I probably wouldn't have sent him the Scroll. The person recieving it doesn't have to do anything. Give the sender an actual incentive otherwise people won't see why they should. Humans are selfish, greedy creatures. You need to account for that. Plus, the mounts really aren't that cool anyway (and for only one character which makes it less valuable than the cooler $25 account-wide mounts). It's sparkle pony texture on the flying mounts we've had since BC. Meh
3-07-2012 @ 8:18AM
Totally agree, this is a slap in the face to veteran players and loyal subscribers everywhere. I just recently started playing again to level up yet another toon and the boost would have saved me a lot of time. Was debating going back to trying Rift and/or TOR, but now I most certainly will. Blizzard frankly doesn't deserve my money anymore.
3-07-2012 @ 8:40AM
@raingod:Why is it that you only seem to post for the purpose of savagely criticizing something? Are you that angry?
3-07-2012 @ 10:52AM
i'm with Toup 100% on this.blizzard has created a two-tier membership setup which is a horrible way to handle loyal subscribers. insta-80 is an unbelievable perk. i can't think of a single person that i know in-game that doesn't have at least one alt that they'd love to boost to 80 right away. it seems like the only fair solution is to offer insta-80s to current subscribers as well.
3-07-2012 @ 3:18PM
I think you all are kind of looking at it the wrong way...What have you gotten for 5-7 years of loyal game play?- Friendships with those you've met in game- New content every few months which you got to enjoy to it's fullest while it was current- Countless "nerfs" erm, changes to hard to get achievements which grant unique mounts or pets.- Limited time only holiday pets which those who've quit will never gain access to. Ever.- An array of new features which didn't use to exist, such as LFR, better PVP queuing system, LFD..I could go on and on. The point is, that while some of these things are things blizzard -has- to do, to actively retain customers, some of these things are things blizzard has -chosen- to do, for it's current subscribers. To say we've got "nothing" in 5-7 years is ludicrous. All that being said, I am a tiny bit jealous I don't get my own free level 80 .. but the idea of getting to see some of my friends in game I haven't seen in forever since they quit playing .. and having an awesome new mount to ride around on, that I didn't pay a dime for in the blizzard pet store... sounds pretty awesome to me.I think that life when it comes right down to it, is what we make of it. We can choose to see the darkness, or celebrate the light. While it might make me a bit of a pollyanna to apply this thought process to a video game .. I find that as a whole I am a happier person, in game and outside it when I stop trying to feel like I am getting screwed all the time.
