Spiritual Guidance: 5 things I want for shadow priests in Mists of Pandaria

We're exactly one week away from the big Mists of Pandaria press event. What does it mean, exactly, that Blizzard is giving Team WoW Insider a major reveal? It means that we're getting closer and closer to that magical day the beta opens and, of course, the magic day that MoP hits store shelves and goes live to the public.
In the meantime, there's a lot of development going on behind the scenes. But what kind of priorities are the development team working under? What priorities should it have? What do you want out of your spec in Mists of Pandaria? And does your priority make the list?
1. Competitive DPS A lot of changes are coming to shadow priests in the next couple of months. We'll be getting more spells. Our existing spells will be getting makeovers. Change is scary, if only because we're sitting at such a great place right now.
Staying on top of the charts -- or, at least, staying competitive with the top of the charts -- may sound like a pretty basic request. After all, why would Blizzard consciously put shadow priests in a terrible place? But as any shadow priest historian could tell you, we haven't always been competitive. Our DPS output in Wrath (at least the first half of the expansion) was absolutely miserable. We've come a long way in Icecrown and all throughout Cataclysm.
When the dust clears, I think we'll do just fine here. Though I think Cataclysm will be the shadow priest's high water mark in terms of DPS, I'd be quite surprised if we came even close to the dark days of Wrath. It's hard to be too upset with that.
2. Multi-DoT opportunities As we have been discussing the last few weeks, Blizzard has been aggressively trying to nerf the shadow priest's multi-DoT superiority. It's understandable -- we do phenomenal DPS when there's more than one target available to be saddled with Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain. Too phenomenal, admittedly.
But truly, it's those multi-DoT opportunities that make shadow priesting fun. We like the ability to skip from one target to the next, making cost-benefit analyses on the fly. Is it better to nuke the target marked with skull for 22.5k DPS, or do 30k DPS across all three targets available? The answer to that question isn't always easy and often depends not just on your opponents, but also on your teammates.
Sure, there's some skill required in maximizing your DPS on a single target. But there's something magical about taking that to the next level through multi-DoTing. It's a huge challenge that takes years to master, but once you do master the skill, there's no better videogaming high. And perhaps it's exactly that level of difficulty that puts the practice on the endangered list.
3. Moar DoTs! (Or at least the same number!) If Blizzard thinks DoTs are overpowered, that's understandable. But if it's actively taking DoTs out of the game because it fears their power ... well, that's just the wrong road to take us all down.
Personally, I feel that DoTs are what make shadow priests fun. Like I said, I get that the game developers don't want shadow priests consistently topping the charts, but there's a happy medium to be had. You don't have to cut out entire spells to reduce the shadow priest's DPS, nor their ability to multi-DoT.
If the end result of Mists of Pandaria pushes shadow priests away from being a DoT spec and toward being a direct damage spec, I'm going to be a sad (shadow) panda. Direct damage just isn't what shadow priests are about; it's not what we all love about the class.
There's bad news on this front -- we look likely to lose Devouring Plague in MoP. Sure, a game with fewer DoTs would be simpler to play. But if you want to make the game simpler, take away the complex tedium, not the fun complexity. And for the love of all things shadowy, nerf our DoTs if you really must, Blizzard, but spare us our Devouring Plague.
4. PvP prowess and survivability If you're a regular reader of Spiritual Guidance, you already I'm not a huge PvP afficionado. I've got a pretty basic level of PvP knowledge (which I shared in my basics of shadow priest PvP article). I prefer to settle my differences with others on Judge Judy, not the battlefield.
But still, though I'm not huge into PvP, I understand that PvP is a huge part of the shadow priesting lifestyle. Between our DPS and our healing, we've got a huge amount of utility.
Here's the problem, though: Blizzard is taking away our healing, just like it's taking away the healing ability of all the other DPS hybrids. Boomkins are being stripped of most their heals. So are elemental shaman and ret paladins.
Don't get me wrong, we're keeping some of our heals -- mainly, Flash Heal. It's a great part of our emergency toolkit, but it's hardly the best of our emergency toolkit. We're losing Renew, which is a great on-the-go instant-cast before switching back to shadow. We're losing Divine Hymn, which has saved my party's butt a number of times in both PvP and PvE.
All of it makes leaving shadowform to do anything seem entirely futile. And really, isn't that why we're supposed to want to play hybrid DPS characters? Because we can do more?
5. Shadowy cohorts! One of my favorite parts about Cataclysm -- and it was definitely on my 2010 wish list for the expansion -- was the increased prevalence of our Shadowfiend. One part of this is the Sin and Punishment talent, which slashes 5 seconds off the Shadowfiend timer for each Mind Flay crit. Veiled Shadows cuts the timer by 60 seconds at rank 2. And while we were lucky to have it, the tier 12 shadow bonus took yet another 75 seconds off our Shadowfiend timer, down to a spectacularly frequent 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
Unfortunately, though, that's all going away with Mists of Pandaria. No more Sin and Punishment. No more Veiled Shadows. And our tier 12 bonus -- long gone. We're back up to a 5-minute default timer, and that makes me terribly sad.
Shadow priesting is more fun when you're doing it with a friend. And while I absolutely love the fact that Blizzard is giving us a new friend in the Psyfiend, I'm going to miss seeing my Shadowfiend as often as I do now. Perhaps it's time to start up the Save our Shadowfiend Foundation?

I don't want a longer CD on my shadowfiend. :( No!!!!
I hope we still do competitive DPS. I don't have a legendary, so needless to say I'm not topping the charts, unlike some shadow priests. I don't even have 4-piece T13. (I've had absolutely lousy luck on the rolls.) I'm still using a ivl 378 trinket. Like I said, my luck is horrid. But I still do "good" DPS, even if the better-geared DK and warlock in our guild beat me on the charts.
I don't know why Blizzard is so concerned about multi-dotting. We actually have to manually target each mob to put a DoT on it. Whereas DKs don't even have to do that much to spread their diseases. So why the double standard? Or are they being nerfed/changed in MoP too? (I'll admit I haven't been following the changes to DKs for MoP.)
I'm sad that we are losing a lot of healing ability. I can't tell you the number of times I've saved a wipe by popping out of shadow form and switching to healing. It's too bad Blizzard doesn't want me to do that anymore. It makes me a very sad priest. :(

- "I don't know why Blizzard is so concerned about multi-dotting."
Its about player perception. Multi-dotting is one of those things that, when it's good, is really, really good. When those situations arise, guilds start sitting their shamans, mages and hunters for SPriests, boomkins and warlocks because they see "ZOMG (x class) is AMAZING! We need to get like 4 more! Hey DK, you're sitting next week unless you want to play your warlock alt from now on."

I'd love to see MORE shadows. Cataclysm gave us our shadow clones and a more common shadowfiend; I'd love to see more things like that. It's a fun distinction from the Warlock we're so frequently compared to.

Please correct me if I am wrong here, but don't DK diseases tick for paltry damage compared to shadow priest DOTs? I thought it was the strike-increasing effect of the diseases that really ramped up DK DPS.
Boobah Mar 8th 2012 12:20PM
@Greg: Depends on which spec your DK is. Blood diseases are important because they debuff the target; frost diseases buff your biggest single-target strike; but for unholy spreading your diseases is actually how you AoE.
On the other hand, no DK spec can keep both diseases up on two different targets sixty yards apart; when they DoT up a pile it's similar in effect to a shadow priest Mind Searing it, unless it's a truly huge stack, like Onyxia's whelps.
And DK diseases don't scale with haste which helps keep their disease damage under control.

Now that I suddenly have a level 80 Priest, I have to read Fox!

Is it just me or is the psyfiend seem TERRIBLY overpowered.
A whole minute worth of fear? O_O
luskaner Mar 7th 2012 8:56PM
it probably only applies to pve (finally an effective CC), in pvp it's probably limited to 10sec or so
Revynn Mar 7th 2012 9:10PM
PVP CC's are limited to 8 seconds, and you'd hit hard enough DR's that the 3rd or 4th fear may as well not even be cast at all.
Even in a PvE situation, something like that can be more trouble than it's worth unless it gets a Glyph of Fear treatment.
luskaner Mar 7th 2012 9:22PM
yes, probably they will make a glyph anyway it was fun in BC when you had to pull in the previous room to do so xD

What I'd like is not the RNG pain of waiting and waiting for the first couple of orbs on a boss fight to cast MB and get a good empowered shadows proc rolling. That mechanic has been super frustrating since orbs were introduced. Glad that the rumor is that it's going awayyyy.

Agree agree agree!! Couldn't have said it better myself!! I'm also worried that they are moving toward the direct damage direction and hope that there is still a chance to retain what we love about the class. If anything, we need more dots, not less.
I also love the 'shadowy cohorts'.. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has always cackled a little bit over shadowfiend. Coolest pet in the game in my opinion. I will proudly donate to the Save the Shadowfiend Foundation.
Also, thumbs up to the positive outlook on staying competitive this expansion. I'm still recovering from my pre-wrath PTSD.

I haven't played a shadow priest for almost 2 years (just before Icecrown), as I went Holy for raiding and didn't look back - but I have to say this is a really good article! There are some great quality of life changes mentioned, and the shadow fiend really ups the fun factor for me as well. I whole-heartedly agree with all 5 of these proposals and would actually put my shadow robes back on if they held up some of the core essence of the shadow spec with DoTs and multi-DoTs yet didn't strip out the hybrid abilities. Nicely done, Van Allen.

Leeeeeroy Jenkins on The Daily Show! It just happened! I saw it!!!

With the removal of DP we would also lose our selfhealing ability... is there a compensation in sight?

PVP Shadow is forever the damned spec
Back in vanilla -> cataclysm, we had our talent tree. We weren't so bad - if you were shadow, you specced into the shadow tree - you got all the shadow stuff you needed.
A frost mage in that time would spec into their frost tree - but they would still get utility from their other DPS specs, such as blink and counterspell from arcane, or impact from fire.
Shadow doesn't have THAT, resulting in a lack of utility, because it's part of the only class in the game with TWO healing specs, as opposed to or 1. We simply have less utility because our class has always been focused as healing - shadow is that awkward component.
This difference is being made even bigger in MOP, where you can now freely pick between the three different specs, taking whats best for your role.
A warlock can take the BEST out of the 3, making for a deadly combo
A mage can take the BEST out of the 3, allowing for diverse and insane synchronization of talents
A rogue can take the BEST out of the 3, letting him create different play styles depending on how he feels
A priest has only one option. Am I going to take vow of unity? Perhaps divine star instead over archangel or maybe ill move faster while i'm not being attacked so I can be trained by melee..
We will forever lack utility.
Killik Mar 8th 2012 8:26AM
That sounds like a case of 'the grass is greener' - it's not like other classes don't have talent tiers where the choices are between movement effects. And it's definitely not true that each tier has only one shadow-relevant choice.

A reliable CC like sheep, trap, banish, hex.... that works on humanoids/beasts
Shadow Priests are one of the few classes that cant do it, and that can hurt us in pugs and lfg/lfr.
Also I would like to see a larger arsenal of spells maybe including knockbacks, novas, traps. roots. With so many holy spells being removed from us, I would like to see more shadow spells to take their place.
Shadowmend, nearly every shadow priest npc has this little beauty of a spell, I would like to see a channelled healing spell on shadow priests... not strong like a healing priest, but more utility like where it takes full channelling to get even a moderate healing rate.
Most importantly, I would like to see a Shadow Priest "Stealth".... we are more shadowy that rogues and nightelfs, but we do not have the ability to blend into shadows and vanish from sight is pathetic.
shatnerstorm2 Mar 8th 2012 9:11AM
I'm actually optimistic about off-healing for shadow priests in MoP. Sure, we'll be losing most of our healing spells...but right now they all hit like a wet noodle if you're not disc or holy anyways. Blizzard is talking about wanting to bring the hybrid feeling back in MoP, so maybe Flash Heal will actually do something for shadow, rather than now where you have to spam a bunch of them in a row to do almost the same healing that a rogue does passively with Recuperate (and unlike rogues, you can be interrupted when you're doing that). Whether they'll fix our mobility DPS issues and crowd control options...well, we'll see.
I won't speak on the PvE rotation as I mainly PvE as a healer, save the occasional LFR run where I fool around as shadow.
Matthew Mar 8th 2012 2:47PM
I don't like that offhealing is now destined to be nerfed even more. If I wanted to play a class that could only dps, I would (and do!). I like being able to do minimal healing, and trust me, a shadow priest healing only saves you for a little bit. (Divine Hymn not withstanding).
I wonder if they did this to make shadow priest feel different from an afflicloc.
What would Tyler Say?
