Breakfast Topic: Been waiting an excrutiatingly long time for this

This week, I wandered into Karazhan and fought my way through the trash, marveling at the sheer number of green items that dropped -- even a Ritssyn's Lost Pendant for my troubles. I started to get my hopes up, thinking that this could totally be the run that I'd see the silly pony drop. Unfortunately, I messed up -- I killed Midnight before Attumen could hop on his back and start phase 2. I vanished, hoping that would reset things, but I was left with a dead horse and no loot. However, I still wasn't saved to the boss, so I ducked out of the instance, did a quick reset, and dove back in again with fully respawned trash. This time, I waited for Attumen to hop up on Midnight, but I was kicking myself because I was certain that if I hadn't messed up the green-filled run, I'd be riding around on a horse. That was totally the winning run that I screwed up.
Except, apparently, it wasn't. All it took was a reset, and approximately four years after I started randomly farming this stupid pony, he dropped. Now he's mount #143 in my collection. At first, I was filled with a huge sense of relief, and then it was replaced by a sort of empty feeling. After all, the solo trip to Karazhan was a weekly routine that I could count on. I got used to doing it. So ... what now? I have absolutely no idea.
What's the longest you've spent farming a single item? Is there one elusive pet, mount, or other goodie in WoW that still escapes your grasp? What do you do when that long sought-after goal is finally attained? And while we're at it ... what the heck should I farm now?

#143 - A labor of love... back in the old days of people using pagers, 143 was code for "I love you" At least around here. The number corresponded to amount of letters in each word of I love you.

i remember that.

I'm jealous.
I *was* farming the green proto drake from the egg...for 2 years, every week (when it was a 7 day cooldown) I faithfully came back, bought another egg, almost to the minute of the other one "hatching."
I gave up. I'm hoping that one day my tanking satchel will have one, but I've learned not to hold my breath.

Never give up hope. I had gotten to the point where I only sporadically picked up a mysterious egg, and the last one I got I forgot it was even in my bags for days after it hatched. Then, the morning of my birthday, I found the cracked egg in my bag, opened it, and discovered a Green Proto-Drake mount waiting for me.
If you need some extra reason to keep getting the egg, the pets inside can sell for a decent amount these days. The proto-drake hatchling goes for something like 500 gold on my realm.

I too spent well over a year (when the egg had a 7 day hatch time) buying those darn eggs from the Oracles, hoping for the green proto drake and being disappointed time and time again. My husband got his on his warrior main in a couple months, and then had the nerve to get one on his priest alt as well, while I tried in vain. I was so elated when I finally got the drake, but at the same time I felt lost! What to do now?
Grinding the Molten Front to get my Flameward Hyppogryph was just a tedious bore.
Then camping Deepholm for Aeonaxx almost made me start biting my fingernails again. But I think that one was the most rewarding... showing off the Phosphorescent Stone Drake to my very obviously jealous guildies was the best!
Gratz on the Fiery Warhorse! Hmmm, maybe I will have to start soloing Kara....

You should start farming it again. The droprate on it was DRASTICALLY increased.

I called that the egg of disappointment, well actually I heard a guildie call it that and I liked it therefore it became a running joke. I had the green proto on my, now "JC spec, working out of her shop in Org" Paladin, after just 3 eggs.. I wanted it for my priest, my main, the one I've been achievement-whoring since she's capable of doing far more things than any toon that came before her. I forget how long I kept going out to buy an egg, even with the 3 day timer, and selling tickbird after tickbird, cobras and proto-pets.. I finally got the drake last week. And its soo weird to not go visit the Oracles for an egg of disappointment.

I hated every stupid satchel... it only gave me gems or potions... and my friend would get all mounts everytime... even repeated ones!
Hob Mar 8th 2012 2:37PM
Yeah, it was around 18 months or so before the green proto-drake dropped. I'm still buying eggs though, because people still buy hatchlings and cobras, and on the off-chance that another mount drops, it's going in the bank for the day that soulbound mounts become tradeable.
/grumbles about deleting an army of Sinsiter Squashlings on multiple toons

Same here, it was a verrrry looooong and frustrating wait, but it did finally hatch, so I was really grateful that I didn't give up .

Very jealous. I'm starting to wonder how long Blizzard makes good on account bound mounts, making it possible to increase your chances of getting rare drop mounts in the same time period. I think I might cry if I got something like that on one of my alts instead of my main (that still has < 100 mounts).
Chetti Mar 8th 2012 10:54AM
That has got to be the worst thing ever, being so totally over the moon about winning/getting a cool/rare mount and then it hitting you that its on the *wrong* toon. I haven't have that happen myself, unless you can count that it took very much less time for my shelved pally to get the green proto than it took my priest. But it did happen to a friend of mine. We were leveling toons on a server that wasn't our "main" server. We'd started alts there when our server was down, she made another mage, and I made the priest that has become my main. While we were leveling (through dungeon finder), doing lich king heroics, the blue proto dropped and she won the roll. The best part of that night wasn't that she won the roll (well, that was awesome) - but it was the EPIC hissy fit that our tank threw because he didn't win. He cursed his head off all CAPSLOCKY till the end (well till we kicked him for doing more typing than tanking). At the time, she played that mage a lot, though her main mage was on another server. In time though, the main got played more and she was soo mad that her super cool blue proto was not only on another TOON, but on another server. In time tho, I transferred back to the main server and eventually she brought that mage too.. but the blue proto still collects dust.

Congrats on that.
I've been trying to get the Blue Proto-Drake from Heroic UP for a pretty long time now. The Green Proto-Drake from the Oracle's egg took from the beginning to Wrath to mid T11, so I guess that was the longest I spent waiting for a mount to drop.
Riptor820 Mar 8th 2012 8:24AM
I guess I'll add that pretty much every mount that I don't have yet has escaped my grasp.
When I finally get that sought-after drop, I go for the next one, obviously. :)
Go farm the newer Cata mounts from VP and Stonecore, IMO.
Noyou Mar 8th 2012 8:58AM
Congrats Anne! I too am seeking the blue proto drake for my mage. Good luck to us!
Lizenz Mar 8th 2012 10:57AM
There is an alliance-only mount that when you faction change does not translate to any of the horde mounts so instead they give you a completely random mount.
Mine was a blue proto-drake :). Until I opened a pack of WoW Trading Cards the other month it was my first and only dragon mount too!

I have, in the past, farmed and hoped for some items for some time, but eventually gave up on each one of them because I got distracted or simply changed my priorities, then forget about those farming-runs.
Among them were the Kara-mount (no idea how often I have killed that boss by now), the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, certain pieces of old armour (still dont have a full t2-pally set *blush*)...
Maybe now that you have the Kara-mount, you wanna try to go for an old legendary, or try to get some friends involved and try to get Invincible, which is one mount Id really love to have, and I think you can still get it...
cromahr Mar 8th 2012 9:06AM
...and after thinking about this for a bit, I guess it's "fess up time"... sometimes, I *might* be a little superstitious regarding "roll luck"... where I think "Oh man, I just won a roll on that boss drop, guess I won't get another win in this run then, luck is all used up".
So maybe that subconsciously keeps me from "wasting my luck" on mounts or pets.
Totally silly, I know *blush*

Definitely an exploit. Blizzard will temp-ban you and take away your vampire horse :P
