The Sisters: Getting Even is the new machinima by WazopVids. The plot seems straightforward. One sister is stuck in a cage by the dastardly Horde. The other sister shows up on the boat, kills a whole bunch of orcs, and successfully stages a rescue. A lot of backstory is implied, but I like the simple version.
What's interesting about The Sisters: Getting Even is its impressive animation. Sure, it's a little stiff at times, and the fights don't all seem to flow quite right. But you can clearly see Wazop learning his trade and putting the characters into unique motion. I think of this video as a teaser, and I get very excited about what could be coming next. "[...] its impressive animation. Sure, it's a little stiff at times, and the fights don't all seem to flow quite right."
...and considering that it's all about combat and animation which makes it all the time.
I think it could be solved by using more and faster cuts to blend the bad animations, more close-up shots instead of full body shots and a bit of blur to soften the edges.
Rewatched it a few times and here are a couple of things how it could be improved:
When zooming into the ship: don't just zoom through the ship. Zoom into the guards face(s) and into the night elf. Climbing the ship: she sits there as if she's taking a dump while taking out her blade. Just cut that part and proceed with the one where she slips down. That one was fantastic. The guard getting up the ladder: the first anlge is cool but the second is too long and the walking animation is bad. Rather skip that or use the viewpoint of her hanging above him. The shuriken scene: it's 10 seconds. Half of that is them flying through the air. Cut that down, maybe just a splitt second where they flash in the sunlight. The orc falling into the blade: at first it's unclear that she knocks him off his feet. It's all brown and the is no focus on the feet. After that the animations isn't good. Just more focus on the feet and after that the part where she rolls the dead orc off of her. I can imagine how he ended up there with a blade through his body. Next room: she charging with both blades above her head looks weird and doesn't look dynamic. I liked the kick but she has the blades above her head again. The other orc falling in slow motion doesn't look better. Maybe rather pin him to a wall? Grenade scene: the orc in the middle has stiff legs. I think zoom on the grenade on the floor and then in the faces could do the trick. Bladestorming orc: the beginning of the whirl doesn't look good and after she threw the shurikens he is frozen and looks like "Meh, are you kidding me?". I think the whirl you be more wild where he gets in rage and charges her while whirling and she just dodges and he spinns out of the window. The last fight: aren't the supposed to be the hardest/strongest? They act like they were the dumbest and slowest. It lacks an epic ending. The fight should be longer and more challenging for her instead of just sliding past and then stabbing them. In addition their death animation isn't good, too. It's just them falling on the floor.
Not sure, it's cool he made all the custom animations and I don't know if he used his own rig or how good WoW's is but this doesn't look finished to me at all. to me it seems allmost all animation need more work to round them, blend them into each other and also to get the speed right and physics believable. I just can't buy that orc being kicked through the side of the ship or the grenade flying and bouncing with the same speed all the way and that orc that gets a blade in his chest simply flies too far. I also hate the constant stopping of movement, arm goes from A to B at a constant speed without slowing out or into a hold position. it makes the characters look like robots
simply put, nice effort, but needs a lot more work to look good imo. sorry I'm that negative but I think this could have been done a lot better
I thought this was really good.Bravo.Though when I saw it was about the sisters getting even I had hopes of a long awaited fight between Alleria and Sylvanas!
Definitely has a lot of potential. His animations are just a litttttle too stiff, and he needs to learn how to make them more natural, but this is way, way better than what a lot of people put out, so kudos!
I think the biggest eye sore moment is that it sticks WAY too long on those shurikens. I mean you get bored after a bit. And then you wonder why the other orcs fell dead, was it the shurikens? You don't really know since you only saw them thrown at that one.
Besides that most orcs I know die that easily so it's fairly accurate :P
This guy could use some animation classes. This movie would have been awesome if he'd made full use of the 12 basic principles of animation (especially slow in, slow out) and varied up the camera angles a little more. My teacher was talking about this actually, about how it's easier to animate in 3D than 2D, but at the same time it's easy to forget about the basic principles in 3D because you can say "move this from here to here" without any anticipation or slow in, slow out.
Still I'm quite impressed with the amount of work it must have taken to get it this far. Feels like with a little more polish it could be great, instead of just good.
I saved this off YouTube and took it into Premiere, then sped it up 350% (making the video about one minute), and it makes it almost watchable. Despite the animations being stiff, it's not terrible for student work. Mostly, it's a timing issue--something students aren't easily taught and doesn't make it's way into a lot of accelerated college curriculums.
It took me years to fully understand secondary animation and timing. Hopefully, this person will start to see those developments in their own projects soon. You know what they say about practice!
