WRUP: A star-studded event featuring Power Ranger David Yost
Well, it's time to write WRUP again. Really, it's one of the most stressful days of the week. I only get one chance to share a miscellaneous video dredged up from the bowels of the internet, and if it's not good, I run hundreds of thousands of weekends.* So which to choose? Rapping Joan Rivers? Welcome to Paducah? Or something risqué that will no doubt get me fired from having to do WRUP, ending the living nightmare once and for all?
(*Estimated page views may not match actual WRUP readership.)
Oh, by the way, if you're a fan of the video I share each week on WRUP, you should go visit my friends at Everything is Terrible. They're curators of the awful, responsible for about 80% of the videos I use here for WRUP. And they're coming to a town near you to air their newest video. If you've never been to an Everything is Terrible show, you haven't lived. Seriously. Do it.
In the meantime, it's the weekend, and that means it's time to WRUP. What are you doing this weekend?
Alex Ziebart (@AlexZiebart) Mass Effect 3. I will not rest until the galaxy has been saved. Oh, and I'll be working on more Neva Cora. Probably. If the Reapers don't interrupt me.
Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) I think I might catch up on some Skyrim this weekend, it's been awhile since I've had a chance to play. Raiding on Sunday, and ... that's about it for the weekend really!
Chase Hasbrouck (@alarondruid) ME THREE (this would have been funnier if I were actually the third person to reply). Mass Effect and WoW are the only two series that are worth buying release day to me, IMO.
Dan Desmond (@antigen_) You guessed it: Mass Effect 3. I could pretend that I'm going to look at another game, whether that's SWTOR or WoW, or even think about buying Assassin's Creed: Revelations, but I really can't see myself playing anything other than ME3.
Daniel Whitcomb (@DanielWhitcomb) Mass Effect 3. Single player, multiplayer, whatever. I'm gonna take down some Reapers for Emily Wong.
Dawn Moore (@dawnwow) Probably little to no games this weekend. I want to write and practice riding my motorcycle. I really need to come up with a name for her. She's so small that I was thinking some reference to a tiny and adorable game character. Like Teemo from LoL. But I want her to be a girl so all I could think of was Navi, but that implies she's a bit annoying. Any ideas?
Elizabeth Wachowski (@leeatwaterlives) Mass Effect 3. I was finally able to give my Shepard the purple hair she so deserves!
Fox Van Allen (@foxvanallen) (gplus.to/foxvanallen) Instead of playing video games, I'll be going to see their scores played in concert instead. Murmurs and I are going to Distant Worlds at Symphony Hall here in Boston, and it's going to be awesome.
Joe Perez (@lodurjz) I'm still not playing ME3, as much as I really want to. I'll be playing LoL, WoW, and doing some writing. Oh, and Mario Kart on the 3DS because, well, it's Mario Kart!
Josh Myers (@PostColloquial) I am not playing Mass Effect 3. Sadface.
Kelly Aarons (@Cadistra) I'm actually going to be doing a livestream of me playing the free, Unity-based horror game "SCP-087" on Saturday night! Come on by and watch a grown woman break down into a gibbering mess of tears and cursing! Aside from that, I'm really hoping to get some WoW and Devil Survivor 2 in. I managed to convince a coworker of mine to use the new Scroll of Resurrection, so now he's got a goblin on my server. Bonus question: Vatican cameos!
Mathew McCurley (@gomatgo) See Alex and Matticus and anyone else who said Mass Effect 3. Also some League of Legends and some World of Warcraft. I am introducing someone new to the game.
Matt "Matticus" Low (@matticus) Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 3.
Matt Walsh (@Rhidach) It will be a miracle this weekend if I manage to remember to feed myself, with all the Mass Effect 3 I'll be playing.
Megan O'Neill (@slowpoker) I will be playing the "Procrastinate Spring Cleaning As Much As Possible" game, which involves writing things, gearing up my troll priest, and farming the ICC 5-mans for my druid's transmog gear.
Michael Gray (@writegray) I'm having a home-chore weekend. Time to make a new round of beef jerky, dry some fruits and veggies for snacks, and we're brewing an exciting new chocolate stout recipe. Also taking measurements for a bedroom remodel to make room for the Shieldling. With all that out of the way, will be soliciting beta reads for my book. Just saying.
Olivia Grace (@oliviadgrace) I think I might be the only person who's not playing Mass Effect 3. I'll be playing ... wait for it ... wait for it ... yep, that's right, WoW again. Just for a change! I think I'll be resurrecting a "friend's" account and giving myself -- er, I mean, my friend who is also called Olivia ... a level 80 mage. As Fox didn't give us a bonus again, I reckon we should play Mornington Crescent. I'll start. Ladbroke Grove. Yeah, I went there.

Pyro (@... well I don't have a twitter.) SSX. Love me some snowboarding, whether in real life or on my PS3. Being able to compete online is a new and invigorating experience It's also been a while since I played a round of golf, so I'll be hitting the links too. No fire performance this weekend, all my friends are on a boat while I'm keeping my feet grounded on land.
Magma Mar 9th 2012 8:15PM
It would seem Matt is playing the same game I am.

Wedding (not mine, though I wish they were) prep.
Which means procrastinating with Minecraft. I got a mod pack that allows one to make magic and technology, so I plan to ruin an entire planet with one continuous industrial revolution powered by perpetual alchemical explosions.

I will be playing the "I must study for exams" game this weekend. I'm in the first year of a Masters program, which means lots of courses, which means exams. Fun, fun, fun! Also, working on papers/projects for these same courses.

My weekend is going to consist of playing Swtor, my best friend politely suggested we level toons together, much like when she introduced to me to WoW. I haven't decided between an Imperial Sniper (I like shooting things in the face from afar) or a Bounty Hunter (Shooting things in the face while punching them in the abdomen).
Before that I have to work tomorrow (My job requires me to work 1 Saturday each month, unless I get stuck working 2 or 3 in a month... /rage rising), then get a new bulb for my car's taillight along with getting a whole new taillight cover to replace the 1 that was damaged..
And... I've caught the writing bug, I'm pondering the idea of making a Pandaren monk blog for when a "ahem" certain forthcoming expansion's beta is going to start. We'll see what happens when that press release thing NDA ends.

Murmurs and Foxy should round out their weekend culturally by attending one of the final performances of Wild Swans at the ART in Harvard Square. I'm sure by mentioning my name they could score free* tickets.
*"Free" denotes tickets that cost $0 plus or minus $65.

Saw the Everything is Terrible show in Houston this week, it was great!

I feel like the only person who was unimpressed by ME3 =/
Pyromelter Mar 10th 2012 5:18AM
I don't really understand the hype behind mass effect. Is it a good game? I think so. Is it up there with the all-time best ever? No way, not in my opinion. The ME series feels to me like a refinement of a genre (first person shooters with a good story).
I much prefer both the gameplay as well as the story of Half Life 2.
So I wouldn't say I was "unimpressed" but I do sort of shake my head reviewers that give ME games in the 9.5 range, to me there's only been a few games that reach that stratosphere. Half-Life 2, FF7, FF Tactics, Starcraft 2, Mario RPG, Super Mario Bros. 3, Kingdom Hearts (imo the most underrated game series ever), SSX Tricky, World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto 3, Warcraft 3. There's probably a few I'm missing or I'm not familiar with, but I don't put the Mass Effect games in the same breath as the ones I mentioned. I'd put it a tier below, with maybe a game like Fable, Disgaea, FF8, 9, and 12 (sorry i thought 10 sucked), Max Payne, Fallout 1, Magicka... I could list about a thousand games that I'd put in the 8-9/10 category, including almost every Madden game as well as many other sports and action sports games.
The Mass Effect series is in that second tier. Great production values, refined gameplay, a good enough story with at least somewhat compelling characters and choices. Not the epic, be-all, end-all that you get while playing as Gordon Freeman or exacting revenge on Sephiroth for killing Aeris.
Then again I have no idea why people play COD and similar games so I admit my bias is skewed. But I'd rather play Portal or any Half-life 2 episode than Mass Effect.

@Pyro
WoW is literally the only thing I'd give higher marks to. Imo Mass Effect is better than literally everything else you listed. It's saddening that hating bioware has become the new fad. Despite the flaws of ME3, it is still a better game that 90% of the ones out there.

I was in line at midnight for ME3. I was psyched. I loved every minute of it right up until the end of the game...when it all unraveled and crushed my soul.
:(
ChaosPrime Mar 10th 2012 2:25AM
So I wasn't the only one that found it highly depressing? :(
Randomize Mar 10th 2012 6:06AM
Me for almost the entire game: "This is great! Combat much smoother than before, characters are better developed. HOLY #%#@ AM I FIGHTING A REAPER WITH A [REDACTED]?"
Me at the end of the game: "WTF IS THIS?" The final cutscene was just bizarre. Replayed it with all three choices available to me, all sucked imo. It was all so confusing. I just can't believe
ME3 was really the best game I've played in awhile if I don't count the ending. Just don't get me started on the green eyes.
Aldarion Mar 12th 2012 2:31PM
99% of the game was perfectly fine, enjoyable and highly entertaining.
Have my roommates not been there, I'd have even shed a few tears at points (Miranda's and Legion's death being the most memorable).
But the endings... Gosh, I can't put them anywhere, really. After all the efforts they put into this game, surely they'd have succeeded in inventing something... More appropriate.
It's not that they don't make sense... But there's no feeling of accomplishment. I missed the catharsis. They absolutely should have made an ending where Shepard survives.
The emotional investment doesn't pay off. It's unsatisfying.

@pyro ...... You didn't like ff10 *sigh but you liked 9(really :-S) and 12. IMO 12 is when the series nose dived I really wanted to like 13 but stopped at around 30 hours :-(, you sir disappoint :-P. Back to the topic heh im working 12 hours both days and maybe when I get home I'll watch some of the walking dead series.
ravyncat Mar 10th 2012 6:58PM
This weekend I am busy being a kitty nurse. No gaming for me.
But my poor cat is finally getting better so it is all good. ^^;

I'm leveling tailoring by cutting out and sewing a RL prom dress.
Abadon Mar 11th 2012 7:10AM
@Dawn Moore:
It's not as tiny and cute, but wouldn't Epona be a good name? I mean, you get to sing Epona's Song every time you start the engine and then ride like the win!
Otherwise, Zergling. Or Speedling. And yes, they are cute.
