"Every female
WoW player has healed at least once." This, dear reader, is something I was told in-game the other day. As a dedicated anthropologist, I balk at sweeping generalizations such as these -- such things are almost never true. And the person who said this didn't mean "used a healing ability" -- he meant "played as a dedicated healer."
Once I called him on his generalization, there was more back-pedaling than in the Tour De France. Of course he knows that not every female player has played a healer. Female players who have only played for a few weeks and chose a pure DPS class, he allowed, wouldn't have!
But of course, there is a stereotype in
WoW that women heal. We've talked about it before, but it makes me wonder two things:
-
Do most women have a healing character?
-
If there's any truth in the stereotype (which I think there might be), why does healing appeal so much to women?
I have a theory, just a theory, if you'll allow me. I reckon it might be more that men stick to DPS and tanking, whereas women are happy to try healing. And once they start healing, they find that it's one of the more varied and interesting roles to play. Especially in PvE, where you learn fights by repeating the same actions over and over, healing is the one role that has the variety. So women stay healing once they start. But, like I said, it's just a theory.

Female here. Currently I have 85's - a rogue, a paladin tank, a hunter and a mage. I have always *intended* to level a healer, but they always fall to the wayside. My druid tanks, my shaman quickly went enhancement, and my priest has been sitting at level 20 longer than my hunter and mage have existed. I just like smackin' and/or blastin' things in the face.
So no. Girls don't always heal.

As a female, I have a level 85 Resto druid and had a holy paly I played until level 55 (Haven't played her since Cata was released).
Most of the other females I know, have played priest, druid, shammy or paly, altough most of them play hunters (myself included)

I haven't met many women in game - or perhaps I have and they hid it, which i can understand.
I can say my girlfriend is an altoholic and mostly dps'es and sometimes she heals. The only time she tanked was with her shaman of all things at lunar festival, because we wanted to down omen and I wasn't nearly high enough level.
Personally I think this view might have something to do with the way healers in traditional RPG's and such are displayed. I can't think of a single final fantasy game where the "white mage" wasn't a woman. On TV shows and in movies it's usually the woman who tends to the wounded group mates and such, and usually that woman is the heart of the group too. Now tell me the healer in our 5 man dungeon runs isn't the heart of the group :)

As a female, in my experience the majority of healers I know or have met in wow are guys. All our guild healers are male as well. Since TBC I can think of 2 women players I have raided with that have healed ... and one of our main tanks whilst raiding ICC 25man was a woman.
For the record I have never healed, I have a low lvl priest that I was going to try and heal on but just never got around to it. Played a shammy since TBC and never healed on her either. Maybe one day I'll get around to giving it a go. I just wish more women played wow, as yet again Im the only female in my guild.

As a woman, I haven't tried healing (or tanking), because of the pressure. I like to stay on the 'background' as a dps. My current main is a mage, and i like playing this character a lot.
So there you go :-)

Couldn't the same claim be made about all women having tanked at least once?
saliira Mar 13th 2012 7:36AM
I'm female and the one playstyle I've NEVER done is heal. I've dipped my toe into the tanking waters, but mostly prefer to DPS as kitty or hunter. Pandaren Monk might encourage me to heal... or maybe not.

I am a dedicated player. I have 4 85's and working on my 5th. I am also a woman. Yet, I have NEVER played a healer. I have tanked before, but didn't like it. And every time I started a toon with the intention of being a healer, I never get her up to level 15 to actually do dungeons with her. My main and my alts are all dps and that's what I'm comfortable with. I love to shoot things down with my hunter or Boomkin without taking direct hits and watch my dps meters to compare to other players. In no way has healing ever appealed to me. I have healed for a short time with my Boomkin with other 85's when we needed a little more heals during a Black Temple fight, but that's the extent that I've ever done. The only other women in my guild are a mage who sometimes plays her paladin tank and a rogue. Our healers are all men.

6/26 off the top of my head doesn't rate "most" imo. I'm one for actual data, though. None of us seem to main-class warriors, though. Weird! (I love my prot warrior alt.)

When I first started playing I started with a warlock, and played her thoroughly until I stopped playing WoW altogether mid-cataclysm. After also trying a druid, shaman and paladin (and not using healing once for any of them) I decided to try a DK tank. Then I decided to make a priest, tried healing a couple of 5 mans, and decided to go Shadow. I still enjoy my warlock better than any other class. DPS FTW!

i'm female and i must say, i love DPS!! i have a metric buttload of rogues, a lot of hunters, and a few mages.
i have one priest. one.
she's a dwarven priest who leveled up to L46 with a hunter friend and did not heal. vampiric embrace was her thing. once the hunter friend stopped playing, i stopped playing my priest. they're not fun IMO. i only rolled her to try out a priest, as they say, true wow players have tried every class/race.
i'm also not fond of they hybrid classes and tanking? no thank you. let me damage damage damage damage!
ArwenEM Mar 14th 2012 12:01AM
All women play Healers and All women play Hunters. I only fit one of the two sterotypes: I play a Hunter. I have a max-lvl priest, but I have never used her as a healer.
Flame Mar 14th 2012 12:44PM
I haven't healed once. I stick to DPS (although, when I have more time/desire, I would attempt tank or heals).
Jirnla Mar 23rd 2012 8:26PM
Omg! I'm a girl and I love my healer. I actually have two. My favorite is my druid by far but my shammy is okay, I played a priest in WOTLK but never got around to transferring her to my new server and switching factions and such. I don't remember why I tried healing but I really do love it now.(:
