I'm a woman, while I love healing, my main is currently a DPS: a shadow priest, and I love melting faces!
We have a lot of women in our guild. Two are DPS only, although one also tanks on occasion. One is one of our main tanks, but has a healing off-spec. Our GM is a woman, and she heals. I dps and heal as well when needed. I tanked in Wrath, but haven't done any tanking in Cata.
As to why I enjoy healing, I think it has more to do with my personality than anything else. I'm a registered dietitian, so I enjoy helping people. Healing is like that - it's helping the team.
As for the whole "women don't do melee" stereotype, well in Wrath, I loved playing melee. Although my holy paladin was my main, I greatly enjoyed going ret for our 10 man runs, and I also had an enhancement shaman and a blood DK (when blood could DPS). I didn't enjoy the changes they made to ret in Cata, so my paladin has been relegated to healing only. But that's not because I don't enjoy melee, it's simply because I don't enjoy ret as it currently plays.
