Two Bosses Enter: Echo of Baine vs. Echo of Jaina

Ah, this will be a fun mashup fight to watch. While I would have originally said this would be a win for Baine's father Cairne immediately, I don't know if I can say the same for his son. With Baine's popularity on the rise, however, anything is possible. There is also the looming irony of two of the most friendly and conflict-averse characters in the entire game going head-to-head in a winner-takes-all fight. It's almost like it was planned all along. Don't worry, it wasn't. I'm not that clever.
Last week's matchup was a sad shut-out for Arcurion, who I am sure most people don't even know because he lives at the beginning of a dungeon that people try their best to close their eyes and breeze through. Truth be told, it usually works, and that's all right in my book. Easy and fun are better than frustrating and time-consuming, in my book.
Who takes home the next coveted spot on the ever-dangerous quest to become the champion on Two Bosses Enter? Only you can decide ...

The rules of the ring
- The WoW Insider Ring is considered neutral territory, where both combatants are able to access their usual encounter mechanics and abilities. If you can't visualize it inside the squared circle, visualize it someplace else -- but you must take into consideration all of each bosses' abilities and mechanics.
- Assume that each opponent is intelligent and capable of strategic thinking.
- All of the competitors' abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents (with apologies to considerations of lore on this point).
- Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools, and comparative overall damage output.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story, and scale. Everything is a factor; seeking balance is your goal as a spectator and judge.

In his first match of the tournament, the Echo of Baine demolished his opponent Peroth'arn. With a commanding 65.2% of the vote, Baine pushed forward as an early crowd favorite at the beginning of the voting. I am under the impression that Baine's connection as son to the beloved Cairne Bloodhoof definitely plays into his popularity, which actually makes a lot of sense for the tauren leader, considering he is supposed to have the strength, wisdom, and power of all his ancestors before him. Take that, logic!
Ancestors or not, the Echo of Baine is a tricky foe to deal with, especially because of the environmental concerns. Baine's opponent might not be able to Blink as effectively as she would like to considering the rocky, disjointed, and dangerous terrain. Jaina may be a great mage, but it's tough to cast spells when you're neck-deep in lava.
Baine also has a distinct advantage in his ability to throw his weapon when Jaina moves. He can still attack at range while moving back into positon, which might not actually be that far away, depending on the timing and distance of Jaina's blinks.
The Echo of Baine's abilities include:
- Molten Axe Echo of Baine's axe gets supercharged when he dips into the lava around his platforms.
- Molten Fists Echo of Baine's enemies can also dip into the lava for a Molten Fists buff, inflicting extra fire damage on hit.
- Pulverize Baine slams down his totem, destroying the platform he is on and hitting all nearby enemies for a nice chunk of damage. Platforms will eventually return but take some time.
- Throw Totem Echo of Baine throws his totem at a target, causing lots of damage and knocking his target back. His totem can then be picked up and thrown back at Baine, stunning him briefly and increasing his damage taken.

The Echo of Jaina did not have as decisive a victory against her opponent Morchok as many would have expected. I thought more people out there were Jaina fans! She's getting a book, people -- get excited. Anyway, we'll see whether or not her mediocre popularity can stand in the way of Baine Bloodhoof.
The real triumph of Jaina's match was the number of votes for one of the first raid boss to ever be a part of Two Bosses Enter. The Morchok encounter has probably been encountered by exponentially more players than any other first boss in a raid due to the new Dungeon Finder, and that's awesome. More content for more people is encouraging for the genre as a whole.
Echo of Jaina's abilities include:
- Blink Jaina blinks.
- Frost Blades Jaina will fire three large frost blades that fan out in front of her.
- Frostbolt Volley Frostbolts erupt from Jaina's hands, dealing damage and slowing movement speed.
- Flarecore Echo of Jaina throws a Flarecore ember on the ground near her enemies, which explodes if it is touched. If the embers are not triggered in 10 seconds, the Flarecore explodes for massive damage.
- Pyroblast Jaina winds up a huge damaging fireball and launches it at a target, dealing heavy damage.

Last Week's Winner: Lord Godfrey
Poor, poor Arcurion. How on earth could this nobody defeat the great Lord Godfrey, slayer of Sylvanas, hero of Shadowfang? As you might have guessed, this matchup was a complete shutout, as Godfrey grabbed a staggering 73.7% of the vote. Those are big numbers, baby. Big, big numbers. Let's hope Arcurion doesn't get too roughed up in the battle reports.
Rai discussed some sentiments that hit Arcurion deep, and that's an emotional wound that will never heal:
I'd post a witty comment about Godfrey utilising his ghouls and cursed bullets, of which Arcurion couldn't dodge at the end, and such but Arcurion is, in my opinion, the weakest boss in Cataclysm.I know, right? Arcurion, I don't know, man. You were fun the first few times, but you've just waned in required effort. I would absolutely hate to be a mid-instance boss, a filler obstacle before the real deal. Such a sad existence. You're like a middle management version of a Star Trek red shirt. Arcurion could have gone to technical school and apprenticed as an electrician or something -- but no, his mother and father forced him into Twilight University. Sometimes the college of the damned isn't the best option for every student.
Then again, maybe that's just post-Mannoroth syndrome.
Vaniya's description of the fight was pretty darn good, especially with the twist ending, and Godfrey's ferocity is felt through the story. Good work! Also, Arcurion really never stood a chance, did he?
Hi! Guess I'll put a quick note up here, I'm Vaniya and I play on both Elune and Wyrmrest Accord, and any time in the past you've seen the name Vaniya on these, it's me :P Story Time!Excellent work as always, commenters. While too long to post the entire thing, please also pay special attention to reader Ikana's story of the fight, which you can go to right here. I love it, and you should read it, and that's all.
Arcurion stood outside the double doors, unsure how he got to be there, when an arguing duo of a Worgen and Undead rushed past him, breaking down the door. Arcurion shot a bolt of frost magic at them, but it dissipated in a small flash of light. The pair, still unaware of him, shouted "Godfrey! You will pay for your crimes!"
Lord Godfrey, disturbed from his work, looked over and swiftly shot at the two. They were flung out of the room, past Arcurion, who was walking into the room. After he passed the threshold, a bronze shield covered his only exit. Godfrey turned towards the Ascendant, saying "More interruptions? This will not stand!" he fired a round of cursed bullets at Arcurion, who leapt out of the way. In response, Arcurion fired a Hand of Frost at Godfrey, grabbing his throat.
"Insolent wretch!" Godfrey cried as he flung Arcurion with inhuman strength away from him. Arcurion, angered, called upon his magic and summoned forth his elemental minions. Not pleased, Godfrey raised a small army of ghouls, which went to attack. After seeing his minions dispatched of, Arcurion said "You shall not survive today, Mage!" and conjured up a Torrent of Frost, cutting down swathes of the undead.
"I can do that too." stated Godfrey calmly, aiming his pistols at Arcurion. While running from the barrage of dark bullets, Arcurion formed an icy prison around Godfrey, trapping him in place. Walking smugly to the now frozen man, Arcurion charged up a massive spell. "Guess we know who is stronger." said Arcurion.
Right as the spell shattered his prison, Godfrey blinked past Arcurion, shooting him in the back of his head, killing him instantly. "Guess we do." said Godfrey. And at that moment, Sylvanas fired seven arrows into his black heart. "That's for killing be, you bastard."
Vote or die. Do it now!

In my experience, whenever a warrior finally gets to a mage, they just blink away. Sure, a warrior may charge, but he'll leave his totem lying around and will get stunned because of it.
Ice wall to the face!

Once again, Baine Bloodhoof stood in the circular pool of lava. He wasn't a fool, of course; a slab of obsidian floating in the pool kept him out of the intense heat not six inches away from his hooves. There were 4 such rocks, in a rough diamond-like shape, and standing on the one opposite him was a human female. One he'd met several months ago, shortly after his father was murdered by Magatha Grimtotem. One he knew to be a powerful magi, trusted by his former warchief, Thrall. One who held the line against the Burning Legion.
One called Jaina Proudmoore.
"You! Are you the one responsible for what has happened here...?"
Her look of puzzlement only enraged Baine. Seething rage filled him. He had trusted her. Thrall had trusted her. Yet she was the one who desecrated this land. It must have been her. Who else could have done it?
Jaina hopped to the rock adjacent to his, then to his own. She still looked puzzled, and attempted to explain that she had not done anything to the landscape. Lies, of course. Lies. Lies. LIES!
"What dark horrors have you wrought in this place? By my ancestors' honor, I shall take you to task!"
And Baine charged, closing the gap between them in a heartbeat.
To her credit, Jaina reacted fast, instantly summoning a fiery boulder and smashing it into his shoulder. The flames stung, but Baine shrugged it off. His axe glowed red as he pulled it from the lava beside him - a trick he learned from his battle against Peroth'arn. She backstepped, dodging the glowing axe while preparing another flaming orb in her hands. This one caught Baine full in the chest, and he staggered back, pinwheeling at the edge. He grabbed his totem, and hurled it at Jaina, using the same motion to regain his balance. She flew clear of the platforms over the lava pool.
"Perhaps this will cool your head!"
All of a sudden, Jaina was no longer flying over the lava. She stood only a couple feet in front of him, sweeping her arms forward, as if swinging a sword upwards. And blades, made of solid ice, swept forward at Baine. He rolled to the side, enough to dodge the middle blade but not enough to hit the right one. He used this as an excuse to re-ingite his axe, and charged at the mage once again.
Jaina wasn't done it seemed. She hurled an orange ball over to one of the adjacent platforms. A Flarecore, Baine recognised. A potent piece of magic that exploded after a short while, devistating anything caught in the blast (no doubt what caused this landscape's devistation). It was also easily destroyed - if he got to it in time.
Baine lept, landing on the little ball. It shattered. So did the entire platform.
He swam back towards the rock Jaina was still standing on. She smiled, seeing the perfect opportunity. She sent out a frostbolt to slow his swimming, and blinking into position, she unleashed another 3 blades of ice his way.
Which melted upon hitting the lava, as Baine had planned.
Baine could throw his totem nearly as well swimming as he could standing, as Jaina learned a few seconds later. This time, she couldn't blink back to the platform, and Baine crawled up long before Jaina got close. His axe shone with a crimson matched only by the magma around him, as he prepared to strike the finishing blow as the mage reached the edge.
And the pyroblast again caught him full in the chest.
Another flarecore went out, onto the other adjecent platform. Baine slammed Jaina with the flat of his axe and ran to it, jumping the gap between rocks. Squishing the magic, Baine turned around in time to deflect a pyroblast with his axe, and used the heat to melt the frostbolt she followed it up with. Baine threw his totem at the mage again. Jaina reacted faster than she had previously, avoiding the projectile altogether with her Blink and Frost Blades combo. But Baine had wanted her to blink, for now he lept forward, intent on shattering the rocks beneath her feet.
And his own totem slammed him on the head before he landed. His vision blurred, he felt nauseous. He was vaguely aware he was standing there, open for attack. And as Jaina's Pyroblast flew towards his head, he heard her words.
"You forced my hand."

Excellent.

Interesting story, but i disagree with the last part when Jaina throws the totem at Baine in mid air. first (if you folow mechanics) Baine cant be targeted in mid air, thus the totem cant hit, second (if you folow phisical laws(which i think you do since Jaina´s inc lance could melt in the lava)) Baine is generating a lot more force per pound of his body while hes leaping then Jaina could possibly generate by throwing the totem, so it would only bounce off him and do no effect, and thus she threw awey her chance (pun intended:)). still i give you credit for how smartly you illustrated how their spells were used:). like to see more.

As a tank, I find the Baine encounter way more difficult than the Jaina one.
Thus, Baine wins.
andysdavis Mar 12th 2012 5:25PM
My vote on this one is for Baine simply because if Jaina's anything like the majority of the pugs I've been in, she won't even make it to Baine's platform before face-pulling a pack or two of trash. :P

you win best comment!

Unless Baine is like the other half of the PGs that pull Jaina with out clearing that pats around her. Jaina +1
I See What I Did There Mar 12th 2012 5:30PM
I think Baine would come out on top in this match up, but Jaina will win the poll for two big reasons.

That is a great pic of Lord Godfrey btw. Fanart i'm guessing.

Nope! That's actually the official artwork used on Lord Godfrey's card in the TCG

The bleak future of the End Time was silent. An echo of her former self, Jaina wandered the desolate remains of Dragonblight, never stopping, looking for some loose thread to explain what had happened. The dusk clung to the sky and dawn never came. Weeks passed before a sound was heard from the distance. An unrelenting cry. Curiously, the echo of Jaina began to walk in that direction. After hours of wandering, she arrived at the place formerly known as the Obsidian Dragonshrine.
She wandered slowly down towards a large pool of lava, with four floating platforms on the surface. As she crossed the first two, her footsteps alerted the hulking remnant of Baine Bloodhoof to her presence. He turned to face her, recognising her face but unable to remember where from, except the distant past. Why did he remember her? It had to be his rage. She did this. She brought this disrespect to his ancestors. She had to die.
Without warning, Baine charged through the lava and onto the platform she was stood on. Luckily, Jaina was prepared (not from being used to men charging at her, but from being a powerful mage) and channelled a volley of frostbolts at him, slowing the charge to a saunter. Baine swung at her violently with his Molten Axe, dealing some damage but lessened by the frost magic lingering on his body. He swung again but hit only air, as Jaina used Blink and appeared on another platform, firing off a Pyroblast. It hit Baine in the chest, angering him and causing him to charge once more. Empowered by the lava as he charged, Baine roared. Jaina launched a flurry of frost blades, but the Tauren was charging and therefore unaffected. He slammed into Jaina, striking twice and then pulverizing the platform, causing her to drop into the lava.
"...not like this..." she gasped, firing off a Flarecore and Blinking onto another platform. Baine climbed out of the lava and towards her, noticing the Flarecore out of the corner of his eye and wondering what purpose it served. As it detonated and bathed him in flames, he roared in pain, being hit by another frost volley but striking hard at her nevertheless. After about ten seconds of exchanging axe blows and pyroblasts, Jaina used Blink and reappeared on another platform, firing off another fan of ice blades. Baine prepared to charge, but threw his totem at Jaina instead, knocking her back into the lava, as he himself was hit by the icy blades and frozen temporarily. As he cooled down, he thought of his father, taken away from him. His father would have won this already, he thought. His father would have been strong and smart enough to know how to handle the fiery orb that the mage had fired off...
The ice unfroze. Baine charged for Jaina, jumping across the lava to her platform. Jaina fired off another Flarecore, which landed on the platform he'd come from. After the realisation of what was happening hit him, Baine turned and ran back onto the other platform, touching the Flarecore and detonating it prematurely. The damage was bareable. He turned and charged again, smashing his axe into the ground and breaking this platform. Jaina smirked and disappeared, reappearing on the platform. Baine swam through the lava, heavily injured and approaching her, narrowly avoiding the ice blades. He stepped towards her and swung again.
"Why do you persist? Stop now and I will spare your life!"
"I cannot fail my ancestors!" Baine roared, striking again. Jaina took the repeated axe blows, firing off a few frostbolt volleys but by this point the two of them were in danger. The fight continued for a few more seconds before Jaina realised what was going to happen. She couldn't take much more.
"You fight with honour. You have won."
She blinked and disappeared. Baine looked out over the pool of lava. The two middle platforms had been destroyed. The last one remained, but it was so far away...
The bubbles under the lava stopped.
Randomize Mar 12th 2012 7:16PM
Baine's an obvious choice here. Every time Jaina blinks away, Baine gets charged by lava. Plus, his weapon throws knock her off the platform, delaying her casts and damaging her with lava. I'll just assume that there's an unlimited number of platforms though, otherwise this fight would be too easy for Baine.

good read ;) kudos

I should make them shorter... haha just kidding. I was trying to just give Godfrey a bit of a challenge last time. Otherwise it would have been "Fight, boom, Godfrey wins". I knew he was gonna win. Glad you liked it! Means a lot to me. I'm posting my own version of this fight now! Even if I don't have a favorite in this one...
----------
End Time was silent, the remains of Wyrmrest Temple seemed to become the only thing alive, as spectators from the past came via the bronze dragonflight. The echoes of Baine and Jaina were held on opposite sides of the temple, unable to move. They could only talk and turn their heads to look around.
Many people were on the higher floor, waiting for the fight to start. Some of the other bosses were there as well. Most likely to study the winner's moves so they'll have the upper hand should they have to fight the victor of this fight. The was some lava near by, so that Baine's echo would have what he needs for his axe.
Tirion Fordring called down from above, "Champions, as many of you know, Arcurion was killed in the last fight against Lord Godfrey and-" the Paladin was cut off by Godfrey himself,
"Who cares about some elemental that got totally destroyed? Let's just get to the fight!"
"You're only saying that because he broke your leg. Now as I was saying..."
"Paladin, even Arthas would agree you should just shut it and get the fight started."
Tirion sighed as he heard whispers of agreement throughout the temple, "Fine... CHAMPIONS! FIGHT!"
The echoes were set free, and instantly started attacking each other.
Baine soaked his axe in lava, then sliced at the young mage. Jaina blinked just in time and fired a frostbolt, hitting Baine right in the back. The Tauren yelled out in surprise and pain as the frost started to freeze him, making him slower. On the other hand, Jaina got hit by the back of Baine's axe. Causing her to be wounded as she started to bleed.
"That's.... it...." Jaina groaned as she casted a pyroblast, which Baine managed to get behind her and throw a totem at her, sending her flying into the lava.
Jaina screamed, a warped, echoing scream that seemed to last a very long time. It seemed to be over.
Sylvanas looked at Godfrey, "Well, I won the bet. Jaina lost. Give me 20 Gold-"
Jaina suddenly appeared behind Baine.
"You were saying Sylvanas?"
"Shut up."
Jaina summoned up frost blades, which sliced everything in front of her. Baine managed to block the first one, but the other two hit his chest and left arm. The Tauren Chieftain roared in pain, then suddenly hit the totem that was on the ground with his axe. A huge tremor shook the temple, some of the remains of Deathwing fell off. Jaina was thrown to the ground, and crushed by Deathwing's right wing. The Stadium was quiet.
"You now owe me 20 gold Godfrey."
"Shut up."
"The irony, I love it."
"Sylvanas, shut up before I kill you again."
Sylvanas glared at him then looked at Tirion, "Well, are you going to annouce something?"
The Paladin shook his head, "I guess. The winner of this match is The echo of Baine! Let's get back to our time before we get crushed like Jaina. Quickly now!"
------------
Well that's it. If you were wondering why Godfrey was betting with Sylvanas that Jaina was going to win, that because Godfrey is part mage. And, as you know with Godfrey, anything that's like him is gonna win.
Baine made him eat his words. :D

Almost hate to have to say it but all I can see going on here this time is a hoard fans vs alliance fans pissing contest
Ikana Mar 13th 2012 12:01AM
Yeah. That's what I'm seeing too. I voted for Baine since it just seems to me like he's going to win. Ticks me off when people are all like "This guy wins because he is epic" all you can say is wow.
Rai Mar 13th 2012 10:50AM
I mostly play Alliance, yet I think Baine would win.
However, it's probably a factor.
