I think generally what's happening is that the price of homogenization of the classes is, surprisingly, homogenization. I get why they're trying to make all classes have some overlap in abilities, I mean, having to search far and wide for a frost mage for one boss, or a holy paladin for another is not fun, and certainly not for the people who don't want to play those things but have to to keep raid spots. However, giving classes overlapping utility and normalizing DPS/healing/mitigation for every spec means that the class one wants to play matters less and less, which begs the question, why have classes at all? I think this banner thing, along with shaman totems, druid forms and eclipse, paladin holy power etc. is an attempt to give each class SOMETHING unique. Whether they succeed or not remains to be seen, but there has to be some variety and exclusivity in these class roles, otherwise we're all just playing the same character, and adding new classes becomes meaningless. We'll have to just wait until it comes out to see how things play out I guess...
