Troll druids at the end of Cataclysm

In November 2010, before Cataclysm hit, I wrote a series of articles on why (or why not) to play a particular druidic race for theorycrafting, lore, and roleplay purposes. These articles turned out to be a really big hit with readers, and you can find them here:
- Shifting Perspectives: Why (or why not) to play a night elf druid
- Shifting Perspectives: Why (or why not) to play a tauren druid
- Shifting Perspectives: Why (or why not) to play a worgen druid
- Shifting Perspectives: Why (or why not) to play a troll druid
The triumph of the Darkspear
The Darkspear are coming off the events of Cataclysm with a sense of unmitigated and even savage triumph. They have the Echo Islands back. They've added powerful druids and warlocks to their ranks. They led the charge into Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman and ended or severely crippled Zandalari meddling. (Given that the Zandalari are the spiritual leaders of the troll tribes, I think the Darkspears' willingness to confront them is a rather compelling sign of their confidence -- or perhaps arrogance -- concerning their place among said tribes. They've been on the short end of the stick for a while, and I wouldn't put it past them to indulge a well-nursed desire for revenge.)
Yes, they had a bad start when Garrosh unexpectedly banished them from central Orgrimmar and Vol'jin publicly fell out with him, but they've bounced back nicely. From the trolls' perspective, this expansion has been one solid win after another, which has some interesting implications for their druids.
If you play a troll druid, you are part of the sole druidic race that isn't approaching Mists of Pandaria in a state of severe preoccupation.
- You're not saddled with the night elves' introspection over the now-permanent loss of their immortality. In some ways, you probably think the elves and the dragons both got what was coming to them. Those useless lizards have been playing favorites with the elves for how many thousands of years now? Enough already, sneer the trolls.
- You don't share the taurens' unease over their future with the Horde or qualms about Garrosh's methods. (This is the distinction between the tauren and the trolls. The tauren don't like Garrosh or how he fights; the trolls don't like Garrosh, but they're not the people to talk to about improving his conduct in a war.) Vol'jin is quite explicit on this point; faced with a choice between the Zandalari and the Horde, he picks the Horde. That's a decision the tauren are glad they haven't had to make. Yet.
- Unlike the worgen, you don't give a rat's ass about Gilneas and never will. Oh, you don't have your homeland anymore? Boo-hoo. This is Azeroth. You don't get what you deserve; you get what you take. Thus saith the Darkspear.
Any sense of duty?
Personally, I have no idea, but here's why. Trolls and worgen share two things that night elves and tauren don't -- merciless pragmatism and a desultory sense of obligation (at best!) to the idea of a higher cause. For trolls, they're accountable to the loa, Vol'jin, and the Horde, in precisely that order. Why should they care about the Cenarion Circle or the Cenarion Expedition when the elves are still holding down the fort? The tauren have been content to play a secondary role in both organizations (more so the Circle than the Expedition) out of respect for the night elves' seniority and knowledge, but trolls will intrinsically rebel at the notion of playing second banana to the elves in anything.
"The elves are our friends," say the tauren.
Say the trolls, "How come elves have all the power in the Cenarion Circle and you guys occupy guard posts in Moonglade?"
"Uh," say the tauren.
Politics is personal, and that alone might keep the trolls from assuming a more important role in anything like the Guardians of Hyjal or organizations like it. The quiet power shift that's under way with the druidic population in the world is best exemplified in our cynical little jungle freaks. Is there an existential threat to the world? OK, they're on board. Something a little more esoteric? Eh. If they're not busy.
While there are individual trolls out there who take a great interest in the affairs of the world and brotherhood among the races (and you might be playing one of them), this isn't a sentiment that most are likely to profess.
What do the troll druids think of the pandaren? The pandaren are new and interesting, but are they relevant? The pandaren emphasis on balance is likely to amuse the trolls in much the same way that the paladins' belief system does. (Of note: Paladins are the only class that trolls can't be.) Balance? What balance? Have you looked at the world recently? Do you see a whole lot of balance out there? Stop fooling yourself and hand me that polearm -- something here needs killin'.
What is Azeroth's perspective on troll druids right now? "Young and more arrogant by the day. Underneath all the mumbo jumbo, tauren at least seem to care about doing the right thing, or at least paying lip service to it. Trolls don't. They'll do the right thing when it suits them. Otherwise, all bets are off."
A mixed bag of racials As with the worgen and night elves, nothing's changed since our original article on the subject (barring the subsequent loss of snare immunity for ferals), although a level 90 MoP talent (Disentanglement) will render Da Voodoo Shuffle completely useless once again. Otherwise, Beast Slaying is situational. Berserking is still the best troll racial, and Horde-side DPS players and healers will get more benefit from it than anything the tauren have to offer. Even then, bear in mind that it is not a haste increase and will have no impact on HoT ticks, merely cast speeds.
Neutral points No troll racial really has an impact on tanks.

Hey readers! Just an FYI. There are 3 newish troll female hairdos available at the barbershop! I didn't realize this until I rezzed a toon and made her a female troll. And one of them is realllly nice (kind of an updo - think male troll dreadlocks without the individual dreads)
Edymnion Mar 13th 2012 11:35PM
Yeah, orc females got a stealth increase to their doo's as well. I don't remember seeing it announced, but it looks like they slipped some new styles in for everybody.

The Darkspear are almost delightfully stable in this world of philosophical quandaries and in-fighting. They know who they are, they know what they believe, and there is no higher purpose than the life, liberty, and freedom of their tribe.
I imagine if you were to walk up to one of the saviors of Azeroth, after watching the end of Illidan, Arthas, and Deathwing, and ask why they did it, they'd tell you that they dealt with a threat to the tribe.

No troll racial really has an impact on tanks? Are you kidding me?
Given over the course of a fight, the troll regeneration racial will up and surpass the tauren stamina racial by a long shot. By a very long shot. Most people don't really take a critical eye on it when it comes to tanks, which I think is a darn shame.
Over the course of any given fight, that passive regeneration will do a *lot* of healing. Sure, you may get a smudge of over-healing, but the racial certainly shouldn't be discounted. The amount of health you get over the full duration of a fifteen minute long boss fight is staggering. You really don't notice the healing taking place, it's completely passive, but it's made the difference in some progression encounters where healers fall flat out of mana, believe me.

Going to extend on what I said with specifics I originally found on Wowhead:
"Regeneration has become more useful in Cataclysm.
Currently, it appears that Health Regeneration has been standardized to one percent of maximum HP every two seconds, regardless of your Spirit, when out of combat and zilch when in combat. Trolls, however, regenerate 1.1% of their HP every two seconds out of combat and 0.11% of their maximum HP every two seconds in combat.
Ultimately, a Troll regenerates 0.055% of their HP every second in combat. This may not sound tremendous at first glance, but over the course of a five minute fight it means a Troll has the potential to regenerate 16.5% of their total HP (modified downward by how much time they spend at maximum HP). Given a source of steady, constant damage, it wouldn't be unfair to claim regeneration could easily increase your total HP by 15% over five minutes. If a fight lasts six minutes, that number rises to nearly 20%.
A huge mark in favor of Troll Tanks."
Pyromelter Mar 13th 2012 6:39PM
wowhead number crunchers put it at 15% of health regenerated every 5 minutes.
So it would appear that you have made a correct statement, with independent corroboration.
(although... 15 minutes? How many boss fights are 15 minutes these days?)
Killik Mar 14th 2012 4:48AM
Well, I might be way off-base here, but wouldn't that only be useful if the tank wasn't getting any heals?
The advantage of a bigger health pool is that it's a bigger buffer, allowing more time for the healers to keep the tank up. A minuscule trickle of additional, passive healing doesn't provide that advantage and it's insignificant next to even the weakest healing spells, as healers will be replenishing many, many times the tank's health over the course of a fight.

"You don't share the taurens' unease over their future with the Horde or qualms about Garrosh's methods."
Uh, I'd actually have to disagree with you on this. The trolls as a whole seem to be pretty well aware of Garrosh's incredibly low opinion of them, and his denigration of their efforts to aid the orcs' war efforts abroad ("What do you mean "our" victories?") was blatent as hell. Vol'jin himself has threatened to shoot Garrosh down when the time comes, and it's only Thrall's efforts to pacify him that have the guy waiting and watching..."for now."
Even with Thrall's plea for unity, when Vol'jin went to war with the Zandalari, it wasn't just because of his Horde loyalties, but his hatred of the Gurubashi and the recognition that the Zandalari intended to wipe out or enslave the other races of the world, something Vol'jin (being a fairly decent guy, all considered) held no truck with. He undercut Garrosh pretty severely in the ensuing conflict, reaching out to both the high elves and the Alliance as a whole in his efforts to thwart the Zandalari without bothering to ask permission from his Warchief.
What's most telling, look at the Horde military during the invasions of Vashj'ir and the Highlands - all orcs, straight up. The traditional blending of troll and orc into one seamless fighting force that's been the norm since vanilla is gone, or at least heavily played down. That's a pretty devastating blow to the symbolism of unity in the Horde.
icepyro Mar 13th 2012 8:54PM
Yeah, but Vol'jin isn't uneasy about the future with the Horde or have qualms with Garrosh's methods.
Vol'jin has qualms with Garrosh being an idiot, but they now keep sufficient distance that they can do what each of them like. If Garrosh approaches Vol'jinn like he did Sylvanas, he will be dead. In the meantime, his methods are his own and don't really interfere nor rely upon the trolls, so Vol'jinn is cool with that until their home city is secure and the zandalari and whatever else is dealt with.
Vol'jinn isn't uneasy about the future with the Horde either. He's laid back and either he'll make amends with Garrosh when the time is right, or Garrosh will finish with the trolls and cut them off and be killed for it. There isn't really unease. There are too many other things to do than worry about it.
Vol'jinn takes things in the long run and doesn't rush. He's in a position where he can wait to see what should happen and will act then. Despise, hate, whatever all they want, there is no hurry to reconcile differences or worry about them.

Say the trolls, "How come elves have all the power in the Cenarion Circle and you guys occupy guard posts in Moonglade?"
"Uh," say the tauren.
.... because "Doormat" is a part of the Tauren persona.
John Mar 13th 2012 7:33PM
''Doormat''? More like a bear rug you find in fron tof the fire of a log cabin! ;-)
mheatleyadams Mar 13th 2012 8:19PM
Just gotta say, in regards to the Zandalari...the Darkspear have always been the outcast Troll group; they were the Jungle trolls driven out of Stranglethorn Vale by the Gurubashi years ago. The fact that Vol'jin tells the rest of the troll tribes to take a flying leap isn't that much of a surprise, since the Troll's have done jack squat for the Darkspears for centuries.
ravyncat Mar 13th 2012 8:21PM
I have to say the delightful picture of a tutti-frutti Troll kitteh just made me roll a baby one to play with. XD
VezRoth Mar 13th 2012 11:16PM
I've always liked Trolls on the Horde side. Trolls and Undead have always been my favorite Horde race, and I stick by my guns with them. I only wish that I wasn't so entrenched in the Alliance side of this fight. All of my best, and brightest are Allies. I switched to horde during WotLK and powered up a few toons to 80. A shaman, and a DK among them, but for the end of LK and the Beginning of Cata they fell to the way-side as my wife started playing again, and she went back to her Allies.
I kind of miss my trolls. /sniff.
themightysven Mar 14th 2012 12:21AM
"No troll racial really has an impact on tanks."
except for the hilarious interaction between Beast Slaying and Baron Ashbury when Cata first shipped.
AkiyaWarrior Mar 14th 2012 12:43AM
I love trolls. My main is a troll warrior but I made a druid when they became available just because.
"This is Azeroth. You don't get what you deserve; you get what you take. Thus saith the Darkspear."
I want this on a t-shirt, or maybe a bumber sticker. Make it so, WowInsider.
mibu.work1 Mar 14th 2012 2:44AM
The best thing, in my opinion, of the darkspear is their tenacity. They've bounced back, with a little help, from all their problems, handled their own issues, and still show up to lead the way when others fall behind. Vol'jin exemplifies this, and it shows; a Windrunner sister deferred to his judgement when tackling a race of trolls she had spent a good portion of her life fighting, and he also got the support of the Ranger General of Silvermoon on his side too. Down south, he spearheaded (get it) the lash back against the Gurubashi, and everyone from the warriors at Grom'gol to Baron Revalgaze himself handed him the reigns once he showed up. Vol'jin has proven himself to be wise in peace, cunning in war, and ferocious in battle. He's honestly a near-perfect leader for the trolls.
That's not to say he's without flaws. He can be rash when his emotions are roused, such as his threats to Garrosh and his swift departure after the death of the Sea Witch. He also puts a great deal of faith into his own abilities when perhaps he should err on the side of caution. That said, it may be that he simply enters a conflict when he's confident he can win, because he's looked at it from all the angles and knows what to do. Watch him brashly ignore the call of the Zandalari and go his own path, confident that he can bury his enemies. Considering the fact that he does, it clearly shows he knows what he's doing.
As for the druids (oh yea, this article is kinda about them), I have no complaints. Troll druids have some of the best models I've seen in this game. Their cat form looks like a tiger, it moves like a tiger, it feel like a tiger. Their bears are simultaneously cuddly and terrifying. Their Epic Bat forms look great, each detail accenting the troll-ness of the character. That said, it wouldn't hurt to see some other changes. Make the travel form a raptor, the water form a crocalisk, make the first bat form at least have tusks. The biggest issue, of course, is the moonkin form. A recolor of the night-elf model, which can also be found in Hinterlands, is not sufficient. Go back, put some tusks on it, give it fetishes dangling from the antlers, then we'll talk.
Bynde Mar 14th 2012 1:04PM
I think Troll ferals are so freaking cool.
But, they are the Horde, and therefore on the wrong team and I am biologically unable to roll a horde toon, so I must admire from a afar.
Tagartou Apr 2nd 2012 7:42PM
I guess that you are just out of the loop and its an easy thing to misinterpret, but Berserking does add DoT ticks, HoT ticks, and Energy Regen. It is probably one of the best throughput racials for druids, at least for casters.
