I'll back you up on that, mostly. Blizz writes well when it comes to big stuff, like faction politics or world-changing events. The characters are interesting and the stories are engaging. That said, for the vast majority of the leveling process, you are participating in neither of those things. What you do get, story-wise, are tidbits of awesome largely interspersed with tedium.
That's not to say you won't find things to like, though. If you like nerd humor and pop culture references, you'll find yourself well cared for. There are other moments too, like the "punch Deathwing in the face" quest, that you'll remember for a long time because they're insanely fun.
Everyone who has leveled at least one character and paid even the barest amount of attention to the quests can tell you about a quest they absolutely loved, but those stand out so well precisely because they're mixed in with a lot of others that just don't reward the player to the same degree.
