Kotaku has got the scoop on the cool fake Monopoly money to be included with the
World of Warcraft Monopoly game. Each bill features a faction leader (and Chen Stormstout) on the various notes, with familiar faction art representing the heroes. Here is the breakdown of characters on each bill:
-
$1 bill Chen Stormstout
-
$5 bill Magni Bronzebeard
-
$10 bill Vol'jin
-
$20 bill Tyrande Whisperwind
-
$50 bill Sylvanas Windrunner
-
$100 bill Varian Wrynn
-
$500 bill Thrall
Check out the gallery below of each of the
Monopoly money game pieces. (
Thanks to Kotaku for the story.)

His complaint about our own personal green-skinned Space Jesus seemed rather mild, actually.

1) the people making the game don't assign things like this (who goes on what bill), the marketing department does.
2) Whichever marketing genius assigned thrall to the max value bill, and added him wearing his war chief armor at that, needs a SEVERE talking to. That was just dumb.
3) Not that I care either way, I'm a little thrall'd out honestly, just saying, you can't pin this on the WoW storytellers per-se. It's a little too boneheaded for them....

Crazy thought here, but maybe, just maybe, they put him in his Warchief armor because that was the aesthetic they wanted for the bill? That particular piece of artwork worked best in this situation?
I mean, it is entirely possible that not every single decision about what happens to which character is a serious political statement on behalf of Blizzard as a whole on which of the two factions that they made up is somehow "favored." Some times decisions like this are made because it looks good, or because they're trying to tell a particular story, or just because the designer who was responsible for that particular bill came to the picture of Thrall in his armor first, and decided to run with that.

Daed: perhaps I was unclear (it happens..not often, but it does).
I don't think putting Thrall on the $500 was a dumb move because it showed horde favoritism (I don't think it matters one way or the other, myself..... but then, I've never been one for faction nonsense one way or another. My main being a Tauren Druid, the closest you can get to 'neutral good' alignment in WoW ....), I think it was a dumb move because it is almost guaranteed to inspire the sort of freaking out we're seeing here, and more than likely on the "official" boards as well (I haven't been there yet today, so I don't know for sure).
Regardless, the results are amusing to watch.

What did you expect...Thrall is Blizzard's Poster Child...if they were smart the $500 bill should have been Chen to tie in with MoP.....just sayin!
Prelimar Mar 15th 2012 10:06AM
sorry, it's *clearly* horde favoritism -- not sure why they even bother denying it anymore. all that being said, i'd probably be saving all my Magni bills, and i'd be poor anyway. : )
watspr02 Mar 15th 2012 10:10AM
Wow, I was expecting to see complaints about not seeing a gnome, tauren, goblin, or worgen on there and all people are complaining about is faction bias. Where's all of the gnome players at? You've got a LOT more complaints about how gnomes have been ignored in everything than anything that either faction has on faction bias. You might as well have your own version of DHETA about Blizzard being against gnomes. Also who doesn't like the Tauren? Aliiance, horde, it doesn't matter. Everyone likes the Tauren. Would there been as much complaints if Cairne was on the 500 and Magni on the 100 or vice versa? I think not. Goblin and Worgen are the new thing so I can understand them being left out of here but they better have something on the board itself.

Wait until you see Orgrimmar worth more than Stormwind and THEN you'll see the rage.
Luotian Mar 15th 2012 10:29AM
Gnomergon should be Boardwalk, because nobody can capture it!
watspr02 Mar 15th 2012 10:54AM
Wow, I didn't even notice that Blood Elves and Drenai didn't have anything on there either. Let me go hang my head in shame since my main is a BE.
*hangs his head in shame*
Ullaana Mar 15th 2012 11:36AM
Actually, the gnomes are playing as the pieces in the game, according to my daughter who has 5 different gnome characters.
Saikoujin Mar 15th 2012 10:26AM
Clearly, WoW Insider favors the Horde because it chose to feature said bill as the article's header.
(I never pass up an opportunity to add fuel to the fire.)
SamLowry Mar 15th 2012 12:13PM
I think they were taking that opportunity, too.
Daedalus Mar 15th 2012 10:30AM
Okay, I say this as a committed alliance player: really? Really, people? You're actually getting upset about Thrall being on the $500?
First off, who's to say the $500 is actually the prize bill to be on; yeah, it's the highest denomination, but in my experience in Monopoly, it's not exactly the most used bill; I see hundreds passed around a lot more, so an argument could be made that Varian got the top spot.
Secondly: who would you put there instead? If the $500 is really meant to be the emblematic character, what character would that be? What character do you think is a better choice for the face of the game? What other character says "World of Warcraft" loudly enough to be recognizable even for non-players? (As I'm sure that's a consideration with the designers of the board game.)
I swear, there are people who would honestly complain that Warcraft 3 was pre-emptively Horde biased because it makes you start as Thrall.
Saikoujin Mar 15th 2012 10:38AM
"Really? Really, people? You're actually getting upset about Thrall being on the $500?"
Oh yes, yes they are.
With the fury of a thousand suns.
Calicia Mar 15th 2012 12:17PM
I don't know what comments you guys are reading, but I don't see people getting all that upset. It's more like eye rolling meta argument than actual rage.
SamLowry Mar 15th 2012 1:52PM
If it's gone meta it's only because the argument has been settled: Yes, the devs are biased.
Josh Mar 15th 2012 10:35AM
What no Lor'themar Theron??
Scuac Mar 15th 2012 11:39AM
Who?
Plainswander Mar 15th 2012 12:02PM
gnomes on EVERYTHING....
