If they added some caveats I could see it working. Sure, a blanket "earn 999,999 gold" would just encourage gold selling. But setting it to "earn 999,999 gold via the Auction House, quest rewards and vendor sales" would be better. And wouldn't even be that much more technically challenging (as they already track at least some of these amounts in game).

I'm sure some 'enterprising' people would find ways to get around these stricter restrictions. But that's true of basically everything in life.
