Hi, Caribald here. Indeed, only hunter's can solo Algalon, and the reason is that the pet doesn't actually get phased, it only gets the Black Hole debuff (a small 10 second dot, ticking each second) as if it were inside. Basically the pet is wherever the master is, so with a pet tank you can stay outside of the Black Hole phase for the entire fight.

Therefore, it's also not entirely correct a hunter swaps pets for the Phase Punch debuff. The debuff doesn't wear off when the pet isn't out, so even with 5 turtles, some would eventually have to take that 5th stack. The pet swapping is simply because Algalon's melee damage is so insanely high that pet swapping is needed for more cooldowns (Cower, 40% damage reduction for 6 seconds. Shell shield, 50% damage reduction for 12 seconds. Last Stand, 30% health increase for 20 seconds (which also means 30% more healing, as Mend Pet heals for a percentage of the pet's total health.))
