I think if things/times were different we might not have reached this point. If he were Warchief already in Wrath he could grow through Cata and more so through Mists. But to go from one world shaking crisis to ...well whatever horrible he does to warrant his removal, I think it's a logical progression of his story, at least.

To be so terrified of his fathers legacy that he wasted away and didn't do anything to potentially becoming just as bad with his bloodthirst, and even somewhat worse because it's not demon fed bloodthirst, is quite a dramatic progression and a not entirely unforseen arc. Sometimes family lines are just cursed like that in classical literature, I like the theme, personally.
