Mists of Pandaria: Yes, you get another character slot
You people are strange. The #1 question we've seen regarding Mists of Pandaria is: Will we get an 11th character slot for our monk? How will I have every single class on one server? Do I need to delete my bank alt?
As initially stated by Bashiok and confirmed by J. Allen Brack, production director of World of Warcraft, you will be getting an 11th character slot for your monk. Players without the Mists of Pandaria expansion attached to their account will be restricted to only 10 characters. You must upgrade to Mists for #11.
Rejoice, fellow nerds. Rejoice.
It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!

Ya. I got my hopes up when GC mentioned 50 toons all on one server. That seemed a bit impractical but 11, which is certainly better than 10, is a bit sobering.

What happened to the plan of 50 characters in total across all servers, with no restriction on individual servers?
This will likely get me downvoted, but I'm disappointed at wow insider or whatever reporters who were there not getting an answer to that question.
From mmo champ:
"A lot of players spend most of their time rerolling characters of every class on a single server. Is there a plan to allow them an eleventh character slot?
Yes there is. For the Mists of Pandaria launch we are going to open up an eleventh character slot so that players can create a monk if they want to, without having to delete one of their existing characters."
Poor reporting, internet reporters. Blizzard had been talking about the 50 account-wide without a server limit for quite some time, and this is a pretty big deal to a lot of long-time players.
(Yes, I'm fully aware that being critical here may get this comment downvoted, but I really feel like both blizz and the press missed the boat on this one.)

I'm going to take a guess here and say that idea turned out to be a lot more complicated than anticipated and current game structure wouldn't support it. The fact that you have to have Mists to get the 11th slot tells me something more complicated is lying below.
Don't give up hope yet. They probably still want to do it, but it seems likely to me that it would take more time than they are willing to give it right now in favor of getting Mists out to us that much sooner.
Kind of like the character models. Still happening, just not right now.

There can't be anything technical. You can have multiples of the same class/race combo on the same server if you want. The reason you have to upgrade to MoP to get the 11th slot is because Blizzard bas decided to keep the arbitrary limit at one slot per class available. If you have MoP, you now have 11 classes available, plus the 11th slot.
This is entirely a business decision. I'm a computer programmer and there is nothing remotely special about the (decimal) numbers 10 or 11. The business of the decision is most likely related to their estimate of the number of accounts they'd lose when people were able to consolidate toons from multiple accounts to the same account.

Makes sense Stillhelm. I was reading about Diablo 3 releases, and how it's being delayed in 3 weeks for Russia and Latin America, completely as a business decision because those versions will be cheaper than the EU/NA versions. And since D3 will be region-agnostic, blizz doesn't want Europe and the US to have access to those cheaper versions.
It would be nice to hear an explanation from the horse's mouth though. I'm guessing that somewhere out there someone on the internet is asking that question to Blizzard, so I bet we'll get an answer within a month, if not sooner.

The new Mists slogan for WoW players: "Ghostcrawler promised me multiple new slots!". :-P
But seriously, I agree with Xabidar and others. After hearing talk of removing the "per server" character slots ceiling altogether, this is disappointing. But I guess 1 extra slot is better than none. Maybe Blizzard realized they could charge a one-off fee for additional slots and make a lot of money.

Kind of a weird and inelegant solution, but by God, it's better than just not fixing the problem at all.
Nynaeve Mar 19th 2012 3:05AM
I'm not sure what it says about me that this is the first item I opened and looked at. But in any case, this makes me extremely excited!
Noyou Mar 19th 2012 3:30AM
It says you are awesome. 11 is cool but 12 would have been preferred. So you could do one Panadaren and one Monk- not necessarily both in one toon. This kind of forces you to do both. But definitely better than deleting a toon to make room.
Skarn Mar 19th 2012 3:05AM
It amazes me THAT was the number one question. It is clearly very popular so who am I to judge?
Incoming complaints that one more per server is not enough. :)
kmarcy1729 Mar 19th 2012 3:07AM
Are they also increasing the 50 character-per-account cap? (Altoholic indeed)

far from fucking "rejoice" but it will do. ghostcrawler's idealogical solution would have been far better.
BadAndyMk3 Mar 19th 2012 3:15AM
So... I can roll a panda, OR a monk, but only both if I make a panda monk?
Skarlette Mar 19th 2012 3:14AM
YESSSS!!! I'd love the proposed 50-character-per-account, as-many-per-server-as-you-can-handle solution, but this is certainly VERY welcome!
Bapo Mar 19th 2012 3:16AM
I really liked the idea of having as many characters as you want on a realm, and leaving the cap at 50(?) characters, but I understand how massive that would be, and feel this is a step in the right direction.
emberdione Mar 19th 2012 3:17AM
Good enough for government work.
Dementron Mar 19th 2012 3:19AM
Woohoo, I don't have to delete Tipwilkin the crossdressing werewolf!
Starlin Mar 19th 2012 3:26AM
But I want to roll a Pandaren and a monk, but not a Pandaren monk. It should be 12. Or 50 like GC said at Blizzcon.
