Mists of Pandaria: Yes, you get another character slot
You people are strange. The #1 question we've seen regarding Mists of Pandaria is: Will we get an 11th character slot for our monk? How will I have every single class on one server? Do I need to delete my bank alt?
As initially stated by Bashiok and confirmed by J. Allen Brack, production director of World of Warcraft, you will be getting an 11th character slot for your monk. Players without the Mists of Pandaria expansion attached to their account will be restricted to only 10 characters. You must upgrade to Mists for #11.
Rejoice, fellow nerds. Rejoice.
It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!

I am strangely depressed at this. I was really looking forward to the server limit being lifted and keeping to the account limit of 50. It makes more sense and you can only have ONE char on at a time per account, so the argument of server crowding doesn't apply. I don't play on other servers and have zero desire to do so. I'd planned on moving toons I have on another account to my main so I can give those slots to my kid and make the account his own. Yes, I have bank alts, 3 of them atm and 9 85s to play to my heart's content. An 11th char slot.....gee, thanks. I seriously hope this will be reconsidered and GC's previously suggested solution put in play. So now those with full 10 slots that wanted to play a monk and a pandaren are restricted to playing a pandaren monk?

I'd imagine it's less server load in number of characters connected than database query times on servers with high populations. I was hoping to be able to do a Tauren monk and a Pandaran *something* without deleting a toon, but it looks like I may just have to server transfer one of my 85s somewhere.
(My bank toon is 85, and my scribe & JC, so she's not leaving my main's server.)

The difference between the same query returning 10 and 50 rows from a set of many thousands (total number of characters on a server) is pretty much not measurable. I'd assume they have separate databases for each server, but even if not, there shouldn't be any significant difference considering the max number returned even if they completely removed the per-server limit would be 50.

I for one am happy that they're giving us this eleventh character slot. While I personally don't fill that many characters on a given realm anymore (I was quite the altaholic back in the day, as friends can attest), I do understand the desire to have more.
It doesn't really help fill the endless sea of desire for some who want to fill out as many possibilities as they can (warrior of everything, troll of everything, etc), but I am content--Blizzard certainly didn't *have* to include a new character slot. I guess if anything I'm happy we know that Blizzard is supposedly limiting characters per server based on the number of available classes (11), as opposed to races (13).

11? What sort of an uneven, misfitting, unpleasant number this is? Why not 12, at least?
Also, it doesn't do the thing for me. I did not even play Goblin or Worgen yet because I didn't have room on my "home" server, and now I get to choose whether I shall play Goblin or Worgen OR Pandaren... most probably resulting in me rolling the Forsaken rogue I always wanted, and waiting for ANOTHER expansion for MORE character slots to come.
Yea, leave it to Blizzard to come with a lackluster temporary solution nobody really asked for, instead of implementing the completely obvious one that would make everyone happy and solve the problem forever. :-P

this is actually the only part of the panda news that i'm disappointed about. blizzard, cmon, open it up to as many as you want per server. do you have any idea how much money you'll make when people like me start server transferring dozens of characters so that their whole stable is on the one realm?

That's... not what I was hoping for. I was actually anticipating resurrecting my old account and transferring the toons over to my newer account (which I started because I had run out of slots to level more toons on the server my friends play on). I'm hardly the average WoW player, though, so I guess I get it.
I'd at least like BoAs to become BoA (not Bind on Server) so my future leveling endeavors won't be completely in a vacuum from my past ones.

I'd have loved 12 slots too, but I know I have a few toons that I'm really not attached to (DK and Rogue) that will allow me some room to play around. I will settle with the 11 given.
While the 50 toons on any server would have been nice, it could be very damaging to high population servers. It would be something to look at perhaps in the future and I can see it being revisited.
JattTheRogue Mar 19th 2012 12:14PM
How would it be damaging to high-pop servers? No matter how many characters one person has on a server, they can only be logged on to one at a time.
tokig0313 Mar 19th 2012 12:41PM
lol yes ok I never looked at it that way.. I looked at it from the perspective of number of toons vs number of active accounts. :P i blame early morning and not enough sleep from trying to read all the MoP stuff

I don't want a Pandaren Monk, and I want a Monk more than I want a Pandaren, so I guess no Pandaren for me. Maybe this is their way of controlling the Pandaren population?

I'm raging about 'only 11' too, but mainly because it's an odd number. The minor ocd in me got happy when I could rearrange characters, so I could sort them alphabetically, by level, by played time, whatever. Now, 11? Oh please 12, don't do 11 to me, I'd almost beg to keep 10 rather than deal with 11.

Already deleted my mage... oh well, I'll just make a new one.

I am continously surprised by people who don't know you can submit a ticket and get a character restored.
Last time it was detailed, you get 3 restores per account (not including restores due to compromised accounts.) Use them wisely.

An additional slot is a good start, and does not mean Blizz isn't still exploring a boarder solution to the mass character issue. It's very possible this is the best to be done within the desired time frame.

Even if I want all 50 of them to be on the same server, there should be no stupid minor technical issue stopping me."
I agree with this 100%. This is exactly the right solution. All characters in a central pool, assigned to servers as the player sees fit.

I would *hate* to delete one of my faithful bank alts. They have worked tirelessly and without complaint all these years behind the scenes to keep Miss Superstar well-supplied as she has rampaged across two planets in the name of the Light.

You know, there is altaholism, and then there's the bid for server dominance. One slot per class on one server? Fine. Wanting all 50 slots on one server? WTF? Are there even enough hours in the week to log in to each one? Do any of you have 10 level 85s on one server? To me, 50 slots total was to allow you to sorta move servers without paying through the nose. You can set up shop on a new server and if it doesn't work out, then the old toons are there too.
Common sense tells me that having 50 toons on one server will just lead people to start name controlling and other crap with the extra slots. Never mind that special characters are no longer allowed in names in the US so you really could have all the good names and never do anything with them.
I'm sorry, but I'm ecstatic to see 11 slots for 11 classes, and if you're really that overboard with it, then maybe you should re-evaluate your playstyle.

"Do any of you have 10 level 85s on one server?"
Yes. Yes I do. Admittedly, the dwarf rogue only made it to 85 for the guild achievements.
