Mists of Pandaria: Yes, you get another character slot
You people are strange. The #1 question we've seen regarding Mists of Pandaria is: Will we get an 11th character slot for our monk? How will I have every single class on one server? Do I need to delete my bank alt?
As initially stated by Bashiok and confirmed by J. Allen Brack, production director of World of Warcraft, you will be getting an 11th character slot for your monk. Players without the Mists of Pandaria expansion attached to their account will be restricted to only 10 characters. You must upgrade to Mists for #11.
Rejoice, fellow nerds. Rejoice.
It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!

Why can't WoW take a hint from Runescape. Your toon shouldn't be tied to a specific server. Why not pick a server to play on when you log in? Yes, there would be some technical details to work out, but this would make life a lot easier!

No offense, but when people say this, they obviously don't have any technical knowledge of how servers work.
Not only are servers in different physical locations (4 for the US alone) but the ability to even connect between those groups didn't exist until a year or so ago. When you enter a cross-realm BG or instance, you are loading into a special server to do that. Those people in other servers outside of your Battlegroup don't even have a direct connection to your server.
If the game had been designed like this from the start, it would be easier. However the servers, the software they run, and the connections between them have been modified and upgraded to allow this, but limitations still exist.

What a bunch of whiners.
They didn't *have* to give us anything. They could have said suck it up and delete a toon.
I have two accounts, BOTH with a full compliment of characters. Adding a slot is fine. Anyone who has time to play 10 toons and is griping about only getting one slot should get a second account if it matters so dang much.

I STILL haven't rolled a Worgen, because I had one of each class alliance side on my server.
I haven't rolled a goblin yet either.
I was really looking forward to rolling a worgen or a goblin next expansion, but now I can't. I have on choice: Pandaren Monk.
I know people horde and alliance side on my server. If I'm going to play wow with absolutely no one to talk to because I'm on another server, I'm not going to play wow.
And it's not as easy as just making "new friends." Friends take a regular time and energy investment, and I can't make that off-server.

As everyone is saying, since they cant roll a Pandaren AND a Monk, we all get to look forward to 10million Pandaren Monks running around come MoP since we dont have any other choice :(

I haven't yet seen anyone in a bid for all 50 on one server, if I missed it, then I'll go back and re-scan. I seriously doubt the majority of people would ever plug all 50 char slots into one single server. Lifting the server cap and maintaining the account cap of 50 gives players the flexibility to choose where and how many per server they wish to dole out their allotment. I personally would be happy with 5 "more" slots to use on my home and only server : two to move the toons from my kid's acct, 1 for another druid to be able to play as the other 2 specs my current doesn't have, and the last two for the pandaren warrior and belf monk I'd planned on rolling when Mists went live. Altoholism? Yes. But not as bad as having one of each class/spec/race. I DO have 9 85s on one server, they all get played and I still have a life. Moderation.
As for the names issue presented, imagination. Use it. I've used name generators entering keywords related to my toon (Elven name gen gave me "Vaire" for my lock, means "weaver" in Quenya and she's a tailor), tracked down supporting character's names from books ("Tolkien's World from A to Z, The Complete Guide to Middle Earth"....yes, I'm a nerd), and used synonyms for ability the toon can do (I had a DK a while back named "Chorea"). Be creative.

Jesus. You see this mess? This is why we get so much dev radio silence. No matter how many qualifiers GC adds to something, people no sooner hear, "Well, what we'd like to do, ideally, is X, but that'd be difficult to get out in time and we're still talkimg about it; no promises!" then they immediately construct a utopian future around that hypothetical best-case scenario and, when reality inevitably fails to live up to that glorious vision, they throw a disappointed fit.
I guaran-damn-tee that if GC hadn't spun out his hypothetical solution and there was no alternate reality out there with 50 alts on one server, the crowd response on this would have been overwhelmingly positive

I almost agree with your final thought, that if GC hadn't said anything at all, everyone would be happy.
However... my immediate thought is - if you can have 11, if you have the technical expertise to unlock the server limit to go up to 11 - why stop there? Why not 15, or 20?
I hate to say it, and I hope I'm wrong, but I'm foreseeing some paid services...
Jyotai Mar 20th 2012 5:50PM
Actually I would -love- to see some paid services.
As someone who bought another 8 slots in Guild Wars, and another 20 or so in City of Heroes, back in the day...
Charge me a small fee, and I will do it. I like alts, and I like lowbie toons, but I don't really care for deleting them...
And even the $25 they charge for a server change these days is only a little more than the cost of a couple of cups of coffee at Starbucks... I don't like doing that daily, its above the 'pocket change impulse buy' - but its not a life-changing decision to spend it.
aaronmhayes Mar 19th 2012 6:48PM
I was just going to delete my rogue.

"You people are strange. The #1 question we've seen regarding Mists of Pandaria is: Will we get an 11th character slot for our monk? How will I have every single class on one server? Do I need to delete my bank alt?"
Not strange at all.
The game's been out since 2005.
I clock in maybe 10-12 hours of WoW a week. A -LOT-, but less than many folks. On weeks where I do less, I do a lot less, as its compressed to a few days.
I'm also one of the slowest levelers I've ever met. I can take months to level a toon, and have guildies that seem able to do it over a weekend (to my sheer amazement).
Plenty of us have way more than 10 toons at max level. I've only got 9 myself, though a few more are in the 70s. And all 9 of those are geared enough for DS because this X-pac's been out too long also...
We really-are- at a point where this is a bit of a make or break situation... We either start deleting, or we just take a pass on the new class. Thankfully, with an 11th slot - we won't have to make either choice. Whether or not my monk -ever- gets to level 90... I still want a monk.
Now I can roll one out on launch day, and then level it when I please, without sitting down now and thinking about which character was getting the ax. I'd already begun moving focus off of two of my toons per faction in an attempt to narrow down the choice of which to delete... Now I can leave my little lowbie alts alone...

I suppose you could use the reasoning of "At least they did something" but the simple fact is that they could not have done less. This is the lowest amount of development work they could've possibly done for this feature, which has already suffered from several years of neglect at this point. So while yes, Ghostcrawler's ideal scenario might have been out of their scope, they didn't really need to cut down to the bottom of the totem pole as an alternative.
Furthermore, arguments of "Blizzard didn't have to do anything" seem to only stem from the fact that they have little to no serious competition in the MMO market. They have every obligation to appease their customer base, and this isn't some sort of cosmetic issue or vocal minority complaint. I personally am disappointed. Not because I didn't get the ideal solution that Ghostcrawler suggested, but the fact that Blizzard did the absolute least amount of development possible on an important feature - yet again.
But I guess some things never really change.
