Warlocks getting a ranged taunt through glyph

Of course, this is far from turning warlocks into ranged tanks, but it's certainly an interesting step in that direction. I'd look at it more as a hunter taunt, however.
And as with all things in the beta, there's no saying whether this will be around next week. But for now, raise the eyebrow at the possibilities!
Glyph of Demon Hunting
Demonic Fury now reduces damage taken instead of increasing damage dealt.
In addition, while using Metamorphosis, Soulshatter taunts your target, Twilight Ward will absorb all schools of damage and Demonic Slash is shorter range and generates fury.

Warlock tanking FTW! I love where demonology's heading!

Brb, rolling warlock.

I don't think this will make locks into main tanks. However, its a good toolset for add range tanking. Think Gluth (Naxx) where a hunter would kite adds in the back. Or Mimiron's head.
This may indicate that kiting adds and add control will be mandatory in future raids. This gives raid comps a choice between Hunters, Frost mages and Demon locks.
Also think of all the fun times soloing old content in Demon form. Boy-oh-boy!

Well now they're just getting my hopes up, only so they can squash them in a future build. Someday Demon Tank... Someday...

Some of the new glyphs are getting my hopes of shockadining(ining) up as well...
Here's hoping we're both pleasantly surprised!

It's actually happening! Tank spec! (And as an option, you can just turn it on with a glyph! Sweet!)

Actually, with Demonic Slash generating Demonic Fury - the resource that lets us stay in Metamorphosis - this may actually allow full-on non-situational full-time warlock tanking.
I may cry tears of joy.

Wow! I really did not expect for this to happen. Really happy for the warlocks it benefits, obviously. They may be dipping their toes in the water, here; if this works, we might see this dabbling turned into a dedicated tanking spec, and that might even extend to classes like Shaman. Again, not likely, but we can dream...

I really like this lock tanking idea, but when you think about it's similar to Feral's hybrid specs which Blizzard wanted to remove. Personally, I love the demonology tanking idea, but it's going to have to be tanking only if Blizzard is going to stick with its philosophy, which isn't bad at all.

"... similar to Feral's hybrid specs which Blizzard wanted to remove..."
Wanted to remove, but finally gave up and just made it so that druids have a full-on 4 specs.
Bodes well for this sucking around, I think.

So clearly, the answer is for Blizz to give warlocks a fourth spec; Demonology can stay a DPS spec, and there can be a spin-off from it that's for tanking.
C'mon Blizz; you said you'd do it for other classes where it made sense, and here's a great place to start. (You know you want to.)

Feral is losing that emergency off-tanking ability in Mists (unless you have a specific talent that no one will get), so I guess someone had to be able to take over that role. This might actually mean that demo will be competitive if they're counting on people bringing them.
Tauren Fan Mar 22nd 2012 8:56AM
If I'm understanding it correctly, it looks like the glyph will gimp your dps and make Metamorphosis a tanking form rather than a dps-boost. Whereas the bearcat could switch back and forth within an encounter and perform effectively in either role, a demo warlock will probably have to choose between one of the other to perform effectively. They can switch the glyph between encounters, but dual-spec already allows just about any class to do this anyway so it doesn't seem like the warlock is getting anything too special in this regard.
It's definitely an interesting experiment by Blizzard, with a single glyph having such a huge impact and effectively creating a fourth warlock spec without a fourth tree. It seems like something similar could have been done for feral druids, but with the established expectations being that they can already tank and dps as feral, there's a much bigger downside if that experiment fails and breaks feral tanking or dps for druids. If it fails for warlock tanking, nobody's going to lose their existing role in their guild or raid team and if it succeeds it is a huge win with potential implications for some other class/specs.

Would be nice to see range tanking make a comeback. Star Wars really botched it by just making it so all tanking abilities were melee range anyways :/
Kyle Mar 22nd 2012 1:29AM
Please let this go live bliz :)

Wow--I was not expecting this! I like the direction warlocks are going and might have to dual spec into demonology. Hopefully there will be some cosmetic glyphs for different metamorphosis forms. And the icing on the cake:
Glyph of Nightmares
Your Felsteed and Dreadsteed can cross water while running and leave a trail of flames.

Warlocks do not need to be able to tank.
Already enough to do just that, and designed to do so from the start.
I may seem to be in the minority here, but I like warlocks as we are, the underdog of sorts and usually a minority.
I do not want us becoming popular because we are suddenly cool.
I do not want to be a wow hipster who played a warlock before they were cool.
locken Mar 22nd 2012 2:06AM
You're acting exactly like a warlock hipster would. To not be a warlock hipster would be to say, "I enjoy playing a warlock, regardless of the popularity of the class."

Sounds like the words of a mage! Pants is that you? Stop your weeping, it will be ok, we will still need food.

Demonic Fury now reduces damage taken instead of increasing damage dealt.
Seems like Demo is now a tanking spec rather than a damage dealing spec. Wouldn't say I'm too pleased.
