Wouldn't this be cool? Garrosh and the Shadow Council

What could send the Horde -- the very same Horde that drank the blood of Mannoroth and marched through the Dark Portal -- into such a fear and concern over their leader? The very same threat that the orcs succumbed to on Draenor, that's what.
Putting the pieces together
One of the fun games that I've been playing over the course of the week was seeing how much interesting information could I pick up from the many fan site interviews to see if anything was revealed through chance. I wanted to get to the bottom of Garrosh's story arc, so I started digging. Oh, how I wish for more transcriptions of interviews ...
MMO-Champion boiled down the extra Garrosh information, snippets gleaned from the off-handed comments by Blizzard devs and story folk, to essentially this: Garrosh has become corrupted and has been doing some really nasty things beneath Orgrimmar. I know, I know, "corrupted." It can mean a lot of things -- and in this case, I think Blizzard very carefully chose the word because it knows the connotation it has with the community and that our expectations will be deceived. Garrosh's corruption will not be external -- it will come from within.
So we know that Garrosh turns into an even more murderous machine and loses more and more of his filter and control as time goes on. We can surmise, anyway. That is how orcs begin their downfall, and it is a classic tale in orcish culture. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Neeru Fireblade and the Shadow Council
A loose story thread from way back in the Warcraft III days is how exactly Thrall integrated the Shadow Council into the new Horde. The Shadow Council are dastardly at best and pure evil at worst. Residing the the Cleft of Shadow beneath Orgrimmar, these orcs still openly practice demonic magics and spend energy and resources holding back out of control demons in the Ragefire Chasm.
Thrall was reluctant to ever do business with Neeru Fireblade and his sect of warlocks that belonged to the Burning Blade. These warlocks, paired with the Searing Blade cultists who eventually took over Ragefire, pose a still-looming threat from within Orgrimmar itself.
Neeru is not a good guy. His story has progressed since Garrosh became warchief, his model was changed in Cataclysm, and he says that his use of demonic magic is purely for the defense of Orgrimmar. Well, isn't that convenient?
Margoz, a shaman in Durotar, speaks of Neeru:
Although he is a skilled warlock, he professes to use his powers to thwart demons, and claims his research in the occult is benign. Be that true or false, we may need his aid against the demonic cult in Durotar.
We needed Neeru's aid at level 10. Garrosh may need it at level 90. Neeru even speaks highly of Garrosh, stating that he would do anything he can to put himself into the good graces of the Warchief and to prove that not all warlocks want to destroy the Horde from within. Remember, not all of them.
A legacy of demons
What if Garrosh enlists the aid of the former Shadow Council to unleash a terrible, demonic power against the Alliance on Pandaria? Garrosh, thinking he is stronger than his father, believes that he can control the power his father succumbed to. Arrogant to the last, the once-great veteran goes the way of the most power-hungry orcs, thinking yourself two orcs too tall.
The orcs remember this. They won't let Garrosh hand them into slavery again -- not even to win this war.

My immediate thought when I read 'corrupted' on MMO-Champion was Demon's Blood as well..

exactly!

I'm going to take this opportunity to say this to you: stop it. Find something else to write about. Speculation isn't news. WoWinsider is supposed to cover news and informative topics.
I for one don't care about speculation, even if you might be right on the money, which you might be. Just let the writers do their thing and come up with something we'll enjoy and don't chop every angle into pieces before it's put together. Forum lurkers do enough of that.
Bottom line is, bring me facts. Facts, not fantasy. Thank you and keep up, the mostly, excellent work.

You are more than welcome to read each and every news article we are currently running. Have you had a chance yet to check out all of our in-depth coverage of the Mists of Pandaria March press event? http://wow.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/wow-insiders-mists-of-pandaria-coverage/
Thanks for reading!

Uhm... have you read any of the Tinfoil Hat articles. Speculation can be fun and for those of us that are lore-nerds debating EXACTLY this kind of thing is what makes WOW sites worth the time.
If you're more fact-oriented than that, fine. It's just one more article you don't have to read. I do mean that respectfully.

You must really hate the tinfoil hat editions of KYL, too.

This is a blog, not strictly a news site. If you just want dry facts go read the blue posts on the official Wow site.
Btw, it's been confirmed that the Siege of Orgrimmar raid will be cross-faction and once you kill Garrosh you will have the ability to permanently turn off your PVP flag and speak all languages. And that's the news....
Now go away. :)

I find it surprising Blizzard has divulged this information at all. I was hoping it would be some kind of secret until the end of the expansion when BOOM after a series of events, Garrosh is evil.
It's like waiting for a new book series to finish before you start reading, and someone tells you the end, and then everyone starts talking about how it ended that way.

"Speculation isn't news. WoWinsider is supposed to cover news and informative topics."
Where the hell did you get that from? This is not exclusively a news site. It's a blog site. At what point do you think you are of the right to tell the people who created and run this site what they should or shouldn't blog about?
icepyro Mar 21st 2012 7:36PM
Let me just state the obvious: read the title. Think about the title. Can you think of any answer to the question "wouldn't this be cool?" anywhere in your life that would contain facts in such a supply as to satisfy the qualification of "facts only"?
I'll let you off easy this time, but really, most of the titles and tags of this site are obvious as to whether it is fact, opinion, or whatever.
Jackwraith Mar 21st 2012 7:37PM
Yes! Bring me facts, not FANTASY about the... World of... Warcraft... Wait. What?
Sir Broose Mar 21st 2012 7:52PM
Although Matt was very gracious with his response, the truth is that this is a blog, not a news site. It's full of opinion, conjecture, and other devices meant to stimulate creative thought, express varied ideas and concepts, and encourage discussion and debate. Part of what the crew has decided to do is deliver as much news as possible, but that is certainly not the extent of the site's purpose.
I think they do a pretty good job of letting us, the readers, know what portions are fact and what portions are creative writing, and there is quite a bit of both. It's not just the tinfoil hat columns; there are also the Breakfast Topics, the Sunday Morning Funnies, the Moviewatch, the Daily Quest, and more that are purely creative writing. Then there are many columns that aren't really fiction, but aren't really news, either: World of Warcrafts, Goldcapped, Around Azeroth, Add-on Spotlight, Reader UI of the Week, etc. These are interest pieces that are meant to be fun, light reading.
I'm not sure why you think this site should just stick to the news and nothing but the news, but that has never been the case, and probably never will be (thank goodness).

"I for one don't care about speculation..." Then skip the articles you don't care about.
"Bottom line is..." you are not the center of the universe. Expecting a site read by thousands of readers to be tailored to your specific tastes is the pinnacle of self-centered behavior. Get over yourself...
Daedalus Mar 22nd 2012 8:12AM
I couldn't disagree more; personally, I'd love to see more of this.
"News" is dull when it's just regurgitated announcements from Blizzard. Add some analysis in, it becomes more interesting. Stuff like data mining takes that one step further. And stuff like this, speculation based what information we have, is why I come to WoWInsider. Sometimes the speculation is right, sometimes it's wrong, but the reasoning behind it really gives some insight onto why Blizzard might do things a certain way, or why they may not.
In this specific case, I really hope Matt's right; if Garrosh is going to be corrupted, I'd really rather it be simply his flawed character succumbing to his inherent flaws in the traditional sense of a tragic hero, rather than yet another example of good guy meets demon/old god/magic and becomes a bad guy.
Good stuff, Matt; and please, keep it coming.
Blayze Mar 21st 2012 7:10PM
I always thought the Horde's ability to field as many troops as they wanted--coupled with the fact that their warlocks still have their heads attached to their shoulders despite Garrosh's issues with his dad sucking at the teat of fel magic--would be awesome if it were explained as the Shadow Council rapid-ageing orcs into warriors like Gul'dan did with Garona and Sargeras/Medivh with Khadgar.
Dreyja Mar 21st 2012 7:14PM
Since I have always loathed the character I'm fine with this explanation. HOWEVER, after reading a lot of the responses to the announcement, I totally see where some people are coming from when they say (in my words), "He's enough of an Ass-Hat to have made these mistakes all on his own." In fact, it could be more interesting to see his downfall come from his own hubris. Mind you, that could still be the case. Many of the corrupted characters of Azeroth got their by their own choices.
Either way I am SO pumped for this fight. I've wanted this since he came into power.
Here's hoping that Vol'Jin and Bain get a swat at him in the fight, which is likely.
Kar On E Mar 21st 2012 7:43PM
Honestly, I think it's going to come from his own hubris no matter what. The only way it wouldn't is if he was being corrupted by an Old God...which I think Blizz has realized is not the be all, end all story idea.
Otherwise, he's just too prideful of a character to not believe that he can take on any challenge himself, be it demon blood or whatever.
Imnick Mar 21st 2012 7:52PM
I personally EXPECT it to be a result of his own hubris but it's certainly too early to say with any kind of certainty
Dreyja Mar 21st 2012 7:57PM
True DAT - both of you. ;-) Hubris kind of defines him as a "person." Between that and his selfish pursuit of his own glory you have a perfect recipe for a down-fall.
