3 reasons for casual players to be excited about Mists of Pandaria

With that in mind, Mists of Pandaria brings a lot to recommend it to our crowd. While it's tempting to give in to scuttlebutt and think this expansion is mostly for the hardcore crowd, I promise that Blizzard hasn't forgotten about its loyal, beloved casual playerbase -- because boy, oh boy, is there a lot for us to love!
This topic comes up this week from reader Angela, who wrote:
I've been reading in forums about how MoP is mostly for the raider and hardcore crowd, that Blizzard isn't catering to 'casubads' anymore. Is there any reason for a full-time worker and mom to care about MoP?
I promise, Angela, there are reasons to care. Let's talk about them.
Pandas and monks, oh my!
The big ticket item for MoP is the addition of pandaren themselves and their iconic character class, the monk. The pandaren themselves look to be a unique, brand new addition to the world with all new lore, interesting stories, and incredible animations. Pandaren have actually been in Azeroth's history for several years, but all of these quests and stories are new additions to WoW. Monks are leather-wearing, butt-kicking, stout-drinking fighters.
The addition of a new class and a new race gives everyone a chance to level up all over again without feeling like you're just grinding through the slog one more time. The achievement counter is reset, the pet counter is reset, and we can spend a month working through our new character. Since it's a brand new race and a brand new class, hopefully the combination will help keep things fresh.
A whole new world
The new world is amazing. Look at the pictures of Mists of Pandaria. Other games are on the market right now with fancy new graphics, but they're just not anywhere near as pretty. The combination of gorgeous, rich colors and imaginative landscapes makes MoP a wonder to behold. Sure, the game engine is a little old, but the artists have created a breathtaking universe with that engine.
I can't wait to get into MoP and start exploring the new world. The temples look inspiring to me. I'd love to plop some of that architecture down in my back yard. Look at it! This world looks lived in and absolutely incredible. More that anything else, I think this new look and feel to the world will make it feel almost like a brand new game.
Zones and questing
When it comes to the depth of content and questing, MoP looks like it will bring abundant new experiences. Your intrepid WoW Insider staff recently attended a press event and had an unparallelled opportunity to talk to the developers. One quote in particular has really stuck with me.
Dave "Fargo" Kosak, WoW's lead quest designer, said, "We didn't just split up zones. We added a ton of terrain. We were developing these little subzones and thought that they really deserved to be their own experience, so we added a lot of terrain to support a robust quest experience, new stories, new characters -- the whole deal."
What that quote means to me is there's a whole new depth of content for us to enjoy and explore, even if we never form up into a raid.
Check it out yourself
Don't just take my word for it, though. Check out this roundup of our Mists of Pandaria coverage. With the new beta beginning, we'll have a lot more for you to explore. MoP is going to be awesome, both for hardcore players and those of us with limited schedules. Stay tuned -- it's going to be amazing.
It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Do they have the monk class enabled for more than just Pandaren in the beta? So that we could try out leveling a monk all the way from level 1?
Zarashir Mar 22nd 2012 2:53PM
As far as i'm aware all pandas will be starting at lvl 1, unless i'm horribly mistaken :S
Naina Mar 22nd 2012 3:01PM
Many different races can be monks in the beta right now, but many of their quest chains are broken or just plain not completed yet.

"I've been reading in forums about how MoP is mostly for the raider and hardcore crowd,"
What forums are you reading? Let's see, MoP is adding scenarios, farmville, pokemon, ... yeah, all the things in every raider and hardcore wishlist.
Magma Mar 22nd 2012 2:11PM
That's what I wondered..What forums has she been reading?
VioletArrows Mar 22nd 2012 2:16PM
You've never sat and watched people endlessly fight the same one pokemon over and over trying to raise the invisible stats for tournaments, have you? It's horrible and the epitome of hardcore.
nutman Mar 22nd 2012 2:23PM
@VioletArrows
Well what does that have to do with this? I don't think the WoW pet system will have the invisible stats you see in Pokemon. It's just taking the basic battle system of pokemon.

@ Violet
Mmm, EV-grinding... And don't forget about breeding to proper IVs and ideal natures, then passing on the right move set, going through dozens of eggs until you get that one perfect specimen. All this is naturally supported by various spreadsheets and calculation programs and such. High level pokemon requires some serious theorycrafting.

Yeah, compared to Cataclysm Mists is as casual-friendly as it gets. Mists is the "lure back the casuals that Cata drove away" expansion.
VioletArrows Mar 22nd 2012 4:40PM
@nutman The point is lots of people tend to think of Pokemon as a casual kiddie game when it isn't, it's an everybody game, and it's surprisingly deep the way suzurambles described. Whether WoW's equivalent will be that deep is not my point, the point is people keep using it as an example of what is casual when it isn't.

Don't forget trying to get just the right Hidden Power and hunting down a rare item (like, say, a Light Ball). But man, watching a level 50 Pikachu one-shot nearly everything in the Elite Four was so worth it...
Chip Mar 23rd 2012 12:09PM
If you're a casual player, you're also probably pretty casual about reading WoW blogs and examining patch notes. A *lot* of the focus is on raiding stuff and it's understandable that someone who doesn't take the time to go through all the details wouldn't know what MoP has for them.
Twowolves Mar 22nd 2012 2:06PM
I am an old school casual player since 2005. I didn't even run my first 5-man until Wrath. As a die hard casual player, I become more excited about MoP the more I learn.
Bynde Mar 22nd 2012 2:54PM
That's weird. I've been playing since late 2005 I think, and my first serious 5-man was Wrath , too. I'm not 'un-excited ' about this expansion. But, it's not doing that much for me so far.
Andres Mar 23rd 2012 7:18AM
I'm with you there, Twowolves. I'm a super-casual player and I still managed to burn through the Cata in-the-box 80-85 content in under two months. It's the first time I've ever seriously considered un-subscribing -- not because i was pissed off (although 2/3 of Uldum are *literally* a joke, and the whole Twilight Highlands experience as Alliance is pretty miserable) but because I was left with a "That's it?" feeling.
I'm hoping all the other fun elements we're reading about will help the meager 5 levels of this expansion feel much richer!
John Robinson Mar 23rd 2012 11:07AM
Gotta agree, completely, with Twowolves and Andres here (although not about nearly unsubscribing).
I love all aspects of WoW. I love raiding, I love dungeons, I love PvP, I love questing, I love achievements, I love pets, I love mounts... I just love content! But, there's only so many times you can do the same content in the same way without getting a bit disillusioned.
Cataclysm was a bit of a let down for end game content, and I burnt through it quick. The new 1-60 experience was great, no doubt, but we can all agree end game content took a hit.
Everything I read about MoP just gets me so excited! It sounds HUGE.
Yesterday when WoW Insider, MMO-C and Wowhead starting posting all of the beta info... man. I have not been this excited for a WoW expansion before.
nutman Mar 22nd 2012 2:09PM
The new zones and questing are a given, but I'm surprised you didn't mention the new additions like the pet battle system or the scenarios which are probably very exciting for everyone including "casuals".
Guapa Mar 23rd 2012 5:58AM
It's been a while since I last heard of the pet battle system so by now I am pretty sure it will go the Path of the Titans and meet with Dance Studio on the Plane of Nonexistence.
Each Expansion had a cool feature that never got implemented, pet battles will be what's missing in MoP.
Is there something to be seen wrt the pet battles in the beta version currently?

Who said it was for raiders and hardcore players only? o_O If anything, there's way more content for the casual player in the expansion than ever before....and it's not at the expense of the hardcore player as well.....FUN FOR EVERYONE! I know, how dare Blizzard cater to everyone! :P
