You can Ctrl-click items to get an in-game preview pane. There's also the MogIt addon (and I'm sure a couple of others by now) that add an automatic preview upon mouseover, and AtlasLoot lets you look at boss drops/crafteds/rep rewards through the ctrl-click preview as well.

As far as tabbing out to a website, Wowhead seems to be -the- go-to site for out-of-game previewing.
