I typically make around 2,000G to 3,000G by level 30 without much difficulty. You are making it sound more difficult than it is. Two things contribute to success at becoming wealthy at low levels: have two gathering professions (preferably skinning and then either mining or herbalism--I prefer herbalism because there are more herbs to be had, skinning is a no-brainer as the mats often sell for more than herbs or ores AND skins are EVERYWHERE) and sell all the mats on the AH. Spend a little time each zone focused solely on farming these too. Beyond that, sell all non-grey items, no matter what they are (one exception: white fonted gear with no stat bonuses), on the AH. You'll be surprised how fast meats, fish, etc. go and any gear will go fast if priced right. Use an auction addon to improve speed at upping things to the AH and always undercut by just a little unless there is a dirth of the mat your selling on the AH, in which case you may get away with pricing it above the lowest bidout price. If you sell all useable items and gear on the AH, whether gathered from questing or instances, and if you use gathering professions regularly you will make A LOT of gold. My toons largely self-fund themselves (though now my high level toons do mail my level 1 beginning alts a small starter fund) and always have the best armor buyable at the AH for their level, enchants, etc.
