Arcane Brilliance: Mage glyphs in Mists of Pandaria

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages -- unless, of course, Christian Belt is sucked into an timeway and is currently stuck fleeing from pterosaurs in the late Mesozoic era, allowing Josh Myers to claim his column. I won't say that's what happened this week, but don't rule it out.
The last time someone who wasn't the most Illustrious Archmage Christian Belt wrote an Arcane Brilliance, things didn't go over well. Part of that might be because it was written by that shady Tyler Caraway character, and part of it was because he secretly was a warlock disguised as a mage. I'm a DPS shaman posing as a mage, but I've got two things on my side: I raided progression as a mage through the latter half of tier 12 and the first half of tier 13, and I'm not a warlock. I'm not going to pretend I'm Archmage Pants, but I'm no squib either. Maybe Senior Understudy or Last Surviving Apprentice Josh Myers?
In totally exciting news, Mists of Pandaria's beta has opened up, much to the chagrin of my social life and my exercise routine. On Wednesday night, Boubouille from MMO-Champion set out to datamine as much information as he could glean from the install files, and thanks to his work, we were able to get our hands on a nice list of the updated glyphs currently in the beta. Spoiler alert: They're pretty awesome.
First thing to know before going into any analysis of the glyphs is that prime glyphs have been totally removed from the game. We're not going to see any more incredibly boring percentage-to-damage increases from glyphs; those are all either removed or baked into the base damage of abilities now. Glyphs now work to either change your playstyle and usage of an ability entirely or to provide cool cosmetic effects. Case in point is the Glyph of Crittermorph, which allows your Polymorph to last for 24 hours and to be cast on multiple targets, provided it's cast on critters. No real game benefit, but fun when you want to make every cow in Elwynn Forest look like a black cat.

Potential major glyphs
- Glyph of Armors Reduces the cast time of your Frost Armor, Mage Armor, and Molten Armor spells by (1500/-1000) sec, and increases the defensive effect of each Armor by an additional 10%.
- Glyph of Combustion Increases the duration of the damage over time effect and the cooldown of Combustion by 100%.
- Glyph of Evocation Your Evocation ability also causes you to regain 60% of your health over its duration. With the Invocation talent, this healing is reduced to 30% of your health. With the Rune of Power talent, you gain 1% of your health per second while standing in your Rune of Power.

- Glyph of Fire Blast Your Fire Blast and Inferno Blast spells can now also spread Living Bomb.
- Glyph of Ice Lance Your Ice Lance now hits one additional target for 50% damage.
- Glyph of Icy Veins Reduces the cooldown and duration of Icy Veins by 50%.
- Glyph of Mana Gem Your Conjure Mana Gem spell now creates a Brilliant Mana Gem, which holds up to 10 charges.
- Glyph of Water Elemental (not currently in Wowhead databases) Increases the health of your Water Elemental by 40% and allows it to cast while moving.
Potential minor glyphs
- Glyph of Crittermorph When cast on critters, your Polymorph spells now last 24 hours and can be cast on multiple targets.
- Glyph of Loose Mana Your Mana Gem now restores mana over 6 seconds rather than instantly.
- Glyph of Momentum Your Blink spell teleports you in the direction you are moving instead of the direction you are facing.

Ah, the beauty of the new physics engine coming in Mists of Pandaria. For everyone who has spun-jump to cast a spell and then accidently blinked toward your opponent, this spell will allow your momentum to carry you through your teleport and get you to where you actually want to go. Isn't science fun?
- Glyph of Ritual of Refreshment Your Ritual of Refreshment spell no longer requires the assistance of other raid members to complete.
All in all, the new glyph choices are cool and definitely more exciting than "Increases the critical strike chance of your Frostbolt by 5%," though they're also all subject to change. And that's not all the salivation-worthy things that have been released this week. We also have awesome new enchants, mega damage, and even those pesky warlocks are finally doing something useful and learning to tank. Seriously.

The problem is timing warlord. And adds. Any fight with adds, you're going to want to spread 'bustion more than once every 4 minutes.
Plus, another button to press more often. Makes it more fun. ^_^

Pyro:
The cooldown is dropping to a native 45 seconds, so glyphed, it'll still only be 1:30.
Still shorter than anything but a t13 4 piece.
Pyromelter Mar 25th 2012 12:29AM
Hmmm I didn't see that change regarding the timing.
from 45s to 90s, that won't make it that much different then.
That's a really strange glyph if that's the case. I kind of don't understand what the point of it is. Giving players a choice of pressing a button more times or less? With that short of a cooldown, it really should be pretty dps neutral.

The benefit to an over time mana gem instead of instant, would be that if played correctly, it would allow you to stay at a slightly higher mana percentage during your burn as arcane, by popping the gem earlier than you would if the mana return was all instant.
This glyph would be the inverse of the glyph that Rets are getting for a doubled Inquisition duration, for 10% less bonus damage.

Looks like there are at least 3 of us to see it that way. Definitely a good thing for an arcane mage, bringing a bit more depth to the to-be revamped spec.

just wondering if i missed something but what happened to the most Illustrious Archmage Christian Belt? He has been MIA for some time now.
Pyromelter Mar 24th 2012 6:17PM
I don't know the venerable Archmage Belt myself, but it's been mentioned in the past that he has an extremely busy work schedule, a wife, and if I'm remembering correctly, at least 2 small kids.
There are times where he gets so busy that I think the thing is he can't even log on to play wow, and I've gotten the impression in the past that him being even able to play wow at all is a minor miracle with the time constraints he has.
And lookie at what gold mine I just dug up:
http://wow.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/about-the-bloggers-christian-belt/
Wife of 11 years, at least 2 pre-teen girls (who knows, maybe his wife had another child in there somewhere?), and I mean look at him on that couch there. Kind of looks like he hasn't had a good-night's sleep since the 1990s. And a nice button-down shirt and pants to me tells me he's probably doing some kind of long-hour corporate work supporting all that.
He's gone through periods where life got super busy and wasn't able to write Arcane Brilliance, but I don't think he'd just cast invisibility, ninja log, and cancel his sub out on us without a warning.

Pyro: he has a boy toddler. Probably around 2-3.
I made a suggestion once about lifting his butt up if he decides to start playing the "peeing on daddy's
face to watch him freak out is fun" game. And a lot of people got upset.
It still is the most effective way to end that game, neither of my boys did it again after they hit themselves with it.
Pyromelter Mar 24th 2012 8:33PM
That makes 3 kids under the age of 13.
I think that calls for cutting of some slack :P.
Oneiromancer Mar 24th 2012 5:59PM
My guess on the mana gem glyph is that it isn't fully implemented. I think I saw another class's glyph that said something like "Your X returns 20% more health, but over 10 seconds instead of instantly." I think they will also do this for the mana gem glyph.
Noyou Mar 24th 2012 6:00PM
Nicely done Josh. You did the column very well. Archmage pants- hope things are going ok with you.

"...and even those pesky warlocks are finally doing something useful and learning to tank."
I guess they finally realized they're really not that good at doing the magic thing, and are trying to find a role for themselves. ;)
Nate Mar 24th 2012 8:07PM
I, for one, fully support Warlock tanking. It means they'll die more.
Stenenis Mar 24th 2012 7:12PM
Having played a mage for 4+ years, and being use to blinking every 15 secs, Glyph of Momentum seems like it'll be more confusing than helpful!
Starlin Mar 24th 2012 9:27PM
Any word on if spell reagents have been removed? Runes, etc.
Quaza Mar 24th 2012 10:08PM
I looked through the spells on wowhead. I still saw reagent requirements, but I did notice a racial limitation (only Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins can cast Teleport: Ogrimmar, for example). I don't have the beta, I can't say for sure.
Ylspeth Mar 25th 2012 12:15AM
Anyone have any idea what will happen to our existing glyphs? Will I just log in one day and they'll be gone?
Pyromelter Mar 25th 2012 12:36AM
The way I remember it working from wrath to cataclysm, for scribes anyway, was that the spell IDs were the same for some glyphs that changed. If it woks like that for the glyphs you've already learned, then what will happen is the Prime Glyph spell_ID that they use to change into a minor glyph, you'll already know.
So for example, the current spell ID for the Glyph of Molten armor is 56382. In Mists of Pandaria, that spell ID will point to the Glyph of Crittermorph. So if you currently have learned the Glyph of Molten Armor, you will already "know" the Glyph of Crittermorph when 5.01 drops.
Check out the number on the spell_IDs:
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=56382
http://mop.wowhead.com/spell=56382
Same spell number, different glyph in cata v. mop.
Again this assumes that the glyph transition works the same way for individual classes as it did for inscription. When 4.01 dropped, spell ID's for creating glyphs similarly changed, so that if you knew how to make a certain glyph, and the spell_ID changed to a different glyph, you automatically knew how to make the same glyph on your scribe.
Pyromelter Mar 25th 2012 12:38AM
Oh as for your actual glyph slots, my guess is that they will be reset, but you'll still "know" all the glyphs you previously learned, so you'll be able to re-assign your glyphs with a fresh slate.
With the huge glyph revamp, I don't think there is any other way they can do it other than to erase everyone's glyph slots and give everyone a fresh start.
dmberreth Mar 25th 2012 2:14AM
If it goes as it is on the Beta - all your glyph slots will be wiped clean. As for the glyphs themselves, if the spell ID stays the same, then you'll have the new glyph in your book. My Paladin has MANY of the new glyphs right now, from the cross over.
