Beta Testing 101: Addons and the Mists of Pandaria beta

As a Mists of Pandaria beta tester, it is important to test the user interface and how it interacts with the game. Here are some tips for dealing with addons and the user interface during beta testing.
Start fresh. My first bit of addon advice for the beta is to start by using no addons at all. Piling on addons at the beginning defeats a lot of the purpose of seeing if the Blizzard UI itself can handle what it is being designed to do. Take a look at the UI in a bare state, see the new features with fresh eyes, and play in that mindset for your first run-through of the content. It's part of your duty, soldier.
I repeat: Start fresh. Believe me. Starting up the beta the first time is sometimes a slow affair. Installing a bunch of addons that don't work will make it load slower or potentially not at all. First, see if your game even loads. Then you can start tinkering.
There will eventually be beta addons. At some point, enough people will be in beta that there will be a demand for beta versions of addons. Plus, addon developers want your feedback, just like Blizzard. Beta categories will pop up on your favorite addon sites.
Remember to use regular addon protocol, even for the beta. Download only from sites you trust, don't run executable (.exe) files, and don't use third-party programs. And of course, don't go to gold selling websites.
Nothing will always work perfectly. Addons and Blizzard's own UI will break. Repeatedly. Don't despair -- it's all part of the process. When your addons break, delete them and reinstall. Don't be afraid to throw away stuff and start over. Nothing here is permanent. In fact, let's move on to a very important point ...
Nothing is permanent. This stuff isn't going to last. Don't worry about permanent decisions. Make decisions based on what is needed and what needs testing versus what you want to keep forever.
Test the new stuff. The misconception is that the beta is for you to check out the new content as sort of a trial for whether or not you should throw down the cash for a new expansion. That's not the point of a beta test.
Test the new stuff. When new dungeons or features drop, try them. Test them. Mess around with them. Click all of the buttons a bunch and see what happens. Is it an easy system to use? Then go to the forums and tell people everything you were about to tell the screen. The UI needs testing just as much as the other stuff, so press those buttons, mash that keyboard, and try to rip it apart at the seams.
It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. Look for expansion basics in our Mists FAQ, or dig into our spring press event coverage for more details!Filed under: Add-Ons, Mists of Pandaria

No problem here. I only use recount and gatherer. When I new patch drops, I go without them for a couple days, if not a week. One day I want to do a custom UI....

Well... according to Blizzard, addons are currently disabled by Blizzard itself in beta. So... while it is good advice and all, I don't have a choice whether or not to use addons. :(

The key thing to remember about any beta test is that it is your one and only free ride to break the game. Find those glitches and bugs that would aggravate you if your playing live. Find those glitches and bugs you really wish Blizz would fix so that people can't exploit them for an unfair advantage. Find the way to GM Island. Also, don't forget... find a way to break the game in fun ways that you hope Blizz won't fix. Remember the STV Deathgrip flight?

And falling off of Dalaran if you tried to get into the barbershop in it? Good times. I remember a guy parked his toon there and just recorded for a good five minutes with Benny Hill playing in the background.

Every time I have to go without a unit frame addon, I struggle. My eyesight is poor so it's hard to see those little skinny bars in the corner of the screen. Blizz's default UI has gotten a lot better over the years though. At least now you can move the player and target frames without any addons, and the party frames have big fat bars by default. I just wish I could make the default font bigger and I could really play with default UI only all the time... probably. :P

You can actually. if you go into the UI settings you can increase the scale. I believe you can also change fonts? It's been a while since I've played with default ui.

Only addon I really have to have is my bad addon. I like all my items right there in one window, I'm so disorganized that I can never keep track of my stuff and have to go searching through each little bag otherwise D:
Except for that I can play the game addon free and have for a while, other ones are just fun to have around; recount, deadly boss mods, mogit, etc.

Interesting typo right there. What could be a "bad" addon? Reads on.... oh BAG addon.
/walks away slowly

Bleeeh, bag addon, right

It's so hard for me to play without a bar addon, namely because I have my rotation abilities in the centre of the screen, so I don't have to constantly watch the bottom of my screen and can watch if I'm standing in the fire. But I guess in beta I wont have a choice :/.

Just to reiterate here :
Addon developers need your help in getting their addons ready for MoP.
There have been a ton of Lua API changes already with this latest patch for the beta (the one that just got pushed recently build 15508)
They are going to need your help in diagnosing/trouble shooting their addons.
The work you do will help them get their addons ready for the eventual patch day addon meltdown. You can help make patch day less of a nightmare for everyone.
So once addons get enabled for the beta find out from your favourite authors how they prefer bugs to be submitted. Some will have a ticket database. Help them out for the good of your fellow wow player :D

In previous beta's there used to be "give feedback on this"-buttons all over the place, but I can't find them. How do I give feedback now?
