The Queue: I need to read more

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mathew McCurley (@gomatgo) will be your host today.
Now that I have a digital device capable of acting as a digital reader, it has come to my attention that reading is fairly easy on devices such as these. I picked up my friends' awesome short story collection as my first piece of digital reading material, and now I long for more. Weird stories are cool.
So help me, dear Queue readers. At the end of your questions about the beta for whichever poor soul has to write The Queue tomorrow (Adam), put in a story recommendation, book recommendation, or any kind of reading material for me to consume. I need to read more, and now's the time to do it. Words.
Stonegrasp asked:
Does anyone know the range on AoE looting? 40yards, 50 yards?
It feels like 15 to 20 yards around the central corpse clump. That's not an exact number, obviously, and I've only tested AoE looting a few times. Suffice to say, if you've played any other MMO out there that has AoE looting, it feels the same.
@MBragiel on Twitter asked:
Which bug in beta do you hope never makes it live?
The only bugs that I've experienced that have been annoying are animation bugs. Pandaren obviously don't have all of their animations in and sometimes default back to standing still with their arms pointed diagonally downwards. These are superficial things that will be fixed by the end of beta. Since we haven't seen the actual continent of Pandaria yet, we haven't had access to the wealth of areas where bugs dwell.
And we haven't even fought the mantid yet! Aaaaaaaaaah!
moobinator asked:
So right now The Wandering Isle is designed around Panderen learning to become Monks, I know its extremely early Beta, but here is my question:
If a Pandaren is to become lets say a Hunter, where does he/she start, do you think they will increase the quest line to include all possible Panderen classes? and What if you make a Troll Monk, where do you learn your Monkish ways? Do you think they will put a monk trainer in each of the starting Zones Seems like it would take away from the Zen like learning of the monks if now they just go Kill Boars for 10 levels.
The pandaren starting experience has a lot of monk flavor (since the race and the class come hand-in-hand, obviously), but each class is on the same mission -- to reawaken the elemental spirits and figure out what is wrong with the giant turtle that you're riding around on. Remember, World of Warcraft is a story-driven MMO, not a class-driven MMO. Monk trainers and quests will most likely be implemented later in the beta into the new starting areas, as they were not currently there when I made my orc monk.
Basically, the quests you do have nothing to do with the class that you are. Your race is more of a unique experience than class at this point, from a starting character's perspective. If you are a troll monk, you will learn your monk ways from the troll starting experience, etc. Think of monks like making a new warrior or priest -- just a new 1-to-90 class.
puntable asked:
Right now, DPS specs can tank or heal vanilla dungeons just fine. Mists will remove many of the healing and tanking spells from the DPS specs. Will this mean the death of off-spec tanking an healing at lower levels?
The common wisdom these days is that the instances from 1 to 60 don't exactly require a spec to do anything difficult. Sure, having a dedicated tank or healer helps, but it isn't the crucial tool for success. Whether or not that actually plays out in practice every time, however, is up for debate. After level 50 to 60, things begin to change as specializations offer more advantages. I don't think the removal of these abilities will take away from the positive experience that lower-leveled dungeons currently exhibit; however, nothing should be too hard in the 1-to-60 content, in my opinion.
@ANevers on Twitter asked:
I am curious as to how long it actually takes to create new player models.
Making new models for WoW is a difficult process because of the legacy issue. We're all familiar with legacy problems with code, programs, etc., but imagine if you had to build a brand new orc or human model from the ground up, and it had to be compatible with everything in WoW currently and into the future.
There are thousands of pieces of armor and weapons that have different model anchor points, texture tweaks, and unique issues to deal with when animated. Now, multiply the work you have to do by eight. Then multiply the work you have to do for optimization of new models and the potential for allowing the old models to be used as well. Will every NPC model change as well? What about special NPCs that could break with a new model? And that's only the tip of the iceberg.
It's a lot of work, especially with so much legacy stuff to deal with.

Do we know, lore wise, how or why the mists around Pandaria have gone away?
VSUReaper Mar 28th 2012 11:12AM
Deathwing ripping a new hole through the mealstrom, the original well of eternity, and upsetting the balance of Azeroth did most of it.
We could also guess that the mists are magic based, and Malygos trying to realign the ley-lines of the planet might have had something to do with it as well...
Boobah Mar 28th 2012 11:13AM
I'd gotten the impression it was yet another side effect of the Cataclysm. It's not all that surprising that it took a while for the Horde and Alliance to notice, what with dealing with the disaster and its architects.
I still think that the whole Zandalari backing of the Amanai and Gurubashi was a distraction while they worked with the mogu to seize power in Pandaria.
Sythini Mar 28th 2012 11:14AM
Deathwing's Cataclysm happened and the mists were gone.
Eternauta Mar 28th 2012 11:18AM
The Cataclysm.
EVOXPISCES Mar 28th 2012 11:24AM
I could be wrong but I think I remember reading that the cataclysm caused the mists to dissipate.
Joe Mar 28th 2012 11:32AM
Okay, I'm going to go against the crowd here and say that I don't recall hearing that the Cataclysm was involved.
My understanding was that figuring out why the mists around Pandaria went away was one of the major story points of questing through the continent.

The mists were not removed by the Cataclysm....
In Charge of the Aspects when Thrall goes on his earth spirit quest and eventually runs into Deathwing, he can feel all the parts of the world, specifically
"Somewhere in the Great Sea was a mysterious island shrouded in mists... "

Actually, it's quite strange they call the xpac "Mists of Pandaria" as the mists are already gone. Like in the "Burning Crusade", we're always too late.
Imho, "Myths of Pandaria" would be a more fitting title. Or "Finally, we're able to see the sun again in Pandaria".

"Sometime in the wake of the Cataclysm, the mists abruptly vanished. Alliance and Horde naval fleets, engaged in skirmishes around the world thanks to the new Warchief’s aggression, suddenly found a new continent where once charts showed open seas. With both factions escalating their feud into a global conflict, the war for Azeroth shifts in a new direction.
Why did the mists collapse at this crucial moment in world history? The answers revolve around the will of the last emperor, and lie at the heart of this strange new continent…."

Lots of room to speculate on this statement, but "in the wake of the Cataclysm" hints to a cause that shaking the earth and blowing lots of it sky-high may have had something to do with the removal of the mists surrounding Pandaria. Hopefully this lore will be fleshed out through quests in Pandaria and the Wandering Isles.

McCurley, I applaud your bug/mantid jokes. For serious.
Readers, I think part of the severity of this tank shortage comes from a lot of available tanks being kind of crap. Plus, sometimes there's a rookie out there who's really trying but just doesn't quite know what to do. This week, I made a (hopefully humorous) primer for getting yourself into the mindset of a tank. Share with someone you know who needs a hand, eh? http://tanknstein.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-to-play-like-tank.html
Q4tQ *readers*: What’s the worst tank you’ve ever had? Share your stories, that we might learn from them!
Saeadame Mar 28th 2012 11:42AM
Honestly, when I think of the "worst" tanks I've had, it hasn't been the ones who were new or bad at tanking, it was the ones who were okay or even good at tanking, but were total dicks personality-wise. My general policy for dungeons is "if we're not wiping on every other trash pull, then we're doing A-OK" - because frankly as a healer who stuck with healing at the beginning of cata, that was really all you could hope for in a 5 man heroic group. Tanks who kick lowish dps - and I don't mean low = 1k dps, this guy is clearly just auto attacking, I mean 10-11k dps people who are just trying to get the hang of their class or don't have very good gear - or blame people in an accusatory way for minor mistakes... THESE are the bad tanks. Tanks who aren't that great at tanking can usually be "fixed" with a few gentle suggestions (eg. "Hm... you're taking a lot of damage at the beginning of trash pulls, maybe use barkskin/other 1min tanking CD just after you pull?" or "Maybe try using Death and Decay to help with threat?"), but "bad tanks" - the dicks - are usually just better left alone.

Sooooo many stories.... so little time. As a healer, it is, of course, always my fault when we wipe. Here's some recent highlights:
* Max level, it would be the guy that let my druid get her face eaten off during a boss fight, and then go out and pull the next mob without checking to see if I was even in the same room. And when the rest of the party pointed out that I wasn't back, he just said "Jeez, I'm not psychic."
* Levelling my shaman through Outland dungeons, I got "WTF HEALER I GOT NO HEALS AT ALL!" I'd been healing fine right up to the point where I got mind controlled by time lost guys he'd decided not to attack, but the big green glowing tether apparently wasn't a big enough clue even after two wipes. He couldn't find his caps lock key the whole dungeon.
* And the DKs that can't hold threat because they're in Unholy presence. It's one button to press, which isn't hard when everyone's trying to point it out to you.
Right after I hit Northrend on my Shaman, I managed to keep a pull from going bad - the tank was on one side of a room, the mage pet was tanking another set of mobs, and I kept everyone up, including Mr. Splooshy. The tank said "Nice healing!" afterwards, and I honestly thought he was just being sarcastic until he repeated it again at the end.

I enjoyed the chart of different tanks
The Dewd Mar 28th 2012 11:55AM
Near the end of Wrath, when everyone I knew was doing things like rolling alts, having cross-faction fun, etc. I queued up as dps on a paladin and got Violet Hold. Our tank managed to get locked out prior to the start. Unfortunately for him, he was a DK - and didn't help debunk the impression that everyone had about idiotic DK tanks.
The WORST I've ever heard of - from a guildmate, was when he was leveling through the BC areas and got a DK tank who zoned in and immediately proceeded to yell "I HAS A BIG SWORD". And had resurrection sickness.

Mike -
As a Melee DPS'er that has learned to Tank in my spare time - I really enjoyed your article.
I don't think I'm a particularly good tank, but... at least I try! I try to get better, try to figure out what I'm doing wrong, and what I'm doing right.
I'm curious about your second chart - one grouping is "Faceroll." Does that mean you classify overgeared tanks as not good? I'm curious, because I'm pretty sure a lot of my success as a tank has come through having a very good set of off-spec gear. Same can be said for my baby warrior tank, who's decked out in all BoAs.
Anyway - solid article, and I agree with what you're putting forth.
Mike Mar 28th 2012 12:13PM
@slim1256 -
Sometimes people faceroll because they outgear the content, or the content is too easy, or their spec is overpowered at the moment. The faceroll that I think makes bad tanks is the kind where people just hit buttons like a madman hoping things happen, lol. If you *don't* have one of those advantages that trivialize content, making your forehead a paperweight on your keyboard isn't going to work out so well. That's what I meant. Glad you enjoyed the article. :)

As a healer (have max level of all 4 healers) the most horrific stories are the attempts to heal tanks who do not understand their class/spec, ie; wrong or inconsistent gemming, reforging, and enchanting.
Examples of this include: stam stacking tanks of any kind, tanks reforging, gemming and enchanting for hit and expertise at the expense of survivability, and tanks who are reluctant (or more likely just don't use) defensive cool downs.
I have seen recently a resurgence of stam stacking tanks in recent weeks....The result of baby 85s gear checking combat table capped pallidans and warriors and heroic progression DKs and Druids, and then having no real idea why the stam is being gemmed for.
When mentoring guildie tanks and healers, I always stress 2 things.
1) Know your class/spec and how it is supposed to tank/heal.
2) Tanks and healers do not have the luxury of not gemming and enchanting their gear! You may get away with if your healer or tank is uber geared and your dps are geared and smart, but if either the tank, healer, or both are not properly gemming, enchanting and reforging the dungeon becomes hard for everyone.
Puntable Mar 28th 2012 12:33PM
Just speaking in general terms, the worst tanks I have to heal are:
1. The ones that act like dicks.
2. The ones geared 100% PVP. It's like shoveling my mana into a black hole.
