The Queue: I need to read more

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mathew McCurley (@gomatgo) will be your host today.
Now that I have a digital device capable of acting as a digital reader, it has come to my attention that reading is fairly easy on devices such as these. I picked up my friends' awesome short story collection as my first piece of digital reading material, and now I long for more. Weird stories are cool.
So help me, dear Queue readers. At the end of your questions about the beta for whichever poor soul has to write The Queue tomorrow (Adam), put in a story recommendation, book recommendation, or any kind of reading material for me to consume. I need to read more, and now's the time to do it. Words.
Stonegrasp asked:
Does anyone know the range on AoE looting? 40yards, 50 yards?
It feels like 15 to 20 yards around the central corpse clump. That's not an exact number, obviously, and I've only tested AoE looting a few times. Suffice to say, if you've played any other MMO out there that has AoE looting, it feels the same.
@MBragiel on Twitter asked:
Which bug in beta do you hope never makes it live?
The only bugs that I've experienced that have been annoying are animation bugs. Pandaren obviously don't have all of their animations in and sometimes default back to standing still with their arms pointed diagonally downwards. These are superficial things that will be fixed by the end of beta. Since we haven't seen the actual continent of Pandaria yet, we haven't had access to the wealth of areas where bugs dwell.
And we haven't even fought the mantid yet! Aaaaaaaaaah!
moobinator asked:
So right now The Wandering Isle is designed around Panderen learning to become Monks, I know its extremely early Beta, but here is my question:
If a Pandaren is to become lets say a Hunter, where does he/she start, do you think they will increase the quest line to include all possible Panderen classes? and What if you make a Troll Monk, where do you learn your Monkish ways? Do you think they will put a monk trainer in each of the starting Zones Seems like it would take away from the Zen like learning of the monks if now they just go Kill Boars for 10 levels.
The pandaren starting experience has a lot of monk flavor (since the race and the class come hand-in-hand, obviously), but each class is on the same mission -- to reawaken the elemental spirits and figure out what is wrong with the giant turtle that you're riding around on. Remember, World of Warcraft is a story-driven MMO, not a class-driven MMO. Monk trainers and quests will most likely be implemented later in the beta into the new starting areas, as they were not currently there when I made my orc monk.
Basically, the quests you do have nothing to do with the class that you are. Your race is more of a unique experience than class at this point, from a starting character's perspective. If you are a troll monk, you will learn your monk ways from the troll starting experience, etc. Think of monks like making a new warrior or priest -- just a new 1-to-90 class.
puntable asked:
Right now, DPS specs can tank or heal vanilla dungeons just fine. Mists will remove many of the healing and tanking spells from the DPS specs. Will this mean the death of off-spec tanking an healing at lower levels?
The common wisdom these days is that the instances from 1 to 60 don't exactly require a spec to do anything difficult. Sure, having a dedicated tank or healer helps, but it isn't the crucial tool for success. Whether or not that actually plays out in practice every time, however, is up for debate. After level 50 to 60, things begin to change as specializations offer more advantages. I don't think the removal of these abilities will take away from the positive experience that lower-leveled dungeons currently exhibit; however, nothing should be too hard in the 1-to-60 content, in my opinion.
@ANevers on Twitter asked:
I am curious as to how long it actually takes to create new player models.
Making new models for WoW is a difficult process because of the legacy issue. We're all familiar with legacy problems with code, programs, etc., but imagine if you had to build a brand new orc or human model from the ground up, and it had to be compatible with everything in WoW currently and into the future.
There are thousands of pieces of armor and weapons that have different model anchor points, texture tweaks, and unique issues to deal with when animated. Now, multiply the work you have to do by eight. Then multiply the work you have to do for optimization of new models and the potential for allowing the old models to be used as well. Will every NPC model change as well? What about special NPCs that could break with a new model? And that's only the tip of the iceberg.
It's a lot of work, especially with so much legacy stuff to deal with.

Reading recommendations:
Salem's Lot
The Stand
Red Dragon
If you are at all interested in writing- even for a hobby, Stephen King's book "On Writing". Very interesting and grounding read.

My reading recommendations:
At least the first 200 webcomics on TopWebComics dot com. They're all great, but may vary depending on your age and preferences, and deserve vastly more support than what they get currently.
If you read any of the comics from the Sunday Funnies, and like them - most of those aren't in the top 200 (I'm pretty sure just Beyond The Tree is, but just barely).
Liyly Mar 28th 2012 12:53PM
I'd recommend reading "The Magicians" and the sequel "The Magician King" by Lev Grossman. I wouldn't call either weird, but they're incredibly creative and some of the best fiction I've ever read!

I got the complete works of HP Lovecraft on my Kindle for $1 a month or two ago.
And though there's nothing "short" about it, the Wheel of Time series is bloody fantastic.
Gosten Mar 28th 2012 11:44AM
Regarding Wheel of Time, the first four books are great, then you slog through about 5000 pages of nothing happening until it finally starts to get a little interesting again.
However, if you're mainly looking for a vast number of words to read, this is perfect.
hwacha Mar 28th 2012 2:22PM
I also recently picked up the complete works :D It's nice to finally be able to read a few pieces I hadn't found in other compilations.
icepyro Mar 28th 2012 2:23PM
ya know, there may not be a lot of epic battles happening, but there is a lot in those 5000 pages. Without them, you miss nearly the entire point of why characters are doing what they are doing.
Now if you care more about what people do rather than why they do it, then this is certainly not the series for you.
And little interesting? I'm not sure you can get more epic than some of the events going on now without falling for the DBZ fallacy of ridiculously overpowered people.

Rick Riordan's Lost Heroes and Cane Chronicles series. Both very good!
Hateraide Mar 28th 2012 11:12AM
No q4tq but read Rothfuss' Kingkiller chronicles. It's one of the most unique and compelling fantasy series of all time and he's only on book two.

I've only read the first book - I'm pacing myself on starting the second book - and it was fantastic.
Really brilliant stuff if you like mature, well-developed fantasy. Recommend++
Catsmeow Mar 28th 2012 12:16PM
I love these books. I picked the first one up on a whim at a borders (sad face), one of the clerks had marked it as a must read and did a good little synopsis on a 3x5 card. That first book was remarkable, it did things with the genre...it made it new again, and I cannot wait for the third.
Stenenis Mar 28th 2012 3:14PM
Rothfuss is not nearly as popular as (I think) he should be. A friend gave me his first book (The Name of the Wind) around when it first came out, and I loved it! It makes for some good high fantasy with more than a bit of a satirical twist (as Pat said on his blog recently, look at the end of Ch. 42).
amkendall@gmail.com Mar 28th 2012 6:29PM
This, this, a thousand times this! These are by far the best fantasy books out there right now. If you haven't read Pat Rothfuss, your literary life is sadly that much emptier. Please do yourself a favor and remedy that ASAP!
Grok Mar 28th 2012 11:15AM
With dual spec available at level 30, offspec tanking/healing is even less of a problem.
As for a great e-book, check out In Hero Years....I'm Dead by Michael A. Stackpole. It's kind of like a superhero film noir.
RogueJedi86 Mar 28th 2012 11:48AM
I love Michael Stackpole's Star Wars stuff. His non-SW stuff any good?
rabidtrebek Mar 28th 2012 12:07PM
Some are better than others, but I have yet to be disappointed by any of his non-Star Wars books. Talion: Revenant is probably one of the best books I have ever read.
slim1256 Mar 28th 2012 12:11PM
Talion: Revenant - agreed.
Also, didn't he write Once a Hero? It's been a looong time, but I recall enjoying it. Maybe it was just the premise, however.
Anyhow - McCurley, you've really done it this time - now there's gonna be no WoW discussion in this queue, as everyone spouts off great books they've read... :P
Puntable Mar 28th 2012 12:40PM
It just discourages players from doing dungeons between levels 15 and 30. Who wants to try and level with a healer spec up to level 30? Unless you are leveling just from dungeons.
Boobah Mar 28th 2012 12:41PM
Yeah, Once a Hero is Stackpole.
I don't think he's a great writer, but certainly a competent one.
And a gamer; he was on FASA's staff (and published novels set in the BattleTech 'verse); he also wrote a trilogy set in GDW's Dark Conspiracy setting.

Q4tQ:
This probably won't be answerable in the near future- but maybe someone in the beta can keep an eye open:
With pets going account bound, will you be able to train and sell pets obtained from quests and get them again? Or just limited to selling pets that can only be obtained through capture/tokens/gold/cash?
Also- If you sell a pet on one toon, does that take it out of your inventory from another toon? Example- I sell my sunflower on my main, does it take it out of my inventory for all my toons, even If I have more than one account wide?
Again, I realize this might not be able to be answered until that full rolls out. Thanks!
