After we received a tip about a bug in Scarlet Halls on the
Mists beta servers, I decided to give it a look for myself. The bug in question, located in the mash-up of the old Library and Armory wings, was actually a door frame that was a tile or two out of alignment, allowing the player to drop through the old monastery and onto an expansive field. A small bump on the horizon indicates that something is off in the distance, so I started running ... and running ... and running. Eventually, I reached some ruins, accompanied by what looked like hand-drawn blueprints for future content. The architecture of the ruins, especially the staircase, could indicate some sort of troll origin. Add to that labels written out for several "jungle zones," and you've got yourself a very troll-friendly area.
I think this is a pretty neat look at the development process; however, I hope it gets patched up soon. Things like this remind me of Alex's article last August
about Z-axis secrets and how discoveries such as this -- unfinished content that wasn't meant for our eyes in the first place -- can lead to both a loss of immersion and higher expectations for future content.
Anyway, now that we've gotten that depressing bit out of the way, you can follow my journey in the gallery below!

My only question is: why are the tauren and human both naked? what did we just walk in on?
Avan Apr 3rd 2012 12:16PM
Those are there for reference to help with scaling.
Shinae Apr 3rd 2012 12:16PM
Har-har. My guess is that the PC models are there for reference, so that the landscape can be scaled correctly.
Puntable Apr 3rd 2012 12:23PM
I would assume they are there as a size reference. You wouldn't want to build a doorway that a Tauren cound not fit through.

Could be worst... Check uldum beta

I suspect they're there for size reference. Either that or it's the secret meeting location for the North Azerothian Man Bull Love Association.

@Ikatsu
Cannot... unsee...

I understand the tauren/human models may be there for scaling. But why must they be naked? what are we scaling here? lol

Because: Why waste data storage on something no one will see. Or is supposed to? Each piece of clothing is storage real estate better used for some other purpose.

Locating unfinished or cancelled content is fascinating. It is in no way immersion breaking. If you forgot you were playing a computer game then I'm not sure what to say.
This kind of stuff can lead to clues about how the game works on a technical level. For example, how Ghostlands and outlands are on the second map while most of Azeroth is on map ID 1.
Ever get outside of map in the underworld section of Cataclysm? Awesome. You can see where they were testing textures and carving out ideas.

For some reason I love things like this. I know we aren't meant to see it but I love getting this peek into the sandbox. Going "behind the curtain" feels eerie and exciting and I wish I stumbled on to things like this firsthand.

You should go explore the Kara Krypts then. Awesome place, just don't let a GM catch you in there. ;)
Dementron Apr 3rd 2012 8:16PM
Room of Upside Down Sinners. One of the creepiest things I have EVER seen.

I was really curious about those "Kara Crypts" so of course I had to go take a look. The place is creepy unlike anything I've ever seen in WoW. It would have made an awesome dungeon.
Nyold Apr 3rd 2012 12:13PM
This is fascinating. I don't think it would lead to expectations of future content. It's not as if they've been holding back on troll content you know. If anything, it gives us a clue about their process and how things look at various stages in the process.
Shinae Apr 3rd 2012 12:13PM
Slartibartfast should be around there somewhere.
Gerbera Apr 3rd 2012 12:29PM
Groovy, thanks for sharing! :D Gotta love those floating trees.
Bill Apr 3rd 2012 12:30PM
Looks like that last one says "Golden Vale."
Pyromelter Apr 3rd 2012 12:44PM
I read it as "Golden Valley"
Bill Apr 3rd 2012 12:47PM
@Pyromelter Yep, you're right. I missed the double 'L'.
