I don't really get pets, and certainly don't go out of my way to pick them up... with one exception. Before I'd even started playing WoW, I knew there was one pet I would have to get if I ever started playing, as it was not only a reference to the greatest show ever, but a reference to one of the greatest -lines- in the greatest show ever: Firefly, and "We're still flying", respectively. Indeed, when I started playing, I grinded the crap out of those fireflies in Zangermarsh for hours, which is the sort of thing I rarely do, but it was worth it. The Firefly pet generally sold for about a thousand gold at the time, which was a fairly substantial amount of gold in BC, especially if you were new, but I used it anyway.
Then I switched to a new main in Cataclysm... and had to grind for another one. Still worth it. Doubly worth it, even: not only was it a Firefly reference, but I was also a fire mage with the title "Flame Warden", and now, through the magic of transmog, wearing fire on my head and fire on my shoulders. So a firefly would be a sensical pet to have.
I'm still sad they lost the "still flying..." tooltip when pets stopped being cast from your bag, though.
