JeffLaBowski suggested this week's Community Blog Topic: Should PvE and PvP continue to be mixed?
Right now we have PvP in our otherwise PvE Timeless Isle. There are also PvP quests to complete for the legendary cloak. And we've long had PvP achievements to complete in order to get the meta achievements for holidays. Most recently, there was the G.N.E.R.D. Rage achievement for Hallow's End and there's the infamous School of Hard Knocks for Children's Week.
Many PvE players roll on PvE servers and only want to participate in PvE activities. If they wanted to PvP, they say, they would have rolled their characters on a PvP server. Personally, I like both PvE and PvP but I must say, I don't like PvP mixed in with my otherwise PvE activities.
On the other hand, I love PvE activities mixed in with my PvP. For example, I loved the old Alterac Valley, where you had time to complete all of the side quests in order to launch the big bosses for each faction. I know that battleground could take hours, but it was a blast to play. I would love to see a BG like the old AV in a future expansion.
I understand that Blizzard wants to encourage us to experience a part of the game that they've spent many development hours on. But I think forcing PvP into PvE quest chains is not the way to go.
Should PvP and PvE be completely separate? Should spells behave differently in PvP so that skills balanced for PvE don't have to also be balanced for PvP? Should there be a third spec specifically for battlegrounds and arenas? Many often complain that their PvE spell will get nerfed because of an imbalance against other players. Separating skills and talents so that balance could be achieved in PvP without affecting the balance in PvE seems like a good idea on the face of it, but would be quite a bit of hard work on Blizzard's side and I'm not sure what the other ramifications would be.
What do you think? Should Blizzard continue to make us sample a little PvP here and there in our PvE activities? If not, do you think separating them completely as far as skills and specs would be a good idea? Do you mostly PvE or PvP? How does that affect your views on this subject?
