We leave the game for lots of reasons: perhaps our friends have stopped playing or maybe we just got bored. For my part, I took a long WoW-break that lasted from Cataclysm to the middle of Mists -- I'd been playing for years, many of my friends had moved on, and the game had been seeming more like work than play. And when I came back, it was because I wanted to play with friends again -- when and where my friends are has always had a big influence on my gameplay.
