The Queue: Battle tags, other classes, lore representation, and best name combinations

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.

This will be my last Queue for the week. Matt Rossi is kind enough to take over while I go out and have adventure.

And by adventure I mean Gandalf. I'm going to pretend I'm Gandalf.

Benjamin asked:

Do you think we'll ever be able to search for characters in the Armory by battletag? Do you think battletags will ever become more relevant than just a more anonymous version of Real ID?

I actually like that Battle Tags are this half way point between Real ID and character names (much like Draknfyre said in the comments). They're a good thing to give out to the public, but not give up so much privacy as your name. Character names are cool too, but with as destroyed as the concept of a "main" has become these days, character names are somewhat meaningless identifiers.

What I'm really looking for in Battle.net is the ability to go hidden. If that happens I'll be much more inclined to give out my Battle Tags, etc...

MandaPanda asked:

What do you guys do when Blizzard makes a change to your favorite class, which renders it unenjoyable? I've re-rolled another class, and enjoy it pretty much. But I still feel like my old class was the primary class for me, and always want to go back to it.

I have a feeling I'm always going to be stuck with this longing.

For a long time Blizzard has been insistent that change is a party of life, and that we need to expect things to be different. There have been a few radical overhauls of classes since the game's release, notably Paladins and Warlocks, but overall most classes have kept the same base mechanical philosophy. Warriors still have rage, rogues still have energy, hunters still have a mana-type thing, etc... Paladins are darn near entirely different in the way seals and judgements work (remember having to re-apply?), and Warlocks' DoTing mechanics are vastly reduced and changed.

With that said, I think people too often place major emphasis on class changes and insist that some minor change to shield block (for instance) is a reason to quit the class. ManadaPanda -- I don't think you're doing this here, but it's something I just wanted to say regarding the discussion in general. A lot of times people just get tired of their current playstyle and need a change. That's what it is with me and my alts. At heart I'm a warrior, but when I see good hunters in action I think "Ooh shiny!" and the grass is suddenly greener on the other side. Next thing you'll know I'm picking up my hunter and going to town.

Back to your question ManadaPanada -- you're doing the right thing. Just grab another class and go with it for a bit. You'll return to your main soon enough.

LostInguist asked:

How common are our classes in wow lore. Are there many many mages druids warlocks priests rogues shaman ... Warrior is pretty obvious or arent footsoldiers and gruns warriors? Or does it differ alot between races? I've read the books and only a few named characters cast spells etc but is it a common phenomenon as in most civilians have a magical friend or is it realy rare and then we as players are the exception?

There's a fair spread of our classes in WoW lore. It's not huge, but there's enough representation. I wouldn't read much into the Thrall-centric nature of most of the stories, either -- while it seems like the Shaman gets the top billing, there's characters of every other class represented at some point.
DeanofWhoop asked:

I've seen discussions on cool guild or character names, but what's the best guild/title combination you've come across? Just saw a blond haired human warrior with the title "the Kingslayer" and the guild "Always Pays His Debts." Too bad he wasn't named Jaime. Maybe one of his other characters is....

This gives me the perfect opportunity to use this picture, which is the best one ever.
