The Queue: Leveling, realm first achievements, Blizzard HQ

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.

Ladyrhees linked this picture in the Queue's comments yesterday, and I had to use it as the header. I laughed.

Props to the original creator -- seems to have gone somewhat viral in the WoW community.

Itsdeeps asked:

how do you plan on leveling come Thursday? rushing to 100 or taking your time? I really wanted to take it slow and soak in all the story, but with the anniversary stuff going on I kinda feel the need to plow my way through... thoughts?

I've already played through most of it all on the beta, so I'm going to blaze through on my Hunter, I think. Then I'm going to take my priest and level much more slowly again, soaking up the story and the feel of the zones. Having an end-game character right away is sort of a necessity in my job, so I can't ignore that.

I really encourage everyone to just go slow. There is no rush -- anniversary stuff is going to be around for a bit. No need to push yourself to extremes.

IanRules asked:

Are all realm first achievements gone, or only the ones for level 100? I thought they weren't going to do any this time around but now I'm not sure.

All realm first achievements are gone now. They are a dead achievement. They are no more. The achievements have gone to the great beyond (or the dark below, whichever you prefer).

I'm personally very happy they've been removed. There was a lot of bad behavior with them, people behaving like complete jerks and meanies. The less opportunities for those actions and attitudes, the better.

Cakewalk asked:

A bit of a strange question this but if you could see ANY one place in Blizzard's HQ where would it be and why? Personally, it would be the Art and Design area. I love that sort of thing and being an artist myself I could pick up some amazing tips!

I'd love to spend a few hours in two places. The first would be at the desk of one of their engineers with unfettered accesses to their codebase. There is code that's well over a decade old, database schemes and structures that are still around using 1990s methodology. I want to see the absolute brilliance of the mess that must be the codebase. I'm sure it's crazy better now, and have undergone countless refactorings, but still, I want some alone time with it.

Second, I want to visit their server control room and just watch. The place looks like NASA and the bridge of the Enterprise. Watching millions of players all at once must be something pretty crazy; I've sat and watched hits come in at WoW Insider and Minnesota Opera when we're having major events, and that's just addicting as hell. I can only imagine what it must be like for WoW itself.
