A week has passed since the last round of hotfixes, but a new batch has been released tonight. Tonight's round includes bug fixes, class balance changes, and more. The Garrison Campaign fixes include:

A Stolen Heart: Azuka Bladefury should no longer be getting stuck in evade mode for Horde characters.

Primal Fury: Completing the quest should now correctly award Thisalee Crow (Alliance) or Choluna (Horde) as a Follower. A fix to award the followers for players that have already completed the quest will be made at a later date.

Socrethar's Demise: Resolved an issue that could cause the banner used to challenge Socrethar to not work correctly.

The full list of hotfixes can be found below.
Continue reading Hotfixes for January 21

Hotfixes for January 21 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 21 Jan 2015 22:00:00 EST.
I've been watching Young Justice again and find it funny that Superboy is essentially The Hulk for the bulk of the first season.

What does that have to do with World of Warcraft? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

KingMarvel asked:

Is the Blackrock Foundry raid in the 6.1 patch? I know this raid is coming out in February but is it simply unlocking or are we getting the new patch?
Continue reading The Queue: Blackrock Foundry and more garrison questions

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, The Queue

The Queue: Blackrock Foundry and more garrison questions originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 19 Jan 2015 11:00:00 EST.

Deep down in the blackest parts of my heart, that place of darkness and hate, I have reserved a special place for the garrison mission Claws, Pincers, and Tusks. It's an irrational, unnecessary level of hatred for something so mundane, but come on. The mission requires a total of 5 ability counters for a mere ilevel 615 chestpiece! It's more difficult to 100% than missions that provide way better gear! That's just unreasonable.

In patch 6.1, Claws, Pincers, and Tusks requires only 3 ability counters: Group Damage, Massive Strike, and Deadly Minions. Beremus the Overseer has been removed from the mission altogether, leaving Tarina the Ancient as your followers' only foe.

Perhaps, when patch 6.1 goes live, I might be able to let go of this hate and feel joy once more.

If you have a stockpile of Iron Horde Scraps, whether that be due to disinterest in transmogrification or already possessing all of the items you want, you'll be able to put them to good use in patch 6.1. While the War Mill and Dwarven Bunker are already a steady source of follower equipment, patch 6.1 implements a daily quest wherein you can trade 25 Iron Horde Scraps for an additional piece of gear.

When you turn in the scraps, you have a choice between an Armor Enhancement Token or Weapon Enhancement Token -- the same items you can earn through select follower missions. That means there is a random element to the reward, your ultimate outcome being anything from a three ilevel improvement via Braced Armor Enhancement to an automatic ilevel 645 via the far more rare Goredrenched Armor Set.

If your garrison has been running a Salvage Yard and War Mill/Dwarven Bunker since launch, you most likely have a stockpile of follower enhancement items already. If you haven't had those running for months, this daily quest will be a solid catch-up mechanic.

On live realms, the training dummies found within the garrison often prove to be a problem for DPS players. With the tanking dummy standing right next to the damage dummy, any sort of splash or cleave damage -- a baseline part of many DPS rotations -- hits the tanking dummy which proceeds to kill the player. The issue renders the dummies effectively unusable for many players who might be interested in practicing their rotation.

On the patch 6.1 PTR, the damage and healing dummies have swapped places. The tanking dummy remains on the far left and the damage dummy is now on the far right. Even if you accidentally hit the tanking dummy with a bit of AOE damage, you're standing far enough away that you won't be brutally murdered by an ostensibly inanimate object.

The patch 6.1 PTR introduces a number of updates to the garrison mission table UI, many of which will be well-appreciated. First, the mission table provides more at-a-glance information about mission rewards without need for a mouseover: ilevel of equipment, the exact number of experience points, and so on. If you do hover your mouse over a mission, a new array of information will be displayed: the ability counters required (and whether you have followers who can counter them) and the mission availability -- that is, how long the mission will stay in your list before it expires. If you have a follower who could counter something but is currently unavailable due to being on another mission, the tooltip will even tell you how long until that follower becomes available. If a mission will expire before that follower returns home, you can quickly and easily make the decision to try that mission with less than 100% chance of success.

The tab which displays your list of followers has also been updated. At the top of the menu, the UI now displays the total number of each ability in your active roster. If you have 7 followers who can counter Powerful Spell, for example, that is displayed at-a-glance. As someone who keeps a spreadsheet of his followers, it's a welcome addition. It's likely I'll still keep my spreadsheet, but having the ability to quickly reference that breakdown will make it easier when it comes to recruiting new followers from the inn each week. Using follower upgrade items has also changed: you no longer click on the item, then click on the character's portrait in the list. Instead, you click the item, click the portrait in the list, and then click on their full-size image to use the item. That change seems unusual -- it adds a redundant step to the process -- but the redundancy might be intended to prevent misclicks.

An image of the new follower tab can be found below; it's a big one.
Continue reading Patch 6.1: Garrison follower mission UI updates

Filed under: News items, Warlords of Draenor

Patch 6.1: Garrison follower mission UI updates originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 16 Jan 2015 16:00:00 EST. The WoW Insider Weekly Recap will return next week, but in the meantime, TradeChat brings us another edition of her WoW Jokes series hosted by her cast of fictional characters. You'll groan more often than you laugh -- but a good groan is sometimes just as good. Be warned: the video does contain some language we would consider NSFW.

Patch 6.1: The heirloom tab and how it works

As we've mentioned previously, the heirloom collection UI (or "heirloom tab") is now live on the PTR. The UI resembles the Toy Box and functions in much the same way: if you have an heirloom item on your account, it will be automatically added to your collection. Unlike toys, mounts, and pets, when you acquire a new heirloom, it will be added directly into your collection with no need to "learn" the item. When you want to equip one of your heirlooms, you click on the item in your collection and the game creates a duplicate of that item in your bags. If you want to get rid of it, you simply throw that item away like a piece of old paper. If you wanted to, you could fill your entire inventory with Bloodied Arcanite Reapers. I don't know why you'd want to do that, but with the new heirloom system, you could.

The system for upgrading those heirlooms doesn't seem to be fully implemented in the current PTR build. While we know heirlooms will be able to be upgraded all the way to level 100, the items for doing so are not currently available on the heirloom vendors. The vendors, Krom Stoutarm for the Alliance and Estelle Gendry for the Horde, sell a variety of heirlooms and the level 90 upgrade items: Ancient Heirloom Armor Casing and Ancient Heirloom Scabbard. The Scabbards don't seem to work at all right now and the Armor Casings don't bring an heirloom up to level 90 as described -- it brings them up to level 85.
Continue reading Patch 6.1: The heirloom tab and how it works

Patch 6.1: The heirloom tab and how it works originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 14 Jan 2015 20:00:00 EST.

Straight to the point: how do you feel about dungeons in Warlords of Draenor? Personally, I think they're solid bits of content -- most of the dungeons are fun, and in a video game, that's praise enough. My only exception to that is Grimrail Depot. I expected the zone to evoke the feeling of a wild west train heist more than it does, which might simply be due to the type of game it is. World of Warcraft won't ever feel the same as, for example, Call of Juarez Gunslinger. The dungeon never feels like you're anywhere but in the stationary depot portion of the dungeon until you fight Nitrogg Thundertower and the trials and tribulations of pickup groups through the dungeon finder saps some of the magic from that particular encounter. Beyond Grimrail Depot, though, I adore Warlords dungeons.

Unfortunately, I haven't been running them very much because they simply don't feel rewarding. The massive item pools means you have a hard time getting items you actually want. And now that LFR is open, you can get better gear more easily and nearly bunny hop heroic dungeons in their entirety. I'd like to see dungeons become more rewarding in this expansion. If not the loot inside of the dungeons, then perhaps giving you a shot at LFR-quality loot from a bag at the end of a dungeon each day. LFR loot is already so ubiquitous it feels like a why not? situation.

I also wonder if simply pulling the daily objective out of the dungeon finder pane and onto a daily questgiver in my garrison might make me feel differently. There's a lot of simple psychology at play in games -- seeing a blue exclamation mark right in my face might compel me to complete it and I'll probably have a good time doing it. Tucked away in the dungeon finder, I will never see it and never remember to queue for a dungeon from which I don't need loot, even if I'll have fun.

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.

I have a mighty long response to today's first question!

Morte asked:

You say "there are more than enough ways to make gold", could you give us a few ideas? I'm having a tough time keeping enough gold on my alts with all the garrison building expences.
Continue reading The Queue: A barn full of cash

The Queue: A barn full of cash originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 12 Jan 2015 11:00:00 EST.

Back in patch 6.0, the plague event drop Haunted Memento was nerfed to provide a random, 15-second haunting, rather than provide a constant ghastly companion. Many who owned the item didn't notice the change ... but those who did notice weren't too happy. The item, no longer able to be acquired, was something special. Why the change? Community managed Bashiok shed some light on the subject:

<img align="absMiddle" alt="" border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.wow.com/media/2010/02/blizzimg4.jpg" style="border: 0px none; padding: 0px; margin-bottom: 3px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 3px;" //>Patch 6.0 and the change to Haunted Memento

It was the #1 source of creature spawns within the game, which was causing server performance degradation, and during launch we changed its behavior as one of many tweaks to help recoup some server headroom. Due to the ongoing demand on the game service (and likelihood of similar demands in future expansion launches) we're not currently planning to revert it to its old behavior.

source

The Haunted Memento being the #1 source of creature spawns is somewhat fascinating -- given the (perceived?) rarity of the item, we were surprised by that spawnrate. Even with the creature respawning every time a player zoned or took a flight point, we wouldn't have expected it to be so significant. The nerf to the item is unfortunate -- especially given reports that the ghost's spawn buff can break players out of stealth -- but it seems necessary given this information. However, if the item does break stealth, hopefully that's a bug that can be fixed.

Another day, another batch of hotfixes. Today's round includes various bug fixes and balance changes, but the big highlight might be an additional change to trapping mobs for the Barn. In addition to the previously announced hotfixes, the following has been added:

Requires a realm restart] Increased the spawn rate and number of spawn points for Direfang Alpha, Ironhide Bull, and Wetland Trampler. This hotfix will be deployed in combination with the hotfix from January 7 to increase spawn rates slightly.

In my adventures throughout Draenor, I've discovered many are unaware of the tents provided by a garrison's Tannery -- even players with Leatherworking as their primary profession. If you assign a follower to your Tannery, they can craft a myriad of single use tents for the low price of 5 Raw Beast Hides. When the tent is placed, players can stand inside of it for 10 seconds to receive a 10% buff to all stats for 1 hour.

While these tents cannot be used in instances such as dungeons and raids, they can be used anywhere in the open world: garrison invasions, trapping elite beasts, the group Apexis quests, or any other non-instanced activity. You can only carry 5 of each type of tent at a time, but they're Battle.net Account Bound and there are 21 different types of tents available. That means you can carry a potential 105 tents per character ... which makes their Unique limitations somewhat pointless.

These tents aren't the most powerful thing in the world, but they're neat items and might provide the boost your group needs to achieve Gold in a garrison invasion. If you have a Barn producing leather, you might as well use some of it for a solid questing buff.

After a long holiday break, we have a brand new round of hotfixes for Warlords of Draenor. Tonight's hotfixes are primarily class balance and quality-of-life changes, along with an extension to the 10th Anniversary event. Some highlights:

Dwarven Bunker/War Mill: Players can now accrue as many Iron Horde Scraps as they want.

Lumber Mill: Players can now accrue as much Timber as they want.

Various Nitrogg Thundertower nerfs in Grimrail Depot

Various rogue buffs

Those are the ones that interest me most, anyway. It will be nice to spend a night stockpiling Timber rather than needing to venture out every few days to replenish my stack of 250. Nitrogg Thundertower was also leaps and bounds more difficult than anything else found in dungeons if you're in a random group.

The full hotfixes can be found below.
Continue reading Hotfixes for January 5

Filed under: Hotfixes, Warlords of Draenor

Hotfixes for January 5 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 05 Jan 2015 22:18:00 EST. This post originally appeared on Massively from Editor-in-Chief Brianna Royce. At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO story last week, you've come to the right post.

This week, a player in EVE Online, most likely someone involved in an RMT deal, managed to kick off the new year right: by getting his unprotected ship and its cargo, $1500 worth of PLEX that didn't need to be transported that way to begin with, blown to smithereens. Is there an MMO Darwin award yet?

Read on for a look at the rest of this week's top MMO stories, though I promise that none will make you facepalm as hard as this one.
Continue reading Last Week on Massively: The fastest way to lose $1500 in an MMO

Last Week on Massively: The fastest way to lose $1500 in an MMO originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 05 Jan 2015 13:00:00 EST. At this point, I think it's fair to say the holiday season has concluded. No, you may not extend it to Valentine's Day. Hopefully we'll see some Warcraft news on the horizon soon. Patch 6.1, anyone?

In recent years, I've stated often that Blizzard didn't pull from the established stable of World of Warcraft characters nearly often enough. They focused primarily on characters from the Warcraft RTS games and, beyond that, only on the few new characters they've selected as "faction leaders." I've always felt that players rarely had real attachment to those characters. The faction leaders often played a part in a narrative outside of the player character; they had their own things happen wherein the player often played a small part, if any part at all. Players become more attached to the characters that play a role in gameplay -- memorable faces and personalities that are a part of the leveling process, ranging from questgivers to vendors. Though there are a few notable exceptions, those familiar faces never returned, with each expansion bringing in a whole new cast rather than utilizing the rich pre-existing world.

I have to give credit where it's due: Warlords of Draenor changed that. While yes, it does commit the same sin of reusing RTS characters for the umpteenth time (and in the most egregious way yet), it's also the first expansion that has pulled from the little people of World of Warcraft's history. Familiar faces from all corners of Azeroth make appearances, some in big ways and some in small, and that is what has driven me to invest in the world of Warlords of Draenor, not the return of the orcish warlords. Let's look at some examples, shall we?
Continue reading An ode to old faces

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Warlords of Draenor

An ode to old faces originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 02 Jan 2015 16:00:00 EST.

The tenth season of Hearthstone ranked play has begun. This month's card back features a draenei theme -- or more specifically, a Vindicator Maraad theme. It's a beautiful card back and a nice counterpoint to the Iron Horde-themed card back from purchasing the Warlords of Draenor Collector's Edition.

As always, you need only reach rank 20 to earn this card back. You can't lose rank until you've surpassed 20, making it a relatively simple goal.

<img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/wow.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/580upsidedownsinners.jpg" style="width: 580px; height: 350px;" //>

We've reached the end of 2014, and 2014 held a special milestone for World of Warcraft: the 10th anniversary celebration. The game has built a rich history in the last ten years. Not just its in-game lore, but the history of the game itself and the community around it. WoW Insider's WoW Archivist has been reflecting on that history since early 2011 and now seems like a good time to revisit the best of the archives.

The Karazhan Crypt One of World of Warcraft's most infamous mysteries among old school players, the Karazhan Crypt is a creepy glimpse of content that was never released.

The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj The world event surrounding the opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj was a server-wide effort, an in-game event the likes of which we're not likely to see again.

Talisman of Binding Shard, the lost legendary The Talisman of Binding Shard was a legendary item never intended to go live -- but it did. Only one person ever received it.

Indalamar the Warrior Numerous items have been named after Indalamar. Most of them use a simple reverse form of the name: Ramaladni. Indalamar was famous in vanilla WoW for his warrior shenanigans, many of which resulted in nerfs to the class. He also shared a guild with that sole recipient of the Talisman of Binding Shard.

Memories of Dire Maul The dungeon known as Dire Maul was the first dungeon to be added to the game after the launch of World of Warcraft. Players who look back on classic World of Warcraft thinking epics used to mean something -- recall Dire Maul, where its rare-quality items outclassed most early epics.

The legacy of Leeroy Jenkins Leeroy Jenkins made a comeback in Warlords of Draenor as a garrison follower. His origins are as ancient as they were viral.

The Corrupted Blood Plague An unanticipated exploit of a boss ability in old Zul'Gurub -- simply leaving the dungeon with a particular debuff -- triggered an in-game epidemic so catastrophic, world governments studied it.

The Emerald Dream, Outland, and other Z-Axis secrets In classic World of Warcraft, there were oodles of unfinished lands hidden away throughout the world -- tucked beneath the world's terrain, meant to be inaccessible. Enterprising players found them, and in some cases, entirely by accident as the game glitched when it couldn't determine a player's coordinates.

Massacre at the Crossroads Let's wax nostalgic about world PVP and the violent hotbed that was the Barrens.

5 years of daily quests In June of 2012, we were looking back at 5 years of daily quests and the impact they had on the game's landscape. Now, going into 2015, Warlords of Draenor has almost entirely eliminated them. Is that a good thing?

Blackrock Depths, WoW's ultimate dungeon Not everyone loved Blackrock Depths, but it may have been the truest dungeon crawl World of Warcraft has ever had. Its vast spaces and myriad of potential paths and activities was beloved by some ... an enormous headache for others.

<img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/wow.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/lokholar-on-bridge.jpg" //>

The evolution of Alterac Valley Implemented in classic World of Warcraft, Alterac Valley once ran for hours on end -- maybe even days. Nary a patch or expansion has passed without Alterac Valley balance changes. Seen by many as a shadow of its former self, we all must admit that a battleground that could stalemate for days could be infuriating.

Vanilla WoW's most hidden questline It's still sometimes rumored that classic World of Warcraft contained quests that no player ever discovered or completed. Given the game's long history of datamining, that's unlikely. However, some quests were far more hidden than others.

A raid exploit compendium part 1 and part 2 As long as players have been raiding, players have been finding ways to exploit them. Some exploits were more blatant than others -- some resulting in guild-wide bans.

WoW's craziest television advertisements Let's be real -- it can't get more absurd than night elf mohawks.

WoW's most terrifying secrets The Karazhan Crypts aren't the only creepy location in World of Warcraft.

WoW in China, an uncensored history part 1 and part 2 The history of World of Warcraft in China is rich in ways quite different from Europe or the Americas. Differences in culture resulted in alterations to select in-game models, a distribution dispute meant a delayed release schedule for certain expansions, and more.

The Martin Fury incident What would you do if you accidentally received an item that could instantly kill anything and everything?

All of this is only a sample of the Archivist and the long history of Warcraft. If you're particularly bored this New Year's Eve, page through Archivists past like we often do -- take in patch notes from patches of old, get nostalgic for those days-long Alterac Valleys, and remember how far we've come.

Garrisons evolved to become a central feature of Warlords of Draenor over the course of the expansion's development. Whether you're Alliance of Horde, garrisons are packed full of little details ranging from the gameplay-essential to the just-for-fun. Join Panser of TradeChat in exploring 39 garrison facts -- and even as garrison-obsessed as I am, there were a few in there that even I didn't know.

While we have no confirmation, we can reasonably expect we'll see murmurings on the patch 6.1 front once the holiday season has passed -- that is, in the weeks following New Year's Day. We know the new blood elf models will be in that patch barring any unforeseen circumstances, but beyond that, it's mostly guesswork. Tanaan Jungle might open in that patch ... or it may come a little later. What do you want to happen in that patch, though?

Personally, I only want more solo-oriented max level content. Right now, solo content is largely the one daily apexis quest and grinding mobs for either more apexis or some not-very-useful reputation. Having the barn in your garrison gives you a few more quests for taming your new mounts, but they aren't very substantial. I have no issue with grinding mobs; I find it quite peaceful. It would be nice to have more variety, though. Whether that be daily quests or a sandbox akin to the Timeless Isle, I'm not picky. Either one is fine by me.

The developers' decision to remove flight from Warlords of Draenor zones was controversial to say the least -- some were fans of the decision and others were decidedly not. We've been without it for awhile now. After having experienced Draenor without it, how do you feel?

Personally, I was a fan of removing flight. Getting my first flying mount back in Burning Crusade was a magical moment, I'll admit. Over time, though, I felt its inclusion detracted from World of Warcraft have a cohesive, meaningful world. It's often said that if you don't like flight, you don't have to use it. While that's true, players are going to use all of the tools available in a video game, myself included. I didn't like flight, but the game had flight, so I wasn't going to intentionally make my experience more difficult than that of everyone else. I stand by that. In general, I'm a fan of a no-flying Warlords of Draenor and continue to be.

There is one exception: Nagrand. Treasure hunting in Nagrand proved frustrating. Those treasures felt like the developers created a zone intended for flying mounts prior to removing them. Trying to use the Steamwheedle gliders only infuriated me more -- I couldn't even see half of the treasures in the game world to know where to aim even though they were on my map. The glider moved too fast for me to look around and spot it. It's entirely possible (and likely) that I am just bad at navigation with those things, but I gave up on getting those treasures and most of them still lay unclaimed. Trying to get them made me rage more than a little, and for the first time, I wished flight was still a thing. I'm also perplexed why they added an item such as Aviana's Feather in the expansion in which they took a stand against flight. With its relatively short 10 minute cooldown, I can use it to get wherever I want to go without partaking in the actual world whatsoever, much like a flying mount. A glider-on-demand is apparently okay, but flying mounts are not. Bizarre, I think.

The northern hemisphere observed the winter solstice earlier this week -- which is relevant to World of Warcraft for one reason: the Snowy Owl. The Snowy Owl battle pet can only be caught during the winter season, which officially began on December 21. If you're looking to get your hands on it, head out to Winterspring.

The Snowy Owl's summer equivalent, the Qiraji Guardling, will be unavailable until June 20. At that point, the Snowy Owl will go back into hibernation.

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.

Today's Queue has little to offer but disappointment, I'm afraid. Between the holidays and the unfortunately necessary delayed publication of The Queue yesterday, we have little material to work with today -- and precious little time, too. Today, I have no answers to offer. Instead, take today's Queue as a place to chatter about your holidays.

Once a player has upgraded their garrison mine to level 2, it contains an often-overlooked pool of water. We think it would be fair to say fishing isn't the most popular of activities in World of Warcraft, and for those who do fish, the fishing shack holds far more allure than a glorified puddle in a cave. However, that puddle yields something of interest to fans of ye olde Savory Deviate Delight: Blind Palefish.

Blind Palefish transform you into a pale orc for 5 minutes. While you can't mount in that form, it does persist through combat, making pale orc raids on Highmaul totally viable. Unfortunately, Blind Palefish are soulbound and Unique (5), limiting how many you can carry around. You don't need maxed (or even high) fishing skill to catch them, but they have roughly a 10% catch rate -- you'll end up somewhere in the vicinity of 50 Crescent Saberfish of varying sizes before you get your 5 Palefish. If you're hoping to fish up anything other than Palefish or Saberfish, you're out of luck; nothing else can be caught in the mine.
SOE announced this week that its post-apoc zombie survival sandbox MMO (do we have an acronym for that yet?) H1Z1 will enter early access testing on January 15th. Like Landmark's beta before it, H1Z1's early access represents a serious test phase, says studio boss John Smedley. Tickets for early entry will run you just under 20 bucks.

And don't forget Massively's ongoing 2014 awards, the first seven of which have already been announced. We're leading up to our MMO of the year on Friday!
