It has not been a good month of WoW in the Moore household. Starting four weeks ago, my internet went down for a good three weeks. Last week, I got in a motorcycle accident. The crash wasn't that bad, but I am now very wary of puddles. Very wary.

This week, we'll be discussing how to create and develop successful arena strategies. Quick aside: I see many players confusing the terms strategy and tactics. Strategies are overarching game plans for how to defeat specific enemy teams. Tactics are specific skills used to accomplish strategies. If strategy is the blueprint to a skyscraper, tactics are the best way to weld steel beams together.

Strategy We can rotate crowd control on the enemy mage and rogue while DPSing the priest after he trinkets.

Tactic The rogue is on Fear diminishing returns, start using Polymorph on him.

My internet is still down. Yes, this has been two weeks of hell. No Google, no easy check on the weather (I have a motorcycle), no instant directions -- and most importantly, no images or videos of scantily clad ... orcs. World of Warcraft has been out of my bloodstream for yet another week.

Having fun in arena is one aspect I don't necessarily need a WoW window open to write about, so we're going to cover some bases that I might have forgotten last week -- namely, how to be a good teammate and encourage a fun atmosphere, and having fun while both winning and losing.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Having fun in the arena, part 2

Blood Sport: Having fun in the arena, part 2 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST.
My internet is down this week (lame!), so I'll be writing about a topic near to my heart: having fun in the arena. I was originally going to write about how to make the best use of your time in WoW when you don't have much of it, but then I thought two things:

Everyone spends time in game differently. Some people like PVE, some PVP, some prefer the auction house, and others (mindbogglingly) enjoy reputation grinding. For me to throw out a list of how to best use your time would be madness, absolute madness.

Considering we are WoW players, making the best use of your time might not be the most well-received article.

We talked last week about finding your PVP playstyle in an attempt to find better partners. People with the same view on how an arena battle should be won usually find themselves doing much better than otherwise. The strategy doesn't have to be necessarily the best strategy or tactics used, as long as everyone is on the same page. I've seen inferior strategies work wonders when everyone on the opposing team is in sync with each other.

While we went over a variety of topics, including offense vs. defense, crowd control vs. damage, and leader vs. follower mentality, I don't believe I've quite done justice to healers or overarching views on arena. So we'll be discussing this for a bit more today, then moving onto something else next week.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Finding your PVP playstyle in arena, part 2

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP

Blood Sport: Finding your PVP playstyle in arena, part 2 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 19:00:00 EST.
I've found one of the most common excuses for not having an arena team is conflicting playstyles with past teammates. While often times these excuses are not really the problem (far too many arena players are self-centered and unreceptive to criticism), playstyle differences can be a factor in not meshing well with certain players.

I'd like to provide you with a few common playstyle differences, my take on which side of the spectrum is generally more popular, which side is generally better, and what I tend toward.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Finding your PVP playstyle in arena

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Finding your PVP playstyle in arena originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 19 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. This has been one of our longer series here at Blood Sport, but that shouldn't really come as a surprise to my regular readers -- I love telling stories.

This week, we'll be covering a hodgepodge of different player types I've encountered throughout my time in arena. It's amazing to me the diversity of players who at look to high-level arena for both a challenge and entertainment. I'll try to stay away from teammates that I've already talked about. All names have been changed to protect the innocent (and the not-so-innocent).
Continue reading Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron, part 4

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron, part 4 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 19:00:00 EST.
Check out part one and part two of this series on allowing others to shape your arena gameplay. I feel like this recent series is a way for me to tell a bunch of stories -- and oh man, do I love telling stories. I've been growing very fond of a well-told anecdote.

Transitioning to another arena bracket (5v5)

If you'll recall from part two, my 3v3 teammates were content with a Gladiator title, while I was not. I told them I would stay on the team as a safety net, but that I was creating a 5v5 for rank 1. Both were very supportive and encouraged me throughout the entire process, even though they did not decide to join in my quest (they were already on high rated 5v5s).

By this time I had a formidable reputation from being high-rated in 2v2 and rank 1 in 3v3. A lot of high-rated PVPers offered me spots on their already semi high-rated 5v5s. Most of the teams used the "weak-link" sales pitch. If you've never heard it, it goes something like this: "Our 5v5 would be rank 1 with ease if it weren't for a single member of our team. But if you replace him, we'll probably go undefeated to Merciless Gladiator." They usually talk a lot of smack on that "terrible" teammate when offering you the position.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Iron Sharpens Iron, part III

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Iron Sharpens Iron, part III originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 20:00:00 EST. Check out part one of this series on allowing others to shape your gameplay. I'm constantly amazed how much wisdom others have for me, especially when I'm usually the most experienced player on the team. Remaining humble and always looking to improve yourself will keep your head in the right place when it comes to arena.

Last article, I explored my past history and what I learned from it before I had any type of accomplishment or achievement attached to my character or name. This week, I'll be discussing what got me into the upper tier of arena -- those of you looking to make the jump might find this article particularly helpful.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron, part II

Filed under: Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron, part II originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 17:00:00 EST.
It's no secret that other people influence our lives. This is a widely understood precept of life, but one that is not often directly tackled. Parents look after their children to make sure they aren't "hanging out with a bad crowd." Nearly everyone has heard or spoken the expression, "It's not what you know, but who you know."

Sciences have been created to study how people affect one another. Sociology and psychology are studies of human interaction. Advertising, marketing, and economics have a firm foundation in understanding influences that we exert on one another -- and this isn't a recent phenomenon. Ancient proverbs speak of men sharpening each other as iron sharpens iron. Skills are honed by the acceptance of constructive criticism.

Arena is no exception. Doing arena with players who are better than yourself will make you a better arena player, and that's what we're going to be talking about today.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron

Filed under: PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Iron sharpens iron originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 19:00:00 EST.
Why does anyone even play arena? Every time we enter, it's a deathmatch on one of five maps. No dragons, no intricate storyline, no phat loot. The same team compositions show up again and again. Titles only last for a season unless you have the drive and ambition to hit rank 1.

It's pretty depressing when you think about it, isn't it?

I'll tell you why we do it: competition. People are naturally competitive. We always want to be better than the next guy, and arena is an outlet for that.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Why do we play arenas?

Blood Sport: Why do we play arenas? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 31 May 2011 23:00:00 EST.
We'll be taking a detour from our guide on how to make a new character for PvP to discuss something a bit different today. I get questions from time to time about a variety of PvP-related issues. I mean, I'm verbose, but I didn't think I could write over 1,000 words on one question, until Veni recently asked:

 C. Christian,

You say that you are at your best when you are being focused in arena, and you barely let your damage slip.

I play a frost mage, and have only enjoyed success up to around 2k arena rating, and one of the areas I feel weak on, is sustaining damage when being focused. I consider myself to be very strong positionally, and mechanically.

Does the ability to sustain damage and remain strong while being focused yourself come from a great knowledge of your oppenents abilities? when you can and cannot get away with that extra cast? or exceptional communication with teammates, knowing when they are going to peel, allowing you to squeeze in an extra nuke.

Regards, a weekly reader

Please check out the last two articles on how to make a new character for PvP, part 1 and part 2. Those articles discuss trying to narrow down which class is right for you before you play it at 85. We all have that friend who levels an alt up to max level expecting to play on it forever and ever, only to abandon it two weeks later. Don't be that guy!

This week, we'll be discussing the most efficient and arguably logical ways of bringing you up to speed on a new character. Keybinds, leveling strategy, and gearing up are important aspects of any class and three of the major traps new altoholics can fall into, especially for PvP.
Continue reading Blood Sport: How to make a new character for PvP, part 3

Filed under: PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: How to make a new character for PvP, part 3 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 10 May 2011 21:00:00 EST.
Please check out last week's article on starting a new character for PvP; we discussed different ways to analyze your own playstyle and alluded to this week's subject of strengths and shortcomings. I asked four important questions about playstyle and gave my answers to the questions; however, because some seemed to be left wanting, here is a little more information on those questions.
Continue reading Blood Sport: How to start a new character for PvP, part 2

Filed under: Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: How to start a new character for PvP, part 2 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 03 May 2011 20:00:00 EST.
How do you know if your class is the right one for you in PvP?

One of the best ways to find out if you really want to play the class is to analyze your playstyle. What are your tendencies as a player? Do you rush in and try to battle it up, even if you're a healer? You might want to try out a warrior or death knight. Do you stay back and try to play as defensively as possible? A mage or hunter might be more suited to your tastes. Perhaps you like to annoy opponents by jumping behind pillars when they switch targets to you -- an affliction warlock or holy paladin might be right up your alley.

Arena has a flavor for almost everyone. I determined long ago that I love to rush in and play as offensively as possible. My first character I ever made in WoW was a retribution paladin! However, I shifted around a bit before discovering the power of warlocks. I stuck with warlock for the longest time because DoTs were incredibly overpowered and it felt like I couldn't die against seven monsters. Deciding to play a class because it was overpowered while leveling was probably not the best decision, and I wish I had thought about PvP more when deciding on a main character.
Continue reading Blood Sport: How to start a new character for PvP, part 1

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: How to start a new character for PvP, part 1 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 27 Apr 2011 16:00:00 EST.
I've spent my time in the skin of many different classes when striving for gladiator. Even though my Cataclysm main has been a warlock for some time now, I've enjoyed the time I've spent on my mage, warrior, druid, rogue, death knight and paladin. While I also have a level 80 hunter, I quickly decided it wasn't for me (not being able to shoot people from point blank range bugged me far too much) and moved on to greener pastures. I have yet to play a priest or shaman in high-level arena, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if I got the urge.

For better or for worse, I know a few things about switching main characters.

My overarching purpose in leveling up each of those classes was to use them for PvP reasons (including my warlock). I'd be lying if I said all my decisions were correct ones; most of them worked out very poorly due to lack of foresight. However, I have learned a few things from personal experience and from watching friends play Chutes and Ladders with alternate characters.
Continue reading Blood Sport: The art of switching characters for PvP

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: The art of switching characters for PvP originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 19 Apr 2011 20:00:00 EST.
Rated battlegrounds -- like them or love them, they're here to stay. While rated battlegrounds aren't perfect, they're definitely a lot of fun and a great way to pass the time. One of the things Blizzard placed a heavy emphasis on with rated battlegrounds, which you may or may not have noticed, is the simple and elegant rating system. The rated battleground (or RBG) system is pretty different than most other systems in the game.

I've been very impressed with it -- so impressed that I believe Blizzard should just copy it for arena. The whole world (of Warcraft) would benefit from making arenas more like rated battlegrounds, at least in this regard.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Arena should be more like rated battlegrounds

Filed under: PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Arena should be more like rated battlegrounds originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:00:00 EST. Our last Blood Sport article featured the first in a two-part series about the strategies of PvP keybinding. You'll probably need to check it out for this article to make sense, seeing as there's lots of confusing colors and everything.

That article had lots comments praising ESDF hand positioning. Listening Music: Radiohead's The King of Limbs. How could I not post a brand new album from the greatest band on earth?

Many (if not most) high-caliber PvPers will speak poorly of players who click in arena or battlegrounds. Keybinds are a tool that many newer players do not take advantage of -- much to their detriment, since keybindings allow the PvPer to keep the focus where it belongs: on the battle at hand.

However, even seasoned gladiators can improve their keybinds by changing the specific keybinds of individual abilities. I have my own personal way of assigning keybinds to class abilities that I want to share with you today. Don't worry, I have lots of color-coordinated pictures via the magical wonders of Microsoft Paint. Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Sport for arena enthusiasts and The Art of War(craft) for fans of battlegrounds and world PvP. Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? C.
Last week, we discussed how to expect victory and be self-critical instead of blaming, as well as the importance of being lighthearted. This week, we'll be discussing a similar topic -- this could easily be part two in our series of successful PvP attitude.

Staying optimistic is much more relevant when "big things" happen. One of your teammates just quit your team after you've been pushing for gladiator for a month? You disconnect against a rival team? Patch notes say that you're being nerfed to the ground? If you've weathered the small storms that have passed by with a good attitude, you'll be much more prepared when tornadoes and hurricanes hit.

Looking at the world optimistically comes much easier for some than others. I've played with partners who can't be brought down, no matter what goes wrong. If we lose five straight, they're still eager to PvP because they believe something good will happen from it.
Continue reading Blood Sport: How to cultivate successful PvP attitudes, part 2

Filed under: PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: How to cultivate successful PvP attitudes, part 2 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST.
Today, we'll be discussing attitudes of successful PvPers. I find attitude a subject I find myself dwelling on frequently. I believe attitude is the quintessential ingredient in not only PvP success, but success in whatever we do. The important thing to remember is that we can change our attitudes, and we do it all the time.

Expect victory

Expecting to win puts you in the mindset to win. My football teammates always used to throw around a phrase that went something like: "Don't play to not lose; play to win." Other than the double negative, the phrase teaches us something very important about expectations and their effect on reality.

The placebo effect and Pygmalion effect have been demonstrated scientifically; expectations shape reality more than most of us give them credit for. In fact, speaking of scientific studies, the entire reason double-blind studies are performed is because of the observer-expectancy effect and its ability to influence the choice of others.

No doubt you've heard of self-fulfilling prophecies. Although these are usually spoken of in a negative light, we can use self-fulfilling prophecies for our benefit and success. If we make ourselves believe we can accomplish a goal, that goal becomes much more obtainable.
Continue reading Blood Sport: How to cultivate successful PvP attitudes

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: How to cultivate successful PvP attitudes originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST.
If I had to summarize Cataclysm PvP in one word, it would be fun. Between the novelty of rated battlegrounds, a very strong emphasis (and success) on balancing classes in PvP, and the presence of a diverse metagame at the top of the arena ladders, this is shaping up to be a great expansion.

We're almost two months into Cataclysm now, and it's been quite an expansion for PvPers. Are there problems? Sure. Is the patch going to throw us for a loop and possibly switch things up considerably? Perhaps. But is the whole of Season 9 miles better than Season 5? You better believe it.
Continue reading Blood Sport: An early analysis of Cataclysm PvP

Blood Sport: An early analysis of Cataclysm PvP originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST.
Welcome to Friday's special edition of Blood Sport! Today we'll be discussing all the classes we didn't get around to last time. Enjoy!

Hunters

Hunters can now use Auto Shot while moving. I have been petitioning for this change for longer than I can remember. This absolutely 100% the most needed change on this entire list of patch notes and the greatest quality of life increase to hunters since the ammunition change.

If the minimum range requirement is removed, I think I will be able to enjoy playing the class again in PvP. I'm pretty sure if someone was standing on me in real life, I could shoot them in the face with a bow and arrow.

Deterrence now provides 100% chance for melee attacks to miss instead of 100% parry chance. This means that attacks that cannot be parried, notably some rogue abilities, can now be prevented by Deterrence, and the hunter will gain the benefit of Deterrence even if disarmed. Needed. If you think getting disarmed was frustrating as a warrior ...

Master's Call now has a 35-second cooldown, down from 1 minute, and its range has been increased to 40 yards, up from 25. In addition, the visual effect is more obvious. Needed. Master's Call is an incredibly important ability for hunters and this will improve their arena representation by a good deal, especially when combined with the other hunter changes (which are almost entirely beneficial in PvP).
Continue reading Blood Sport: The PvP perspective on 4.0.6, part 3

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: The PvP perspective on 4.0.6, part 3 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 15:00:00 EST.

Work warning: NSFW language in video commentary.

I originally wrote an article to go with this video. If you have some time, check out my Eye of the Storm rated battleground strategy article.

After our last video, I got a special request for Eye of the Storm, as it seems there are many different kinds of strategies going around with this particular battleground. So for our second episode of rated battleground videos, I'm bringing you an Eye of the Storm, complete with Ventrilo audio (NSFW language). The audio is quite humorous at times (16:10, I'm looking at you) -- just make sure you're not around small children or your boss.

This is one of the first rated battlegrounds I've done as a human;- I recently realm transferred to Kel'Thuzad and faction-changed to Alliance. In this video, I only have 1,200 resilience and 240 battleground rating. I apologize for my somewhat robotic-sounding voice; I'm going to look at investing in a higher quality microphone some time in the near future.

Hopefully you'll enjoy the video; we were all very surprised with how it ended (as you can tell from the audio).
Continue reading Eye of the Storm rated battlegrounds video with commentary

Eye of the Storm rated battlegrounds video with commentary originally appeared on WoW Insider on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 20:00:00 EST. Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Sport for arena enthusiasts and The Art of War(craft) for fans of battlegrounds and world PvP. Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? C.
Okay, so there are lots of PvP changes in this patch. Lots of PvP changes.

If I had a nickel for every PvP change that this patch has to offer, I would have lots of nickels. I could do so many chemistry tests involving the 28th element. Actually, that's not even true. Did you know that a nickel is made up of 25% nickel and 75% copper? Well, if you didn't 5 seconds ago, you do now. A nickel is three-fourths penny. That's pretty amazing, because a nickel isn't even close to the value of a penny -- in fact, a nickel is worth more than a nickel. That's right, a nickel is worth almost 7 cents right now. Science.

What a weird opening paragraph. I expect some of you to be returning from Wikipedia with a look of amazement on your faces. Yep, sometimes Blood Sport is awesome like that. If I had a penny every time Blood Sport amazed someone ... I'd have three pennies.
Continue reading Blood Sport: The PvP perspective on 4.0.6

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: The PvP perspective on 4.0.6 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST.

Every week, WoW Insider brings you The Art of War(craft), covering battlegrounds and world PvP, and Blood Sport, with the inside line for arena enthusiasts. C. Christian Moore is filling in for Battlemaster Zach Yonzon this week, and does he have a treat for you -- rated battleground strategy!

Rated battlegrounds are a very fun subject to theorycraft strategies for; they're new and interesting. I recorded a rated Eye of the Storm that I originally intended to go with this article, but instead, I'll be bringing you the written strategy now and video later, complete with Ventrilo recording!

If you need a refresher on Eye of the Storm or you're new to battlegrounds in general, Zach wrote a great Eye of the Storm primer.

I've only played Eye of the Storm three times now in rated battlegrounds, although I've been a part of many different strategies from premades in The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. As far as I know, there are <strike>six</strike> seven different ways to play the battleground, although they're lumped into three camps. The three camps are 2v2, 3v1, and 4v0. The numbers are how many towers your team intends on capturing. Each camp (save 4v0) has differing sub-strategies within it.
Continue reading The Art of War(craft): Eye of the Storm rated battleground strategy

Filed under: PvP, The Art of War(craft) (PvP)

The Art of War(craft): Eye of the Storm rated battleground strategy originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sun, 16 Jan 2011 16:00:00 EST.

I was originally going to write this week's Blood Sport on the myriad of PvP changes on the PTR. However, I found myself writing a large amount about one subject, so much that it deserves its own post. Warlocks are losing Drain Mana in Patch 4.0.6. I'll get to the other changes some time soon (Blizzard is still not finished releasing changes at the moment). To summarize what is about to be a very long post, I don't agree with this philosophy.

No sir, not one bit.

Ghostcrawler

We are probably going to remove Drain Mana from warlocks. It is incredibly situational in PvE but causes problems in PvP. This might mean we need to evaluate Mana Burn as well.

source

I'd like to know what kind of problems Ghostcrawler is referring to. I don't know anyone who thinks Drain Mana is an incredibly powerful ability right now. Does it shorten games? Sure. That's the intended effect -- or so I thought, anyway.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Drain Mana's removal and its impact on arena

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Drain Mana's removal and its impact on arena originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 20:00:00 EST.
It's the beginning of a new arena season. Recently hitting 85 myself, I noticed a lack of information about the best ways to acquire PvP gear for my upcoming adventures in Azeroth. Well, I've put together a little guide for you that I hope will aid you in whatever your PvP goals are this season.

Conquest points are the most important type of PvP currency in Cataclysm -- and they're awesome. They're incredibly easy to get, as you only have to win four or five arena games a week to get to the starting cap of 1,343. The average piece of conquest gear is bought for 1,579.4 conquest points, so even if you never break 1,500 rating, you'll be getting a new piece of epic PvP gear almost every week.

Try to save up early for your weapon, offhand, and relic/wand. These three slots are the only pieces of gear that can only be bought with conquest points -- don't make the mistake of buying other stuff with conquest points! You can just get a slightly inferior version of the other pieces via honor, but you might have to wave around that green or blue weapon for a while if you aren't wise about what you buy!
Continue reading Blood Sport: Gearing up for arena, Cataclysm edition

Blood Sport: Gearing up for arena, Cataclysm edition originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST.
I've been with WoW Insider for a year and a few months. I consider myself exceptionally blessed to write about something I love. This past year's Blood Sport has been a wonderful undertaking for me, and hopefully for you as well.

Beginner's guide to arena

Blood Sport featured a Beginner's Guide to Arena that quickly became a seven-part series.

Part 1: How to gear up for arena
Part 2: FAQ and best arena specs
Part 3: Basic class strategy
Part 4: Survivability, conservation, utility, and the differences between each
Part 5: Pressure, burst, crowd control, and the differences between each
Part 6: A glossary of arena terms
Part 7: How to find and keep a solid arena team

Although technically only parts 4, 5, 6, and 7 were written in 2010, it's worth mentioning the other three for the sake of clarity and unity.
Continue reading Blood Sport: The 2010 arena recap

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: The 2010 arena recap originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 18:00:00 EST.
I mentioned in this week's Blood Sport that I'd soon have a video up for you guys. Well, it came sooner than I expected, as everything worked out splendidly. All together, it only took me a few hours to record video, record audio, patch both together, convert files, and upload to YouTube.

For our first PvP video together, we'll be discussing adventures in the Battle for Gilneas with my favorite affliction warlock. This is actually my third rated battleground ever -- in the first two, I was demonology in back-to-back Twin Peaks. The games weren't particularly exciting (we 3-0 capped both games), and there were some recording errors in each.

I don't have any listening music for this one; you can pick your own! If Windows Movie Maker allowed me to throw down an audio track, you'd probably be hearing Deadmau5. However, as a consolation, there is commentary from yours truly for 14 minutes and some change!

In this episode, I talk about:

disparity

10v10 team compositions

Battle for Gilneas strategy

a helpful tactic not many teams are using right now

myself (unfortunately for you, bwahaha)

If you have any constructive criticism, questions, or just things you'd like me to discuss next time, please leave a comment below!

Note: I talk a lot about 15v15 early on in the video to quickly explain even distribution. I understand Battle for Gilneas is a 10v10 and am just making points about distribution and disparity.

It's natural to observe what we're doing with our target (and maybe our focus).

We all started playing WoW by having our character jog up to some oblivious animal and obliterate it with spells or steel. We watched intently as that boar flopped over after we clicked our mouse a few times (or pushed 1,1,2). We then decided we would run straight towards its corpse (shortest distance from A to B is a straight line, after all) and happily right-click to loot some sweet gray sword. Over time, boars became bandits, bandits became basilisks, basilisks became banshees and the banshees became bosses. Eventually, we're slaying dragons and throwing around high fives like they were baseballs.

However, notice throughout this scenario of improving our characters that we're not looking around suspiciously at other players, trying to learn where other enemies would flee to or attack us (or, more importantly, why and how they attack us). Of course, this is to our detriment, once we step inside an arena or battleground.

Side note: That sentence of alliteration took me like ten minutes to write. Do you know how hard it is to think of mythical creatures starting with B? (I came up with beholder and brownie too, but WoW doesn't have many of those).
Continue reading Blood Sport: Seeing the big picture in PvP, part 2

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Seeing the big picture in PvP, part 2 originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 19:00:00 EST. Listening Music: James Taylor's "Fire and Rain." 40 years later and just as awesome.

Whether you're doing BGs or arena, the big picture is the most important part of PvP. Arena and battlegrounds are almost entirely about figuring out what's going on at that time with your team against what is going on with your opponent's team. The players who see where the battle is headed before their opponents will always win that game.

Some members of my team are usually pretty curious about my apparent foreknowledge when it comes to battlegrounds. I call everything out before it happens -- that is, I'll call, "Farm, 4-5 incoming" before the enemy team even spawns. To me, it's obvious that the enemy team is going to head to our farm. To others, this prediction seems like witchcraft or a lucky guess.

The only thing I'm utilizing in this example is an understanding of spawn points.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Seeing the big picture in PvP

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Seeing the big picture in PvP originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 22:00:00 EST. Last week, we talked about some gameplay predictions for Season 9. You know, damage, healing, and crowd control -- that kind of stuff. Listening Music: Bush with Glycerine. I had a hard time picking a Bush song, so I went with a tried and true.

I just got done searching for a past article I apparently never wrote. I could have sworn I predicted something about how Season 8 would pan out, but apparently, I just talked about it with my teammates instead of putting my thoughts into internet words. Oh well. I guess I get to make some fun predictions about Season 9 and then recap them later when Season 10 rolls around. Today's column is about nifty arena addons. Changing up your PvP UI for the better is an awesome way to improve your awareness of what's going on. Having easy access to valuable information can often be the difference between a win and a loss. We'll be discussing the best addons to use for a variety of different aspects within the arena.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Awesome arena addons and also ample alliteration

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Add-Ons, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Awesome arena addons and also ample alliteration originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 22:00:00 EST.
Listening Music: José González's "Hand on Your Heart." One of my favorites.

Vanilla WoW PvP was very fun, even if the top raiders on the server had enough gear to kill you in a global or two. The speed of combat got progressively faster before The Burning Crusade came on scene; a full tier 3 player could change the tide of a battleground by himself easily. Resilience was added to the game to slow down the game -- and it worked! Arena games in The Burning Crusade took a long time to complete, but they were interesting and definitely had depth, even if they made you miss dinner once or twice.

Wrath of the Lich King revamped arena completely by emphasizing burst kills and huge crits. In Season 5, death knights and holy paladins were the best classes in the game because they could sustain damage for periods of time longer than 20 seconds. It was shellshock for arena players everywhere. The 30-minute games we had come to know and love were a thing of the past. Damage was king, and the law was a quick death.

Cataclysm appears to be returning to a Burning Crusade era of controlled arena matches. Giant crits and powerful damage combos are unlikely to be making an exit from arena, but their grip on PvP will be loosened when Deathwing's presence is felt.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Cataclysm PvP is theoretically awesome

Filed under: PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP), Cataclysm

Blood Sport: Cataclysm PvP is theoretically awesome originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 14:00:00 EST. Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Sport for arena enthusiasts and The Art of War(craft) for fans of battlegrounds and world PvP. Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? C.
Listening Music: David Bazan's "In Stitches." If you like slow, trippy indie and haven't heard of David Bazan (or Pedro the Lion), you should YouTube him. These KEXP recordings have come through surprisingly clear.

In my four years playing WoW, I've transferred servers for PvP around 15 times. For some, that might seem like a small amount but for the majority of you, it's probably a really often (and costly)!

Now, please take into account that I play multiple characters and I've happily stayed on some servers for many seasons. Other times, I've only been on a server for a few days -- finding out that your new PvP teammates aren't everything you expected them to be is pretty rough. Fifty bucks down the drain is worse.

So I've decided to write this article on giant red flags that might appear in the transfer process. The warning signs are obvious -- but sometimes only after you've already made your decision and thrown down your hard-earned cash. No one is immune to some crafty deception; even the best of us can bite that golden hook of a tempting offer or a myriad of other reasons for transferring.
Continue reading Blood Sport: Red flags for realm transfers

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: Red flags for realm transfers originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 20:00:00 EST. Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Sport for arena enthusiasts and The Art of War(craft) for fans of battlegrounds and world PvP. Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women? C. Christian Moore, multiple rank 1 gladiator, examines the latest arena strategy, trends, compositions and more.

Listening Music: Kay Pettigrew's beautiful cover of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It's two years old, but still awesome nonetheless.

Recently, players have started asking me, "Where should I transfer before Cataclysm hits?"

There are so many variables involved in that question, it's hard to know where to start. After all, it's difficult to say a single realm name when I know very little about the inquiring individual. Most people like different things in different realms.

I assume the people asking me where to transfer to are probably inquiring about PvP. After I give a few tried-and-true strategies, I usually get asked about arena teams and battleground imbalances. To tell you the truth, I'm not exceptionally knowledgeable about whether Horde wins more Alterac Valleys on Emberstorm/Whirlwind than Alliance. Unless you play on that battlegroup, you probably don't know much about that, either.

Whenever I choose a new realm for one of my PvP alts, I systematically go through a series of checklists. This article is that checklist. If you're wondering about where to transfer for Cataclysm because you have battlegrounds or arena in mind, this article is for you.
Continue reading Blood Sport: How to transfer realms for PvP

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, PvP, Blood Sport (Arena PvP)

Blood Sport: How to transfer realms for PvP originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST.
