Archaeology item descriptions offer intriguing hints of things that may be, without any solid details on the items. Some examples:
  • Bone Gaming Dice Dwarves love gold and dwarves love drinking, so gaming seemed like a natural fit for both. These dice appear to have been carved from sheep bones. What might be dried blood is still visible on the 5 pip.
  • Cloak Clasp with Antlers This clasp is fashioned of lacquered wood carved to resemble stag antlers. On the reverse is engraved the name "Pyramond" in Darnassian.
  • Fossilized Hatchling When you finished assembling this tiny skeleton through some eldritch magic, the little critter sprang back to life. He's a pretty good pet. Since he's a skeleton he doesn't eat much.
  • Wooden Whistle A small whistle carved from oak. It might have been used to summon a pet or mount or possibly used as a child's toy. It appears to have been chewed on by an animal or young dwarf.
While there are just as many nondescript inscription items listed, some have more detail:
  • Cataclysm Reclamation: Blacksmithing Allows you to rewrite blacksmithing plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
  • Cataclysm Reclamation: Enchanting Allows you to rewrite blacksmithing plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
  • Cataclysm Reclamation: Jewelcrafting Allows you to rewrite jewelcrafting plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
  • Cataclysm Reclamation: Leatherworking Allows you to rewrite leatherworking plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
  • Cataclysm Reclamation: Tailoring Allows you to rewrite tailoring plans from once-lost recipe fragments.
  • Felfire Inscription Permanently adds 130 Intellect and 25 haste rating to shoulder armor.Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.
  • Inscription of the Earth Prince Permanently adds 195 Stamina and 25 dodge rating to shoulder armor.Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.
  • Lionsmane Inscription Permanently adds 130 Strength and 25 critical strike rating to shoulder armor.Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.
  • Swiftsteel Inscription Permanently adds 130 Agility and 25 mastery rating to shoulder armor.Can only be applied to your own armor, and doing so will cause it to become soulbound.

Live servers seem like ghost towns and the blogosphere is Cataclysm-obsessed (ourselves included). It's hard not to get excited about new content, but wherever you turn it's talk of the beta, discussion of changes that may never go live and above all, anticipation. But I just want to be able to play World of Warcraft again. Can't we all just shut up about Cataclysm for long enough to run instances? Do raids? Group quests? Anything? Please?

So sound off, readers -- are you, too, tired of the endless hype around WoW's next expansion? Do you miss being able to play World of Warcraft?

It seems to happen to everyone at some point or another: the game's no longer as exciting as it used to be, and your logins become sporadic and finally vanish entirely. You simply have to be there; to see and experience the thing for yourself. But since not everyone could be with us at E3 last week, I'll do my best to give you a sense of the event. And even though World of Warcraft didn't make an appearance at this year's expo, I feel safe in saying that E3 had some gaming goodness for everyone.

It's midnight on a Tuesday and, for many of us, servers are still offline. The woe! The agony! The never-ending boredom! So what's the cure? I propose a steady diet of interesting WoW blogs (back issues of The Daily Quest and the forums on Blog Azeroth are a great place to find them) -- today we'll specifically look at a selection from the lighter side of the blogosphere. They do say laughter is the best medicine, and when you're trying to treat boredom, that's probably right. (And before you have a chance to comment -- yes, some of these links are old. I know! But we haven't linked them before and I happen to think they're rather good.)

Chase Christian (@madsushi): I actually won't be playing anything this weekend; my wedding is on Sunday and I'd like to keep it that way. My favorite in-game reference is definitely the LOST hatch in Sholazar.

All of our weekends seem pretty dull by comparison, and the rest of this week's WRUP is mostly a chain of variously formatted grats of the sort you expect whenever someone dings. However, I think Matthew Rossi said it most eloquently: Hey, grats to Chase! For a dirty rogue and a stinky paladin you're all right. Best of luck to you both.

But, no, seriously, all of WoW.com sends their best wishes to Chase and his soon-to-be spouse. But without so much as a release date to look forward to, patience for the World of Warcraft as we know it is growing thin. Why keep raiding when quest rewards in new expansion zones will do me just as well? How many alts can one really level before the prospect becomes mere tedium? (Especially when those daily Cataclysm screenshots make the revamped old world look so exciting!) But with Blizzard's we'll-release-it-when-it's-done philosophy -- and mind you, I think it's a great philosophy -- we could be waiting an awfully long time before Cataclysm hits. So the question of the day is this: what are you doing while we all wait out Cataclysm?

There's probably a lost warehouse of souls somewhere in game that I hope to find eventually. But some of us, still, are spending an hour here and there in Azeroth.

Though this week's edition of What Are You Playing didn't come with a bonus question, some of the staff did come up with bonus answers:
  • Gregg My bonus answer is, as always, 42.
  • Mat There was no bonus question, but my answer to any question is probably "cherry."
  • Rich My bonus answer is my new favorite show: Dhani Tackles the Globe. Combines travel, culture, food, and sport, plus the host Dhani Jones is very entertaining.
  • Zach My bonus answer to the question is, "I solve them all."

This week's edition of WRUP takes its name from Basil, who kicked off this week's discussion of everyone's favorite mount with some controversy:
Basil Berntsen: I'm not including a pic because all mounts are equal, unless they go faster.
C. Christian Moore: Also Frostheim, WHOA. All mounts are equal? I think not.
BB: Frostheim? Ouch...
Chase Christian: All hunters are the same: their dumb pets pull the boss before everyone is ready, they FD to avoid a repair bill, and when the boss is dead, they roll on any weapon that drops.
BB: Small price to pay, imo. I do way more DPS than you sissy dress wearers.
BB (five minutes later): Wait, you play a rogue, of course. Well, I still... uh... do more DPS... provide better debuffs... can transfer threat better... I can roll on your leather.
CCM: Gah, it's hard keeping track of you hunters, with your ever-changing pets and whatnot.

I think there's only one solution to this problem: a level one battle to the death. But the actual participants might disagree with me. While I wait for them to see this post and sort out their problems, why not look in on what the WoW.com staff is playing this weekend?   • Anne: There are far too many, but I am loving the Diablo Gamer Blanket.
  • Amy: I have yet to pull it off, but I want to use cardboard to create a little windowbox on the windows at one of the law school office suites, then fill that box with packing peanuts. From the outside, it'll look like I've filled the whole office. It's two gags in one -- first when the victim thinks his office has been filled with peanuts, and then when they discover it hasn't! Comedic pranking with minimal cleanup.
  • Basil: My favorite gag is probably my own -- I rick-rolled over 2,000 people this year. I am happy.
  • Daniel: I'll come out and say it: I thought WoW.com did it up right this year, especially with Twilight Insider and Gaga Insider. Love Glue Gunnin' indeed.

I joined William Sims Bainbridge (author of The Warcraft Civilization, which is available in stores today) and host Tom Ashbrook for an hour-long discussion on the meaning behind World of Warcraft.

Can we really use events in WoW predict the future? Is WoW the first real afterlife? Is the game world dangerous and addicting -- or a great place to connect with friends and co-workers?

Wednesday morning the staff went through their usual routine at WoW.com HQ. Which is to say we staggered, zombie-like, to the coffee machine, browsed our RSS feeds, had a nerf gun fight, polished a few articles... and then we realized we hadn't received any reader tips all morning. Was our mail server down? Was the mailing list broken? Had the world come to an end and no one had told us yet? None of the above -- but the day after a patch is very much akin to the turkey-coma that you lapse into after Thanksgiving. All was quiet and peaceful. Raiding isn't as easy as all of the videos on YouTube make it look (well, depending on which videos you're watching). A lot of work, planning, and coordination go into a successful raid. So for today's TDQ, we're not looking at boss strategies but instead we're talking about all the other things that make a raid go.

Because of dungeon finder, we're all PUGging a lot more these days -- for better and for worse. Let's just say that if today's TDQ covered horrible tales from the dungeon finder, it would be ten times as long, at the very least. If you're playing World of Warcraft -- and reading WoW.com -- I can't imagine you aren't looking forward to the oncoming Cataclysm, at least a little. New zones, new levels, new content -- and that razor's edge of fear where you're caught between the worry they're going to nerf your favorite class to the ground (baby) and the hope that the expansion will offer everything your virtual heart desires. It should come as no surprise that Cataclysm is on a lot of bloggers' minds... even when Blizzard isn't releasing very much info. So for today, some musing on Cataclysm and what the future of the game might hold.

Not sure what flowcharts have to do with World of Warcraft? Well, in truth, very little... unless they're World of Warcraft flowcharts, of course. I Like Bubbles' Flowchart Friday inspired me to hunt around for more WoW-related flowcharts -- to the conclusion that there aren't anywhere near enough of the helpful things. So I did what I always do in such situations: I asked the WoW.com team to contribute their flowcharts to the effort. I'll leave you, however, to judge the results. Okay, I admit, we may be having too much fun here.
