I've grown so fond of the commentary and insults that it's difficult for me to tell you that today is my last day at WoW Insider. I've received an opportunity to work in machinima that will allow me to help machinimators in a whole new way. However, my replacement, Natalie Mootz, is an excellent blogger and I'm sure she'll make you proud! I'll miss you guys.

Instead of being overly sappy, I thought I'd do a top five list of my favorite machinimas and scandals:
  1. Here Without You - This love story is three and a half years old, but has stood the test of time.
  2. First of May - This extremely not-safe-for-work video caused a riot on Valentine's Day!
  3. Thaenor Chronicles: Chapter One - The only movie where I've been accused of ruining a PR campaign.
  4. Tunasushi - The time I accidentally blogged a movie with questionable subliminal images.
  5. How to Paladin: Insanity Remix - I honestly have no words to even describe this video ...
  6. 9 Crimes - A bonus video that was blogged before I got to WoW Insider, but touched me nonetheless.

However, Tryton appears to still be in it, so I'll humor the fans that are still letting go ...

He attempted to make a feature movie out of Dragonball Z, but tired of it. Instead, he took some of his favorite scenes from his effort and turned it into a trailer. In it, you can expect shiny colors, balls, and ... more balls ...

The resulting timelapse is a journey from roughly level 20, all the way up to level 70. He worked his way from level 70 blues, and then progressed into S1 and S2 items. Due to the upcoming release of Wrath of the Lich King, he doesn't plan to get anymore upgrades, but the video is still pretty interesting!

First there was the Harvest Festival, then Talk Like a Pirate Day, and now, Brewfest. Players are invited to kick back and relax with their friends while they participate in fun activities related to the alcoholic beverage we know and love -- beer.

Some of the festivities include the Dark Iron Dwarves, racing rams, and beer goggles. While the special mounts are rare drops now, it doesn't hurt to get out your stein and have a good time trying to get it. If you fail, well, you're still drinking, so that's a plus!

Spiffworld be no stranger to controversy, havin' been a key player in the V-Day Riot o' '08 (Very NSFW). However, comparatively, this music video looks like a Disney film. If you enjoy Seamen everywhere, though, then you'll definitely get a kick out of it. Arrrrrr!

At the beginning of last month, I featured a video that explored levels 70-77 of the Wrath of the Lich King beta. It was apparently so popular that Muffins was contacted by a studio for a possible job! Since then, she realized that machinima was something that she wanted to do with her life. Nothing makes me happier than when someone says that, so congratulations, Muffins!

Muffins obviously only covered a portion of the levels last time, so she's back with an exploration video for the 77-80 crowd. In it, she checks out Storm Peaks, Halls of Lightning (Instance), The Oculus (Instance), Utgarde Pinnacle (Instance), The Culling of Stratholme (Instance), and Icecrown. She noted that The Violet Eye in Dalaran seemed like a less interesting version of Black Morass, and that Naxxramas was pretty much the same as the old one except for the trash.

However, Kampftrinker seems to think he's going for the last goodbye. He released this homage to his friends, and guildmates at Kampftrinker Ironforge, as a way to share the memories with them.

While there's nothing particularly outstanding about this video, it's not horrible either. It serves to remind us that friendship is important, even if it's in an MMO. If you're interested in knowing what the end credit text says, check out his Warcraftmovies page.

What follows is the bizarre tale, machinimated by Hamfist Productions, of adjusting to his new position, with strangely voice acted characters and even weirder dialogue. It's not too shabby, though!

Inspired by Baron Soosdon, first time machinimator, Buzz Dawson, learned to make machinima in just three days with not only World of Warcraft, but also F.E.A.R. He even bought the editing program, Sony Vegas 9, just for this project, which is quite ambitious for an inaugural effort. The result of his educational experiment, Devour, a music video for the song by Shinedown, isn't a literal interpretation, employs creative use of the L70ETC character models, and contains some great cut scenes.

While I wish WoW was featured a bit more prominently, for a new effort, this is fantastic. The aspect ratio doesn't jump, the characters don't randomly fade in and out, and the transitions are fairly smooth. What say you, (constructively) critical commenters?

The original song was roughly 30-45 seconds, yet Ilcyra apparently set it on an incessant loop to make it a whopping eight times longer. Do you really love the load screen that much? What about moonkin fluff? I found my eyes glazing over at this love-fest gone bad.

Don't get me wrong. The video isn't that horrible, and neither is her voice. However, 4:39 is a bit overzealous, especially when the last minute of it is a guy jumping around for no reason. My advice would be to make an ordered list of the things that you love, and only sing about the first 20!

While I would have much rather seen a video devoted to my not-so-secret crush, Hat the Singing Turtle, it's good to have the old Oxhorn back.

When Lt. Col. Virtue's vigilante justice gets out of hand, the Mighty Morphin' Midget Gnomes are called in to save the day. However, they begin to question their orders when they realize that the Lt. is actually doing the world a favor. Will they be able to carry out their mission?

Not only did Nathan Allen Pinard do his usual sound design for Oxhorn, he voiced a couple of roles! Be sure to stick around for the credits, which aren't a Rickroll this time. I promise!

The result is an action-packed artistic gameplay video, with a heavy soundtrack, that shows off the highlights of this dungeon of yesteryear. Chronicles of Nightfall - Prologue was meant to be an introduction to a series, but it doesn't really explain much in the video itself. According to Ivanzoe's explanation, we're looking at Rederik Aileron, Captain of the Stormwind Militia, coming home after a day of fixing his blades in Ironforge. We see him riding through a bustling town, crossing the bridge, and ultimately, coming home to his wife, Thornflower. What do you think happens in the next episode?

Here's what I'd like to see -- Desperate Housewives in WoW form. Rederik should have come home to find his wife making out with the teenaged herbalist. He'll have more important things on his mind, though, as he's facing tax evasion charges for not paying gold for years. Meanwhile, the stares of the other women on the street do nothing to comfort them, but those women have secrets of their own ... The moral of the story is to describe your series better from the very beginning.

TotalBiscuit then reminded me that I had yet to feature one of his favorite machinimas, Wings for Hector. Dating back over two years, Wings certainly isn't the most current movie out there, but it was highly favored in its time.

Hector and Eulogie, the creators of Wings for Hector, mixed Rogue PvP with cut-scenes and a rockin' soundtrack to bring the audience heart-pumping action. Coming in at just under 12 minutes, this video isn't for the faint of heart, or those prone to seizures. The aspect ratio jumps around quite a bit, but so do the flashing images. Viewers be warned that there are mild subliminal elements, but hopefully that won't stop you from enjoying this trip down memory lane ...

It's a well known fact that I rarely feature gameplay and PvP videos on Moviewatch. However, as long as they're artistic, I don't have a problem with them. As a matter of fact, now that I'm playing WoW again (as Moowi on Mal'Ganis!), I actually enjoy seeing them. The thing is, the UI needs to be off, some shots need to be sweeping, and I look for an overall cinematic quality in general.

Paus, of Bathing with Ghosts fame, has created a beauty of a movie to show off the PvP skills of Ayanas, of Trollbane EU, in Waarom Fred zuigt in PvP. It makes me wonder what Shepiwot, of the How to Paladin series, would be capable of if he had a more complex editing program than Windows Movie Maker. As for actual display of skill, the poor guy keeps dying, but that's dwarfed by high definition (Boooooo, Vimeo!) spinning and jumping, plus an epic soundtrack!

Machinimators were given the choice between two unintentionally horrible scripts and were asked to follow them to the letter. In honor of that contest, Baron Soosdon, half of the winning duo, decided to create his own imba machinima contest. Offering up a top prize of being uuiU'd by Soosdon himself, he cranked out a script in just 15 minutes!

It's been a while since I wrote about Kilh, of Rock 'n' Troll fame. He noticed the contest with a little over three days left until the deadline. Of course, being the talented filmmaker that he is, he decided to give it a go -- with amazing results. When asked for comment, he stated that the script made no sense, so he just followed it as if it were step-by-step instructions.

Featuring a voiceover by yours truly, EPIXX - Too Fast For Love is ... something else. Try to imagine toilet gnomes, a ruined PR campaign (a nod to one of my Moviewatch posts), an epic purple Wand of Not Burning Books (the part that I voiced), a Titanic spoiler, and a bad 80s song in the credits that isn't a Rickroll. Those are just some of the highlights of an intentionally awesome script!

The boys at Dirt Dog Gaming, of Eradar, have flooded my inbox. It's an interesting strategy that worked, but just this once. I previously wrote about their Christmas and New Years songs with a WoW spin on them.

This time around, Mirabell and Barenger have parodied the infectious Katy Perry song, I Kissed a Girl. Their take, Tanked a Boss, isn't the best machinima by any means. The aspect ratio is way off and it sometimes jumps around. However, the song itself is worth it, and they get bonus points for the creative ways they give fellow guildmates shoutouts throughout the video!

The WeGame machinima contest closed days ago, but on Friday, September 4th 5th, we'll finally know the results of the contest. In the meantime, the highlighting of some of the best videos will continue! Interestingly enough, with Olibith receiving the help of machinimator Phil Rice, this is the first combination World of Warcraft and Mass Effect machinima that I've seen.

Le Terroriste is exactly what you'd expect from Olibith, which is to say that there's some off-color humor that some may not like. The year is 2139 and the crew of the Normandy spaceship is on a mission that will soon be struck by tragedy. If you're a gnome, well ... I'm sorry! You must use equal parts voice acting or visual expression of emotion, plot devices such as humor or fight scenes, engaging story lines, and proper editing and sound design, wrapped together in a neat little package. Too much of one single element can destroy an entire production. Today's featured movie makes a valiant effort at being complete.

Wish upon a Gnome, Episode 1, is the first of three episodes centering around a wee gnome that stumbles upon a Genie that grants him three wishes. His first wish finds him craving the power he feels is long overdue. However, as he soon discovers, not everything goes as planned. Given how disastrous his newfound fame and glory turns out, I can't wait to see what he asks for in the next two episodes!

Mushanga may just be the dark horse of the WeGame machinima contest. With only two unremarkable contest submissions prior to this entry, this is the first time he's involved voice actors, including Caruu and Jesse Cox, in his work. I found myself drawn into the story and rooting for the little guy, despite his flaws. If you get the chance, check out the higher quality versions of WuaG and give him some constructive feedback!

However, Firebolt Productions, the award winning creators of Acolyte 1.5 and Ugly Goblin's Christmas, went above and beyond that by getting a custom soundtrack by Nathan. The composer was so proud of his score that he sent in the link if you want to listen to it by itself!

The Way of Life is another top contender for the contest. The story revolves around a man, Thord, sent to Northrend at a young age at the same time as Arthas Menethil. Instead of emerging a hero, he is resigned to a life of misery at a post in Menethil Harbour. However, one day he'll meet a young man, Caldor, that will change his outlook on life.

Clearly in this contest to win, Firebolt pulled out all the stops with sound design by Caruu and a voiceover by Drewbie! He also used CrazyTalk, by Reallusion, for lip-synching. As a longtime fan of the program, it's about time that the World of Warcraft machinimators embraced it!

Ending with a total of 120 entries, word on the street is that there are at least six serious contenders for the top prize. Yesterday, I featured Martin Falch's split personality drama, Divided Soul. Today we're going to revisit the nastiest guy in Warsong Gulch.

It's been eight months since we were first introduced to B.Z. Caddington, the profiteer and PvP twink, in A Warsong Carol. Pinkhair has brought him back in silent movie-style as he tries to stop the alliance sneaking around his base.

This is a machinima that you'll have to pay special attention to. All of the dialogue is on text cards on the screen in order to give it that authentic feel. You can also expect custom models, little inside jokes here and there, excellent editing, and all-around evil. Now that's what I call a good time!

As of August 29th, they mentioned a whopping 78 entries have been submitted so far. However, since then, there have been a few very talented machinimators that came out of the woodwork to participate.

Martin Falch is one such machinimator, with his story of love and friendship, Divided Soul. When Kareth and Sarlek meet under unusual circumstances, a bond is formed for what seems like a lifetime, but will eventually crumble. Martin takes us on a journey through their lives, leading us to the outcome, which, according to him, will possibly leave you scratching your head. We don't want to give it away, but he suggests looking at the name of the movie for further guidance.

Cilo has channeled old school Jack Hunt with his cinematic portrayal of the full Sunwell clear. While I'm still quite the new player, I hope to one day be able to participate in epic encounters like this.

When I wrote about Cilo's Sunwell trailer the other day, I had no idea that he'd complete the full movie this quickly. You can expect more sweeping scenery and chaotic battles with a wide variety of enemies. He weaves in cut scenes to break up the raid footage a bit. Combined with a dramatic soundtrack, it's pure win.

Earlier today, I posted a huge roundup of links to get you started on your first machinima, or just polish your current work. The reason behind that post was to announce the incredible contest that Dell is having! They're offering up not one, but two systems as prizes, but I'm getting ahead of myself. WoW Insider is lucky enough to have two of their staffers, Dan O'Halloran and myself, as judges for this event.

How to enter:
  • Download the Dell XPS asset package from their site.
  • Create a World of Warcraft machinima under 3 minutes long that features their system.
  • Upload the video to YouTube and put it in this post on their forum.
  • The submission deadline is September 23rd, 2008 by 11:59pm EST.

It appeared in my inbox and was so well done that I had to check to make sure that none of it was borrowed from a cinematic. It's not every day that the first time you see someone's work, it's of this quality!

Cilo, of Secretfist on Zul'Jin, created this Sunwell trailer for his guild. While not as long as it could be, it covers a lot of ground. The sweeping scenery is breathtaking, while the gameplay footage is filmed in a way that makes it tolerable. If all gameplay videos were made this way, I'd blog them a lot more often!

Named after the main song, Riot, by Three Days Grace, it's all about the little guy. The troops, led by a wee gnome, take on their king, who had begun to cause problems for them.

What I find interesting about this machinima is that he used Adobe Premiere Elements, the lesser of the Premiere family, which retails for roughly 100 USD, and GIMP, a free image editing program. As evidenced, you don't always need a fancy editor to produce decent results. While he could use work on some of his handmade signs, he didn't do a bad job overall. Sefearion brings us his interpretation of strategic planning from both sides. While he admits that the portrayals are blown out of proportion, they end up entertaining nonetheless.

The model viewed characters need some work, but the voices and topic matter help make this an instant classic. The Alliance team members are portrayed as whiny and disorganized, while the Horde are prim and proper. He leaves us with a cliffhanger, so we won't know what side wins until later. Given his humorous bias towards the Horde, you can easily figure it out without seeing the battle, though.

In VoodooRay's eyes, WoW is the wave of the future -- literally. WoW 3K is a futuristic sci-fi look at the game we all know and love. The man that brought us Moonkins in every way imaginable has supplied us with stormtroopers, bunkers, and plenty of action this time around.

At the end, VoodooRay offers up tidbits about certain scenes. For example, he pushed his computer to the limit by modeling everything except the characters in Adobe After Effects. He actually had to remove some elements in order to function! In another scene, he even had to model it blindly and hope for the best. I think it turned out pretty well given the circumstances.

The lack of lore will continue until morale improves! This time, try to think of WoW as the real world and the model viewed characters as actors that star in lots of movies.

The Phantom of WoW is an interpretation of the famous Broadway classic, The Phantom of the Opera. The story centers around a soprano that lacks focus until she is mentored by a mysterious masked man, who terrorizes the Paris Opera House. For only his second machinima, Whistel did a pretty good job!

When I wrote about Silent Wind on Tuesday, I mentioned that WoW was lacking in the horror department. I had no idea that Legs was working on the most epic vampire flick I've seen! It's been a little over two months since her last machinima, Silversun, but she hasn't lost her touch at all.

Precious Blood is a story of heartache. Love is lost and lives are changed -- some for eternity. You can expect plenty of blood from this film, but it's not distasteful. Legs has a flare for cinematic shots and quality content. More gore, please!

He has such a gift for rewriting lore and putting a totally new spin on it. Argent Crusade: Salvation is no exception. Is it me or is he getting really good with his special effects?

His latest story centers around Tirion Fordring overhauling the Silver Hand. He uses a voiceover by Caruu, as Fordring, to act almost as a transmission. Tirion voices his doubts about winning the war as the battle is waged on screen.

If you enjoyed the critically acclaimed video game series, you'll like Silent Wind. She combined WoW scenery with scary elements, such as ghosts and children laughing, to replicate the eerie feeling you get when playing.

My only complaint is that the machinima is far too short to thoroughly enjoy. I wouldn't mind seeing a series born out of this video. WoW is seriously lacking in the horror department!

I dug into the reader submissions to bring you an unpolished video with a lot of potential. Adreena, an aspiring machinimator, decided that she wanted to humorously visualize recipes instead of just read about them. Now I have to warn you, this machinima is really rough around the edges, but I love the concept. That's why I'm going to offer up some tips for her to use in her second episode.

The most glaring mistake comes from improperly chroma keying the WoW Model Viewed character. The timing is off, so there is a noticeable difference between when Ethnea and the background appear. She also didn't adjust the high and low thresholds for her character, which is causing transparency issues. If you're just going to use still shots of your character in a picture of a background, you may as well put your character in the picture itself by using a photo editing program.

Wintergrasp - First Glimpse is a Wrath of the Lich King beta exploration video from build 8770. Devlin checks out some of the vehicles and takes them for a spin. Whether you're into the catapult-like features of the Demolisher, or the circular saw-wielding robotic features of the Shredder, one thing is for certain -- there's something for everyone. While not the most polished production, it's nice to see some of the newest toys in Wintergrasp!

Based on lore, they've chosen to break it down into two films which will be released in Fall 2008. The first part covers the shaping of Kalimdor, the Alliance of Lordaeron, the Second war, and the Arthas's putrefecation. The second part will touch upon Illidan's alliance with the Blood Elves, the deceit of Kael'thas, and the powers of an Eredar God.

We're not sure how long they've been working on this, but they haven't released anything since December 2007. That would probably explain why they're asking for voiceover, writing help, and general support. For more information on the film, check out their blog.
