Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas -- and just as we don't want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

This week we have two letter writers having personality conflict problems with fellow guildies.

Hello Drama Mamas,

Long time reader, first time writer. I'll keep this as short and sweet as I can. My problem arises from two things 1. a misunderstanding between two guildmates and 2,) limited activity.

A guild mate and I, in an out of game chatroom, have had some misunderstandings. While I attempt to not bring said things up in game, believing that OoGD (Out of Game Drama) remains OoGD, I am worried that this person should we have to work together, or talk to one another would shun me and be very nasty to me. A point I brought up to one of the Officers and explained that I wasn't sure if I was good a fit in the guild do to the "limited activity." The Officer told the GM, and that was when that whole mess got started. He put most, if not all, of the blame on me even though I had screen shots to prove otherwise. I have tried to smooth things over, even apologizing, and tried to explain to the GM what was going on-with the screenshots-only to be rebuked and told off, presumably (though I don't know for certain as they are good friends) with the other person also told off.

Continue reading Drama Mamas: Conflicting personalities

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Drama Mamas

Drama Mamas: Conflicting personalities originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 20 May 2013 13:00:00 EST.

Last time we talked about getting rid of funsuckers, but what about the many players who enhance our gametime? Should they be rewarded? How would you go about it?

Perhaps we could have a dropdown box where you could report a player for being extra helpful or otherwise going above and beyond to make your day better. Perhaps someone answered your question politely in tradechat. Or a player asked if you were going for the mining node you were fighting on top of rather than just ninjaing it during your battle. Or maybe someone helped you fight a battle out in the wild that got out of control with adds.

Once someone gathered enough reports of being helpful, what would the rewards be? I would think it would have to be something that doesn't affect gameplay. If it did, guilds may insist on guildies reporting each other has helpful just to skew the system in their favor. Perhaps it would just reward a series of titles. Unfortunately, guilds may still require guildies to report each other in order to get those titles just to collect.
Continue reading Community Blog Topic: Should well-behaved players be rewarded?

Community Blog Topic: Should well-behaved players be rewarded? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 17 May 2013 13:00:00 EST.

Last week we discussed how to get rid of the funsuckers making our WoW time less enjoyable. There was quite a bit of discussion in the comments and we had one blogger address the issue as well.

Account-wide ignore
I and others suggested one step in the right direction would be to make ignore account-wide. As long as the other characters on the ignored account were added to the ignore list invisibly, it couldn't be used for griefing.

Peer review
I had also mentioned the Tribunal system that League of Legends uses to police its player base. Commenter Yoojine linked to a video that described the science behind LoL's techniques. If you have the time to look at it, I highly recommend it for those who are interested in studying human behavior. It's fascinating and also heartening that a game company is going through so much effort to make the gameplay experience less toxic for everyone. Basically, they use peer review, direct feedback and the concept of priming to lower the toxicity of the in-game experience. I think that WoW could benefit from Blizzard conducting similar experiments on us.
Continue reading Community Blog Topic Results: How to get rid of funsuckers

Community Blog Topic Results: How to get rid of funsuckers originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 16 May 2013 12:00:00 EST.

This week on Drama Mamas, we discussed a couple that disagreed on how to handle GOGOGO PUGs, the sort that attempt to rush through everything as fast as possible. The tank felt that the DPS who pulled should not be healed, while the healer believed that everyone should be healed indiscriminately. In my opinion, the tank should pull and the healer should stay with the tank, healing others as needed as long as they are in range. But many in the comments disagreed.

Leveling dungeons are, for the most part, easy places to run -- over and over -- for experience and loot. The question is, are they only that or are they also places to practice your role for the endgame? Many commenters believe that endgame playing should be left for max level and that leveling dungeons should be raced through. Others believe that keeping to a standard pace is boring and chain pulling, even by DPS, is the only way to go.

In practice, a tank has little to no queue time, so the pace ends up being whatever the tank wants, else he or she will just accept the votekick and get into another group immediately. Though I don't believe in strongarm tactics, I do think the pace should be set by the tank, even if it ends up being a little slow. Learning on the way up is good. On the other hand, there is a challenge of the GOGOGO team that can be appealing.

What about you? Do you prefer GOGOGO dungeons while leveling? Why or why not?

Our last Community Blog Topic talked about the bad behavior of guildies to non-guildies and whether it was the result of being in guilds or not. Many people brought up suggestions as to how to police the individuals causing the problems. Unfortunately, some of these suggestions can be exploited to grief non-funsuckers. So the question is, how can we police the bad guys without making things even worse for the good or at least not-so-bad guys?

One suggestion that is constantly brought up is the expansion of the ignore feature. If you could /ignore someone's entire account rather than just the one character, that would prevent the funsucker from getting on another character to harass you. This would be best done anonymously so that only the one character appears on your ignore list, but the remaining characters on the funsucker's account would be silently ignored as well. (If using /ignore account-wide actually listed the ignored characters alts that were also ignored, that could be used by griefers to find people's alts just by temporarily ignoring them, so it would have to work anonymously.) I think that the ignore should work on all of the ignorer's characters as well so that logging on to an alt doesn't expose you to the player you've already ignored on your main.
Continue reading Community Blog Topic: How to get rid of funsuckers

Community Blog Topic: How to get rid of funsuckers originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 09 May 2013 09:00:00 EST. Last week, we tackled the topic of what World of Warcraft would be like without guilds. This was prompted by a comment by rayden54 suggesting that the community in general and PUGging in particular would be better without guilds, as they foster cliques as well as bad behavior toward non-guildmates.

My answer primarily dealt with the fact that guilds would happen regardless of whether Blizzard formally implemented guilds in the game, but that even without them, PUGs would be the same or worse since it's anonymity and lack of accountability that breeds bad behavior. Certainly there are guilds that have members who are rude outside of their guild, but all good guilds that I've belonged to have rules against giving the guild a bad name by being a funsucker. Guilds without those rules don't keep their non-funsuckers long.
Continue reading Community Blog Topic Results: WoW without guilds

Community Blog Topic Results: WoW without guilds originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 07 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. Last week, the It came from the Blog family of guilds held its annual Running of the Orphans. As the name suggests, we ran our orphans around, completing the Orgrimmar Children's Week quests.

After we picked up our orphans from the matron, we took the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Tirisfal Glades. We ran (no mounts, no ports, no summons) to have an audience with Lady Sylvanas in the Undercity. Then we ran back to the zeppelin, making the return trip to Org. Next, since some players did not have the flightpath to Thunder Bluff, we took the zeppelin there (AKA the Love Zeppelin) and ran out to Red Rocks to honor the fallen chieftain. We ran back to town and then took the flightpath right back to Orgrimmar.
Continue reading It came from the Blog: Running of the Orphans 2013 snapshots

Filed under: Events, It Came from the Blog

It came from the Blog: Running of the Orphans 2013 snapshots originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 07 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas -- and just as we don't want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

The duo in the letter disagrees and so does our Drama Mamas duo.

Hello Drama Mamas!

I recently moved in with my boyfriend, Sam, who I dated long distance for two years. I have never been happier! As you know, sometimes certain things that weren't a problem when long distance can become big ugly problems when living together.

When we were long distance, Sam and I made several WoW pairs together, so we could play and be together and have fun. Almost all of those pairs have me tanking (because I love leading and tanking and fast queues keep us entertained) and some of these pairs have him healing me as I tank.

All too often tanks are treated poorly. I understand that tanks may not seem necessary when leveling, but I wish more DPS would understand that many tanks find proper tanking fun, and so pulling ahead and ripping aggro can be an act of outright funsucking.

Continue reading Drama Mamas: The case of the disagreeing duo

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Drama Mamas

Drama Mamas: The case of the disagreeing duo originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 06 May 2013 09:00:00 EST. Today is the last day of Children's Week. After today, thousands of non-pvpers will stay out of battlegrounds for a year and most of us will have another pet or 3 in our stable. Since the pets are tradeable, my guess is that this holiday is getting more attention due to pet battles. Is that true?

My goal was to finally get the meta as School of Hard Knocks is the only thing standing between me and a Violet Proto-drake. As of this writing, I still haven't, but I have time. And so do you, if you're reading this early enough. According to the in-game calendar, the event ends at 11 a.m. PDT. Though I'm not sure how that works. Does the Matron just vanish?

Regardless, what about you?
In the comments of a recent Drama Mamas article about the etiquette of going AFK while grouping, rayden54 said:

... I think the best way to improve pugging (and the community in general) is to remove GUILDS.

All they really do is subdivide the community into a bunch of exclusive groups that only interact with outsiders when they have to and regard them as little more than nuisances.

Whoa. Having guilds is such a large part of playing an MMO to me, that I never even considered what it would be like not having them.

I think guilds are very important for making WoW a multiplayer experience, at least on the social level. Even if you play WoW as if it were a single-player RPG, you can still be chatting with fellow players as a group. That's all guilds used to be when I first started playing Everquest oh so many years ago, just a chat channel that you could only join if invited. And then there were games like Quake and Tribes where clans were formed outside of the game or you frequented particular servers that had the people that you liked to play with.
Continue reading Community Blog Topic: What if WoW didn't have guilds?

Community Blog Topic: What if WoW didn't have guilds? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 03 May 2013 13:00:00 EST.

Today's New York Times crossword includes a clue that any non MMO player wouldn't know. Amongst the standard pop-culture references and strict definitions, today's crossword puzzlers encountered the following clue, as shown by Jack Thompson (no, not that Jack Thompson) via Twitter.

@cm_zarhym @warcraft You guys made the Times crossword this morning. 4 letters, beginning with "R." twitter.com/Thejackthompso...

- Jack Thompson (@Thejackthompson) May 2, 2013

Raid is the obvious answer -- to us. But I would think it's a pretty hard answer for a non-gamer to come up with.

Does this mean that World of Warcraft is part of the mainstream? Are we going to be able to use MMO lingo around the water cooler now? Do we want to?

A couple weeks ago, we introduced the Community Blog Topic and asked for responses on personal blogs that we could then spotlight here. Unfortunately, no one left a blog link for us to spotlight. Fortunately, however, there were many blog-length comments that we can discuss.

The question was "What makes a perfect guild?" My response was that a guild had to have three qualities in order to be perfect: posted guild rules, strong leadership, and a consistent focus. Most of the commenters felt I had neglected one important requirement: people.

Sarabande_Mage said:

I think people make the guild. Leadership can only do so much - what they do IS important (after all, they can determine who comes into the guild, who might have to be asked to leave, what kinds of people to attract, etc), but an organization is only as good as its members.

Continue reading Community Blog Topic Results: The definition of a perfect guild

Community Blog Topic Results: The definition of a perfect guild originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 02 May 2013 18:00:00 EST.

It's Children's Week, so it must mean it's time for It came from the Blog's annual Running of the Orphans. As the event name says, we get orphans and we run around with them while completing our orphan quests.

When: Friday, May 3 at 10:30 p.m. EDT (7:30 p.m. PDT, 8:30 p.m. server time)

Where: Meet at the pond near the engineering trainer that's next to the orphanage in Orgrimmar on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H)

Who: Any Horde character level 10 or over

How: Ask any member of It came from the Blog for an invite to the guild if you are not already a member of our family of guilds.

You have to be at least level 10, because you can't get an orphan otherwise. We also will not be forming a raid since we need to complete quests. We will have an event chat set up as usual, however.

The pet you get for completing the quest is bind on account and tradeable, so don't let your not being Horde or Zangarmarsh not being your main server stop you from joining us.

Hope to see you there!

Tonight is the night we celebrate It came from the Blog's penchant for virtual boozing.

 When: Tonight, April 26 at 10:30 p.m. EDT (7:30 p.m. PDT, 8:30 p.m. server time)

Where: Meet at the inn in the Valley of Strength, Orgrimmar on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H)

Who: Any character level 10 or above

How: Just ask any It came from the Blog member if you are not already in our family of guilds

 What: Visiting bars throughout Azeroth

The two things we usually have in our events are drinking and death. You'll need some cash for buying digital drinks, but I'll buy you some, should you run short.

Mounts are not required as much of the travel will be by mage portals. You will need to be level 10 to join the raid group, however.

We will not be holding cross-realm events for the foreseeable future, so you need to be on Zangarmarsh and you need to be Horde. But keeping a character in our guild means you can always join in our monthly events.

We look forward to seeing you at Bar Crawl 2013!
It's time for this month's It came from the Blog event and we're going to be virtually drinking. Again. This time the excuse is so that we can hit some famous and not-so-famous bars around Azeroth.

We'll begin our journey with Barkeep Morag in Orgrimmar. Here are the details:

 When: Friday, April 26 at 10:30 p.m. EDT (7:30 p.m. PDT, 8:30 p.m. server time)

Where: Meet at the inn in the Valley of Strength, Orgrimmar on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H)

Who: Any character level 10 or above

How: Just ask any It came from the Blog member if you are not already in our family of guilds.

What: Virtual booze, travel, more virtual booze, probably no death -- this time

You should be at least level 10, so that you can join a raid group. You also should have some money for drinking, but I can provide libations for those who are short on cash.

So join us for Bar Crawl 2013! And if you normally play Alliance please create a Horde character and join us anyway. You'll be able to see some places that are new to you and have some fun as well.

Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas -- and just as we don't want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

Do you remember when WoW was shiny and new? Ah, memories.

	Dear Drama Mamas,

I am fairly new to gaming. I started playing about 4 months ago and have since become borderline obsessed with how much fun I am having. There are tons of things to do and I love discovering new things all the time. Currently I belong to my Boyfriend's guild. We play on a very low pop server and there are currently only 4 active members in the guild. He and His friends like it that way- and that's fine. They are all in charge and have been gaming forever. Mostly they focus on occasional PVP (and pet battles- don't tell him I told you!). I really enjoy playing with them and don't feel self conscious about my occasional noob-ness,However I feel that being a part of his guild/ playing on a low pop. server is a limiting experience for me as a newer gamer.

Continue reading Drama Mamas: Girlfriend gamer

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Drama Mamas

Drama Mamas: Girlfriend gamer originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 09:00:00 EST.

Lisa Poisso recently asked if player-made gear had become irrelevant. Many of the near 200 responses said yes. But The Godmother over at ALT:ernative disagrees. The 496 epic crafted gear market is alive and well on her server. She is making a healthy profit listing her creations on the Auction House.

A jewelcrafter, an alchemist and a scribe are my high level characters, so I can't make high end gear. But my pockets are overflowing from the profits I make selling green drops from questing. While I've been able to sell uncommon gear throughout leveling my pandaren monk, the armor that has dropped while in the 80s has been particularly lucrative. In general, the weapons aren't worth spending the inordinately expensive deposit to list, but most of my other green drops are selling after one or two listings. I can make some profits from my gems, potions and glyphs, but nothing compares to the uncommon gear market on my low pop server.

Now, I know people are reticent to give away their top money-making secrets. But there are enough servers with varying economies to make it relatively safe to reveal the items that make money for you. What works on your server may not work on another realm type or level of population. But I can still see where you may not want to risk it.

Yet I'm asking just the same. What is your big money maker on the Auction House? Does it vary according to what days of the week you list it? If you don't want to reveal your secret, at least tell us if you have a big money maker or if you're finding it hard to sell things you used to be able to sell.

Senjira recently asked on the European Interface and Macros forum:

Hey guys i was wondering if i could create a targeting arena1-2-3 macro where i can add several #showtooltips, where the tooltip alters depending on which character i am playing, for example it shows block when i am on mage and link when i am on shaman etc. etc.

I would like this as i like to keep a clean UI, and would like to avoid making 5x Tar 1-2-3 macros..
Thanks in advance!

Community manager Taepsilum responded with a solution involving using the items in bags:

	#showtooltip 0 1
/target Arena1

This will change the icon and tooltip of the macro to be whatever is in the first spot of the character's main backpack. The macro works, but I find it confusing if a consumable or something else you can use is in that bag slot, since not just the icon changes. The tooltip lies so I can't tell if it's my macro or a stack of stamina scrolls.
Continue reading How to customize a macro icon for each character

How to customize a macro icon for each character originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 20 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST.

Recently Frostheim AKA Brian Wood recommended peripherals for use with playing WoW over on Warcraft Hunters Union. He detailed which mouse, keyboard and headset he uses and why. He eschews anything wireless as a fraction of a delay can mean life or death in certain in-game situations.

Personally, I agree with him. Though I dislike the inconvenience of being wired to my computer, I also have a non-wireless mouse, keyboard, and headset -- all of mine Logitech. I'd like to upgrade to trying out Steelseries or Razer, but my pocketbook hasn't allowed for that. I can say that my peripherals have taken a beating over the years and are still working fine, if a bit disheveled.

I also concur with Frostheim's opinion that gaming keyboards should be lit, for ease in seeing the keys in low light. If you tend to use keyboards until they fall apart like I do, illuminated keyboards have the added benefit of not having the letters rub off. My daughter's hand-me-down keyboard is missing several letters, and she isn't a touch typist (yet). I guess it's time we upgraded her.

How about you? What are your gaming peripherals? Can you recommend them or are you just slumming it until you can afford something better?

Most of us have been in more than one guild. With guilds falling apart over drama or absent guildies or whatever, we haven't been able to stay with the same guild we were in when we first started playing. It can't all be blamed on the guild; sometimes our tastes change or we move on to greener pastures.

Once you've been in a really good guild, it's hard to let go even when things go sour. This is a topic that comes up in Drama Mamas so often, we've written a guide as to how and when to leave your guild. A bad guild can be detrimental to your enjoyment of WoW, just as a great guild enhances your gameplay experience.

But what defines the perfect guild? I think there are three factors:

Posted guild rules Whether they are in the in-game guild info or posted on a separate website, clear and easily accessible guidelines for guildie behavior are a must. So much drama can be avoided when everyone is clear about how to behave both in and out of guild.

Harassment is as harassment does.

	Dear Drama Mamas,

To put it simply, I am incredibly overwhelmed by a mix of issues with my guild both online and off. I have been with the same guild since about 2009(ish) and was one of the founding members. I assisted with raid leading, recruitment, and many other facets of keeping things running. Myself, our guild leader - who I will call J, and a fellow officer, W were all very close friends for several years.

Until I made a fatal mistake. During a guild event myself and W got... a little too close. I know it was a mistake and it has been having a negative impact on my life for several years now. Whenever I would date anyone else, W would become incredibly jealous and angry, to the point of threatening me, and making incredibly lewd remarks to me via e-mail or messenger services. J, on the other hand did not want to become involved (reasonably so, I think) and would not address the issue.

Continue reading Drama Mamas: Of flings and friendships

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Drama Mamas

Drama Mamas: Of flings and friendships originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 09:00:00 EST.

I took advantage of one of the many Blizzard sales to get The Spawn's account up to date through Cataclysm a few months ago. We made a pandaren duo together and played through the Wandering Isle, choosing Horde, my faction of choice. This is the first time playing together when she's been able to read the quests without my help, so she's a real partner instead of a tagalong. The experience has been illuminating.

The title of this article is kind of misleading, because some of these things I already knew, but "10 things playing with my daughter illuminated for me but I already knew, they just weren't at the forefront of my mind" is a bit unwieldy. Regardless, here they are:

Sprites are scary. Anne Stickney had pointed this out before, but I didn't really get it until playing with The Spawn. After being swarmed by them and dying, I had to play her character in order to get her through a particular questline. It's all OK now. No nightmares. It could have turned into another Raving Rabbids incident -- she still fears them in her sleep. That was a big video game fail on my part. (It's the screaming.)

It came from the Blog is having another scavenger hunt and you're all invited.

When: Tomorrow, March 30 at noon EDT (9 a.m. PDT, 10 a.m. server time)

Where: Meet at the fountain in the Court of the Sun in Silvermoon City on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H)

Who: Any Horde player, but you'll have a better chance of winning if you have a mount

How: Just ask Tizzi or any It came from the Blog member if you aren't already in our family of guilds

There will be 10 winners. The prize for each winner will be a choice of battle pets, some donated by guildies and some extras from my collection. All you have to do is complete the scavenger hunt and show the items in a trade window to me (Tizzi). The hunt will take place in a non-flying area, so only those with ground mounts will be at an advantage.

You will need 25g (which will be provided to those that are new to the server and poor) and 37 spaces in your bags. (The list is a bit longer than usual to make it more challenging.) The items will be listed in /say at the event time, so that punctual players have an advantage. I will then repeat the list 15 minutes later in event chat.

So come have some fun and maybe win a valuable battle pet. And remember, since battle pets are account-wide, you don't have to have your main on Zangarmarsh or even in the Horde in order to enjoy them.
All guild ranks can invite, so /whisper Tizzi or any online member. You are all welcome as long as you play by our simple rules -- basically, don't be a funsucker! Your recent article on Time Management has me considering if I need to change roles in the game.

I'm the main tank for my small 10 man guild. We raid two nights a week. We are currently working on Horridon one night, and going back to HoF/ToES the 2nd night to help some members get better gear. If I don't play, 9 other people don't get to have fun. I also feel a certain responsibility to my guild to have the best gear I can get which means putting in a ton of time into WoW on our non-Raid nights.

The thing is I love playing WoW. I love my guild. I love tanking. I have quite a few battle pets burning a hole in my pocket, so it's time for another scavenger hunt.

When: Saturday, March 30 at noon EDT (9 a.m. PDT, 10 a.m. server time)

Where: Meet the fountain in the Court of the Sun in Silvermoon City on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H)

 Who: Any horde player

How: Just ask Tizzi or any member of It came from the Blog for an invite

Some of the companions have been donated by guildies and others are extras I have from holidays. The great thing about battle pets is that everyone who joins us will still be able to use their prizes on their home servers.

The contest will be held in zones that don't allow flying, but you'll have a better chance of winning if you have a mount. That having been said, I have many pets to give away, so there will be many winners.

The hunt list will be provided in /say when the event begins, so that only those who are punctual will be able to see it. It will be given again 15 minutes later in event chat.

These hunts are always fun so please join us!
My GuildMaster, who was also in the zone says, "That's what she said. ;D" Now I would have no problem with this, if our guild rules did not say specifically, "Each [GUILD NAME] is held accountable for his or her actions. Everyone is subject to a "three-strike" rule, meaning that an infraction of the above guild rules, and/or doing foolish or thoughtless things that would cause [GUILD NAME] to be seen in a poor light to the general populace of the realm will win you a warning." and one of those above rules include..."Keep chat and Ventrilo chatter PG-rated.

Overnight, Blizzard rolled out a hotfix on all servers nerfing the obscenely high XP people were gaining from winning pet battles. You can no longer level characters to 89 in a matter of hours by hanging around capital cities battling level 1 pets.

Bashiok explains how and why they implemented the nerf.

We're in the process of updating the hotfixes blog with the recent changes to Pet Battle XP, but wanted to provide a bit more insight into why the changes were made and how XP is calculated.

All buffs to player XP (heirlooms, enlightenment, guild bonus etc.) were bugged, these where hotfixed to work as expected.

General player XP from pet battles was tuned too high, these numbers have been balanced accordingly.

Player experience is granted based on a number of factors. These are player level, number of pet opponents, maximum pet opponent level and the level disparity between opponents pets and your pets.

Our philosophy is that player XP from pet battles should be, in general, somewhat slower than normal questing.

While almost everyone agrees that it was not in the game's best interest to allow the ridiculously speedy leveling players were taking advantage of, the nerf at first seemed excessive. Whereas one could get 28K for winning a level 1 pet battle at level 60, this morning the same character got 900 to 2000. But as Bashiok describes above, the XP now scales appropriately according to level of the player and the pets in the battles.

I've been experimenting and I agree that they have succeeded in making pet battles slower than questing, but not a complete waste of time. If you are questing in a level appropriate area, taking time out to battle the wild pets in the same zone is definitely worth doing to add variety and experience to your endeavors.

Also, heirlooms, XP buffs, guild bonuses all still affect pet battle player XP, so do go take a ride on the Darkmoon Faire Carousel before you test the hotfix for yourself.

Did you take advantage of the insane leveling XP? I did only for a few levels. A grind's a grind, after all, and there are new islands to explore.

We're getting reports of insane experience gains for players via winning pet battles. Because the XP being awarded was affected by heirlooms and XP buffs -- like the Darkmoon Faire Carousel buff -- people were leveling characters from 1 to 89 in a matter of hours. (Experience for pet battles stops at level 89 and you get a chance for Lesser Charms of Good Fortune, instead.)

Community Manager Zarhym had this to say on the subject on Thursday afternoon:

.@lordreinhart @cm_zarhym Yes, pet battles are rewarding more XP than intended right now. We're testing a hotfix to address this asap. :) - World of Warcraft (@Warcraft) March 7, 2013

The XP scales with your level and how close your pets are to the pets you defeat. XP is earned via battling pets in the wild, pet tamer NPCs, and other players in pet battle PvP. No experience is gained from pet battle duels or if your highest pet is more than 5 levels above the pets you are fighting. The amount received before the nerf was roughly what a character gets from completing the capital city cooking and fishing dailies.

Because you can get XP from battling level 1 wild pets, people were camping out in major cities and decimating the battle pet population while leveling their low level pets.

As of this morning, it looks like all realms have been hotfixed so that the experience is approximately 10% of what it was. We have no further official word on the nerf as of this writing, but we'll keep you posted.

Update: It looks like from the comments and my experimentation that the nerf is scaled. While it is no longer worth it to hang around Stormwind and kill level 1 pets, if you battle in level appropriate zones with level appropriate characters, the XP gain is still worthwhile.

It is no longer a waste of leveling time to battle pets with lower level characters. With the advent of patch 5.2, players can now earn XP from pet battles. (If you're max level, you have a chance of getting Lesser Charms of Good Fortune instead.) All you have to do is participate in any pet battle -- other than dueling -- with your highest pet being no more than five levels above the pets you are fighting. This includes pet battle PvP, where you queue up from your pet journal, just not the pet battle duels you can do with friends ... or strangers, for that matter.

The experience is comparable to completing the capital city cooking and fishing quests. For example, my level 77 mage gets 27K XP from the Orgrimmar cooking dailies and gets 26K for fighting a battle with three level 1s vs. a level 2. The XP varies according to how much higher your highest pet that your battling with is above the pets you are fighting. A four level difference nets my mage about 21K XP. Whether you are battling other players, wild pets or tamers, the XP gained is consistent.

Is it worth it to try to level via pet battling? I would recommend questing, gathering, archaeology digging and battling pets in the same zone to maximize your leveling potential. But if you're in a gotta-catch-'em-all frenzy, as I sometimes am, you can battle pets with your leveling alts while still progressing more than just your pets.

I wouldn't be surprised if players tried to level while just pet battling. Will you be taking advantage of pet battle player XP?
Each week, Blog Azeroth hosts a Shared Topic for bloggers to answer on their own blogs and then link to in the forum. Last week, Noahdeer from Be MOP asked:

World of Warcraft has added many different items for players to collect, whether it be collecting pets, mounts, transmog gear or knickknacks about the lore. This week's topic asks what you do collect in the game and what is your prized item from that collection?

I don't really collect on purpose. I do collect battle pets, but I haven't tried to catch 'em all, yet. And I like my mount collection, but I haven't camped bosses for hard-to-get ones like real collectors do. However, I have accidentally gathered quite a few objects across my many characters: quest items.

I don't like throwing quest items away. What if I go back to do the quest even though I've out-leveled the area ages ago? I might want to go for the achievement some day. And, yeah, some of these items may be obsolete, but do I want to go look up each one to find out? Naw, I just let them get all moldy and mildewy in my bank.
Continue reading Blog Azeroth Shared Topic: World of Warcraft collections

Blog Azeroth Shared Topic: World of Warcraft collections originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 16:00:00 EST. Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas -- and just as we don't want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

We've dealt with relationship difficulties and online cheating before, but this week our letter writer has neither of those problems. The issue is that he has an admirer who seems to wish that weren't the case.

	Hi

I have a problem in my guild and don't really know how to resolve it without hurting someone's feelings.

Basically I'm a married man who's partner doesn't play WoW but I still love her regardless 😜. My guild is a friendly social guild but I mostly do pvp (not important but explains my bouts of free time) so when I'm not pvp'ing I tend to help other members of the guild either by helping run dungeons or guiding them around The place.

Continue reading Drama Mamas: Unrequited romance

Drama Mamas: Unrequited romance originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 25 Feb 2013 09:00:00 EST. This is a call to action! It came from the Blog is staging a peaceful protest tomorrow. We want booze sold in the Undercity, and we want it now! We'll be starting at the top, and then moving our protest from there.

Because love is in the air, our form of protest will be a Love-in. So it will not only be peaceful, it will be groovy.

When: Tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 16 at Noon EST (9 a.m. PST, 10 a.m. server time)

Where: Meet in front of Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H)

Who: Any Horde player level 10 or above

How: Ask Tizzi or any It came from the Blog member for an invite, if you aren't already in our family of guilds

If you are joining us (and all are welcome), please wear something alluring, bring something alcoholic and behave something groovy, man.

Alliance are encouraged to protest with us! Just roll a Horde character (10 or above) and show us how it's done. After all, your dwarves would never allow a dry city in your faction. Or wait, does the Exodar sell libations? They're so full of light and boringness there -- which is why it should be a disco.

Anyway, join us for peace, love and virtual drinking tomorrow!

Leveling up a monk is good fun and rather speedy. Starting from level 20, monks can complete daily quests that allow them to practice key skills and also reward an experience buff that stacks up to 48 hours. All they have to do is use their Zen Pilgrimage skill to send their spirits to the Peak of Serenity and interact with their Monk trainers. No other class has this kind of training, but the druids used to have something similar in Moonglade.

Once upon a time, leveling up a druid was much more difficult than it is now, and arguably more fun. Each form had a class quest to go with it and the Moonglade teleport spell was used to get these quests, as druids needed to speak to the druid trainers in the Cenarion Circle in order to advance as a shape-changer. Granted, the Aquatic Form quest was a royal pain, but it was a rite of passage that I thought made sense. There were no daily quests, nor was there repeated training as to how to use the forms, but the class quests did make advancing as a druid more rewarding.

I think they should revamp Moonglade to return it to its former glory and use the Peak of Serenity as a model for training druids how to use their forms and other key skills.
Continue reading Should Moonglade return to being the druid's Peak of Serenity?

Filed under: Druid, Analysis / Opinion, Monk

Should Moonglade return to being the druid's Peak of Serenity? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 20:00:00 EST. We at It came from the Blog want to hold a protest -- the best kind of protest there is: a Love-in. For those of you who aren't hip to the 60's lingo, a Love-in is just a particularly groovy Sit-in. The protesters hang out in a public place and protest peacefully, but the theme is love, since love is in the air, as you know.

What will we be protesting? You can't buy alcohol in the Undercity. Seriously, how is that even legal?

When: Saturday, Feb. 16 at Noon EST (9 a.m. PST, 10 a.m. server time)

Tizzi will be providing transportation as needed via mage port, which is why you need to be at least level 10 so that you can join the raid.

Anyone is welcome to join us and support the cause. If you're Alliance, please make a character just to help out. We appreciate all the support we can get.

So join us for our very first Love-in. Just make sure to wear something alluring, and bring booze.
Drama Mamas Lisa Poisso and Robin Torres are experienced gamers and real-life mamas -- and just as we don't want our precious babies to be the ones kicking and wailing on the floor of the checkout lane next to the candy, neither do we want you to become known as That Guy on your realm.

We had three letters ready to go this week, but one of the letter writers has since requested not to be featured here, so we're respecting the request. This often happens, when someone writes a letter to us and then soon after asks that we not answer it. Sometimes it's because the situation resolved itself, and sometimes it's more due to not wanting to be identified.

We recommend letting your letter sit overnight before sending it -- and that goes for any emotionally charged email under any circumstances. What you want to get out in the heat of the moment is often not the same as what you really want to say the next day.

Regardless, here are more results. First, we have a happy ending for the situation where the GM wouldn't give up control of his guild.

Hi, im the concerned guild officer from the 'GM who wont give up control' article from june last year, i thought i would post a update on what happened.

So i linked your article to the officers and we had a talk with the GM explaining what he was doing and that the other 200 actual people in the guild didn't need it and he basically cut it out and went almost silent. He didn't give up the GM control, but he basically took care of the guild bank and recruiting whilst i took charge of organising raiding and another officer took charge of guild events and all in all things greatly improved. We got the good atmosphere back and he was happily away counting his inks and glyphs horde and didn't bother anyone or cause those awkward vent silences anymore.

Continue reading Drama Mamas: More results from the letter writers

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Drama Mamas

Drama Mamas: More results from the letter writers originally appeared on WoW Insider on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST.

I've been playing WoW which means that I've definitely been playing since The Darkmoon Faire Island made its debut in 2011. Yet my first trip to the isle was this month. I'm not sure why I didn't go before. I knew there were fun repeatable quests to do, and I knew there were nifty pets to be had. So why didn't I go?

I think part of the reason was that I didn't realize that the profession quests gave experience as well as skill ups. I also thought that they still required you to pick up drops from all over Azeroth. But instead of picking up tails, pelts and feathers, there is just one quest that has you pick up Grisly Trophies of everything you defeat, which doesn't even require looting.

I also was under the impression that it was a pain to get to. Wrong. Not only are the portals to the Faire outside of easy to get to places, you can buy a trip to the current portal from the Darkmoon Faire representative hanging out in major cities.

By the way, if you are going to the Faire for the first time since the revamp, do bring 5 sacks of flour if you're a cook and 5 sheets of parchment if you're a scribe. That will save you from having to exit and find a trade supplies vendor in order to complete those two profession quests.

I've been missing out and I feel pretty silly about it since I'm usually into the event-related content. What about you?
At the end of last month, the It came from the Blog family of guilds celebrated the Lunar Festival with Lunar Lunacy 2013. We delivered on the promise of playing with things that go boom, achievements, and risking our lives.

First we gathered in the throne room of the Ruins of Lordaeron. (We made no sacrifices to The Elevator Boss on that day.) While we waited for everyone to arrive, we completed the initial Lunar Festival quest to get our invitations, and some attendees achieved both Frenzied Firecracker and The Rocket's Red Glare.

Then we were off to Moonglade, via our invitations, to beat up Omen, with many lowbies dying. Regardless, Elune's Blessing was ours. We then headed back to the festivities and made our invitations take us to Thunder Bluff to honor the elder there. Afterwards, we flew to Orgrimmar and completed the Elders of the Horde.
Continue reading It came from the Blog: Lunar Lunacy snapshots

Filed under: Events, It Came from the Blog

It came from the Blog: Lunar Lunacy snapshots originally appeared on WoW Insider on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 17:00:00 EST. Recently we talked about how to choose a style of guild in Drama Mamas. We covered styles from guilds based on class or race to fan guilds. But while an all rogue guild is a cinch to put into a category, most guilds fall under several different categories at the same time.

It came from the Blog, for example, is the WoW Insider guild on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H). We have monthly events as well as weekly dungeon runs. It's also a casual leveling guild for in between blog-sponsored activities for readers to hang out together. So we're a fan guild plus an event guild plus a helpful leveling guild.

I belong to another guild on a different server that is a 25-man raiding guild with a severe case of altititis on the side. Non-raiding players are fine as long as they're good guildies. Many raiding guilds, however, want only players who are available to raid or are getting their characters raid-ready ASAP.

Casual, hardcore, roleplaying, PvP, social niche, themed, mature as in adult themes and language or mature as in adults who keep it clean, kids allowed, kids encouraged, no kids ever -- there are so many different ways to describe a guild. How would you categorize yours?

Each week, Blog Azeroth hosts a Shared Topic for bloggers to answer on their own blogs and then link to in the forum. Last week, Effraeti from Awaiting the Muse asked:

We all have our favorite classes, and sometimes, even with our favorites we wish they had just a little something more. Like another skill that would be super cool and perfect to our class. Like for my Shaman, I think I should have more elementals.

If you could have another skill or two for your class, what would it be?

My answer? More druid ports.

Way, way, way back in the day, when druids first got the teleport to Moonglade spell, we were told it was the first of our ports. That text went away after a while, along with any hint of any other ports ever hitting the druid spellbooks.

When I used to play Everquest, there were two classes that had ports: wizards and druids. They were in constant demand for porting people to their respective portal sites. It's obvious that the original plan was to borrow the same idea, at least for self-portals. Maybe Blizzard didn't want to seem too copy-catish? I don't know. But I was bummed that my druid never saw another teleport spell.
Continue reading Blog Azeroth Shared Topic: What other skills should your class have?

Blog Azeroth Shared Topic: What other skills should your class have? originally appeared on WoW Insider on Thu, 31 Jan 2013 19:00:00 EST.
