Sunday Morning Funnies: For all to see

Teh Gladiators
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

It is March, and every March, I can't help being reminded of the "lamb or lion" exercise we always had to complete in early elementary school years. Like, journal entries and drawings and posters on the wall and everything, because this is super important stuff. March 2014, at least where I am, came in like a lion (the perfect excuse to stay in and read comics, I think).

As for this week's comic list, we have a couple of new additions, thanks to zuulzilla (of Surviving Azeroth). Firstly, because one of them is a new project (to be updated in addition to Surviving Azeroth, not instead of), called Shields and Sheep. Secondly, for pointing us to a friend's project, Chat Channeling. I know I only almost always say it, but tips are always welcome!

The real reason I hate the Timeless Isle

I hate the Timeless Isle.

I hate the lack of clear objectives. I hate the pseudo-platformer elements. I hate the pouncing tigers, stomping rock monsters, and the shield bearing Ordon yaungol (all of which have abilities I'd be perfectly happy to deal with in a dungeon but am inconvenienced by when I just want 50 Lesser Charms of Good Fortune for the week). There's also the unconventional grummle mailbox that requires two clicks instead of one, and the apocalyptic typhoon of random consumable items wrecking my bag space. But above all of those there is one thing I hate more than anything about the Timeless Isle ... The yaks.

Sunday Morning Funnies: I have bandages

World of Warcraft, eh?
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Alternatively titled, "Your graveyard or mine?"

On this week's edition of Sunday Morning Funnies, both Experience Boost and Surviving Azeroth are back with new updates!

Contested Territory is still on hiatus, but in the meantime, Herding Cats (the first-ever comic drawn by Maiu) is being posted, and there are new pages up this week.

Massive Pwnage posted another WoW-related comic, so check it out!

The list this week is nice and full and has some very fun stuff happening, as well as some heavier, more serious stuff. Here's a quick taste of what you'll find:
  • An existential crisis
  • Setting a loved one free
  • Dancing cats
  • A lot of breakage...
  • A valentine
  • A pile of trash and assorted unlucky people
And this week will also probably mark the last of the Valentine's Day (or Love Is in the Air) comics. Trig pointed out in last week's comments section that although he didn't celebrate the holiday for many years, he's coming to appreciate its potential for the acquiring of free chocolate. That's the holiday spirit, and pretty much sums up my childhood experiences with it, too. So, Trig probably spent the day munching (and making comics, because he's unstoppable). I did a belated dinner out, though it totally involved chocolate cake. How did everyone else spend last weekend?

What to do in a raid while waiting to raid

My guild is moving right along through heroic 25-player content -- we're 10/14 currently, and happily working on Thok. Part of the reason I enjoy the guild is the progression, but the other part is that no matter how bad things get, nobody ever takes things too seriously. To us, raid nights contain endless games within games to be played while groups are being set up and in between wipes. If there is something weird to be done in the Siege of Orgrimmar, something that has nothing to do with the actual killing of bosses at all, we've either done it, or we'll discover it soon.

But before you get started raiding, why not get some fishing time in? The other day we discovered that the small pool of water right in front of the instance portal is just deep enough to allow fishing -- something we thought removed with the destruction of the Vale. To our knowledge, you aren't going to find any fishing pools in the little puddle of water, but you can still fish. Not only can you fish, but there are Jewel Danio still lurking in the water.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Pickle nose

From Draenor With Love
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Since last week included Valentine's Day, there are some holiday-themed comics on the list this week. This includes special tidings from Gratz in place of regular updates, which will resume next week.

There is also a guest strip on Experience Boost due to the family emergency situation noted last week. By next week, regular updates are supposed to resume with this comic as well.

If you missed us last week, Contested Territory is on another hiatus while the next chapter is being prepared. In the meantime, her first ever comic, "Herding Cats", is being posted. With cats!

Our other absence is Surviving Azeroth, which is out this week, but will return in time for the February 23rd edition of SMF.

But, the list still has some pretty fun stuff going on. Here's a taste:
  • Decapitation!
  • A tutorial
  • A passion for dance
  • A spray bottle with water and vinegar
Finally, although Massive Pwnage is rarely WoW-related (and thus rarely featured here), it was featured last week. Just in time for the creator's new baby girl, Luna, to arrive in the world, so I couldn't resist sending a congratulations, and a welcome. (Luna is apparently a Level One Human, though I am not sure how fun they are to party with. I suspect they need to pretty much be carried, no?)

TradeChat takes on the history of WoW

Taking on the entire history of a game like World of Warcraft, from its announcement back in 2001 all the way up to today is a huge task, but TradeChat is up to it. She has created an epic 16 minute video taking on all the famous landmarks on the way, starting with that Leeroy Jenkins incident, the MOAR DOTS video, WoW's appearance on South Park, and the Corrupted Blood incident that's been used as a model for disease spread in countless studies. There's even an appearance in a question on Jeopardy! featuring Jenkins himself!

Panser has done an amazing job here, hitting the pop culture references, the first parodies, the subscription rise and fall, the releases and trailers of all the expansions and major patches. Adverts, both by other companies such as Moutain Dew and Toyota and those for World of Warcraft itself. She has Mila Kunis' famous interview with Jimmy Kimmel, talking about raiding, and countless other tidbits you might not have known before! What I love is how she's taken the announcement videos from all the expansions, and actually shows us all the things she's talking about instead of just marking time.

Sunday Morning Funnies: Marshmallow skulls

From Draenor With Love
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

First of all, I need to send congratulations to Volucris of Fox Rain (Kuo Comics), who got married! (And congratulations, too, on no more wedding stress!)

In other news, Chapter 5 of Contested Territory concludes this week! Chapter 6 is scheduled to start up on March 10th, and should hit the list on March 16th. And as Maiu is now on hiatus, she is treating us to some bonus content, including pages from her first-ever comic, Herding Cats (spoiler: there are cats!).

Experience Boost may be on a temporary pause. Due to a family emergency, regular updates are scheduled to resume February 17th, although we may (or may not) get some bonus content in the meantime. We hope things go well for you, Russell!

Guilded Age is starting Chapter 29 this week. And we missed WoW, eh? last week because of more hard drive issues (ugh!), which have been resolved, and the comic is back! Rejoice!

Finally, we have a new one-off comic to check out this week from Massive Pwnage.

Sunday Morning Funnies: A single player game

Contested Territory
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

Happy February, comic lovers. To kick off a short month, we have a shorter list than usual, with several comics skipping the week, or missing the cutoff date.

To make up for it, I'm including a bonus comic: Pinned! from NPC. You can imagine that Lisa is playing WoW, there. It's also the next comic posted since last week, so if you like to keep up whether it's WoW-related or not, click through and read on.

But, there is still quite a bit happening on our list, including romance, fights, reminiscing, sneaker, and more.

Curious? Here's a tiny preview:
  • A question and answer
  • Several comics with storylines involving parents (love, abandonment, the usual!)
  • A plot diagram
  • Snowshoe rabbits
Get reading!

Sunday Morning Funnies: Genius at work

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

This week, WoW, eh? is back. Plus, there are some bonus drawings posted to Facebook: Also on the list this week is NPC with two WoW-related offerings. Plus, one of them is also about Downton Abbey, which fans will appreciate. (And, if you've never given it a go, you should consider it. Bink is!) The other is (sort of) about Sherlock, which I'm certain you can't pass up.

From Draenor With Love has done up a bonus comic, as well, showing some character color keys.

Last week, reader Rosend asked how to go about getting a comic added to this lineup. Any web comic can be submitted to us either by dropping a link into the comments section, or by contacting the team and putting "SMF" in the subject line. We are always taking suggestions and submissions.

Blizzard employee Rene Koiter chats about Khal Drogo cosplay

Blizzard's annual Halloween costume contest is well-known among those who follow the company, and in 2013 it got even more attention thanks to artist Rene Koiter's incredible Khal Drogo cosplay, which went viral back in the fall. The website Geekpron recently sat down with Mr. Koiter for a five-question interview, going in-depth about why he chose the character for his outfit and how he made his vision a reality.

One aspect I hadn't fully appreciated prior to this interview was how many people it took to realize Mr. Koiter's vision of a Khal Drogo cosplay. It took no fewer than five other people to help him achieve the look--one costumer, two hair and makeup artists, a coworker who sculpted the medallion belt, and one who played the translator in the contest. It was clearly an enormous effort that payed wonderful dividends. Head on over to Geekpron for the full interview, and once again we tip our hat to Rene Koiter for his amazing performance!

The Lord of the Rings cast as Hearthstone cards

Hearthstone cards
If you're in the US you may very well be currently enjoying the Hearthstone open beta. If you're not, though, you've got to find some way to kill the time until open beta to hit your shores, and what better way to do it than with these Lord of the Rings-themed Hearthstone cards? Imgur user splatypus took the time to create a custom deck of Hearthstone cards based on the characters and iconic moments of the Lord of the Rings movies. While not particularly balanced in some respects, it's at the very least highly entertaining. My favorite card is at the very end, proving that people really do save the best for last.

I'm glad this deck doesn't actually exist, because it would be frustrating to both play with and play against. But I'd probably do it at least once, if I could, just for the novelty factor. Thanks to splatypus for this fun, tongue-in-cheek bit of creativity. Commenters of WoW Insider: if you could create a themed Hearthstone deck of your own, what would it be about? What would be its flagship cards?

Sunday Morning Funnies: Why do we even have this month?

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

In comic news this week, there is still no WoW, eh? to be had! Hopefully your technical issues are resolved soon, Kelly!

Also, last week's comments section was definitely worth a read if you missed out on it. One reader has been inspired to consider starting a comic, which is definitely cool. Not only are we always looking for more comics, but it's exciting to be able to feature someone new, and add to our list, which is full of comics that use various techniques and are created by people with various skills and skill levels. So, doooo it, I say!

Any of our regular readers will remember that Trig deals with daily pain. Last week, Trig left this comment:

"I've finally have a possible diagnosis and am undergoing a treatment plan involving a TENS unit. Who knew that electrical shocks would help so much? Feel lots better."

Congratulations, Trig! It's about time, and we all hope that you continue to feel better and improve!

Sunday Morning Funnies: The necklace

Experience Boost
Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics.

This week, we have the last of the New Year's themed comics (I assume), as well as some other new things - new beginnings, new places, new costumes, to name a few.

In comic news this week, WoW, eh? was having technical difficulties (or a computer uprising, it has been suggested) this past week, and so there's no comic up. There is, however, a sketch up (linked on the list) that's worth checking out, for Cadi's facial expression alone. Hopefully things are going better for you now, Kelly!

As mentioned last week, Gratz Adventure is starting up, and there are tons of updates to kick it off!

And because Trig asked, last week's SMF title referred to Kissless of WoW, eh? For fun, this week's title actually refers to two comics.

The best of WoW Insider: December 2013

And now we come to a close with the final entry in our Best of WoW Insider series. This was a slower month for editorial work in comparison to October and November, but a busier one for features and the arts scene. Thanks for hanging with us while we wrapped up the year, and we hope you'll stick around for whatever 2014 decides to bring.

Happy New Year, everyone! Stay safe out there tonight and we'll see you back in Azeroth.
